Salt and Pepper, many times, are added to items during the cooking process, but sometimes it’s not enough and food can then be pretty bland. When that happens we may need to add a little more. It’s not great for you to add to much salt, but sometimes you just gotta do it. What I’m wondering today is how convenient do you make adding salt and pepper to food once it’s on the table. Yesterday my DH added some salt to something I made, which is what inspired this poll. So, give me your salty answer today……

Do you put/keep salt and pepper shakers on the table?
If yes……. How often?
If yes……. How often do you use them?
(multiple choice)

For Me…… I do not keep salt and pepper shakers on the table? If one of us wants to use them, we have to get up and go get it out of the cabinet - I don’t want them to be convenient for us. The only time I put salt and pepper shakers on the table is for our dining room table for holidays, but I don’t count that.

Never I don’t own any I have never displayed any I do have a salt well I guess that’s what you call it and I have a pepper container from the store they’re in the cabinet with all the other spices I rarely add them to recipes because you don’t need that much salt there’s enough salt and everything that you’re cooking with if you want additional salt or pepper go to the spice cabinet and get some but I do not put them on my table and I never have
No we eat group lunch at work and my boss has them displayed on his table and everybody grabs them before they even touch their food and they are salting their food and adding pepper and they haven’t even tasted their food yet it’s just amazes me how many people will just add copious amounts of salt to their food when they haven’t even tasted it yet to each their own but it’s like you should at least try your food before you add salt to it just my opinion But these are young people they can probably afford to eat that much salt 🧂 That changes when you get older And the doctor tells you you can’t have any salt
I rarely ever put salt on anything ymmv

Never pepper, but I use salt sometimes. Less so now that most of our food has a sauce of some form.

I do put them on the table, but I don't often use them myself for eating. I also chose other because I sprinkle some salt on top of the coffee in the drip basket before I start up the coffeemaker. Takes away the bitterness.

I keep salt and pepper on the table. I also have a set in my caddy for when we dine on the patio. Both are used regularly, but the pepper is used more than the salt.

I use when cooking, so the "active" ones are by the stove.
I have decorative ones that are empty that sit on the kitchen island and/or dining room table when the holiday decorations are out.

I use salt very little, but use pepper a fair amount.

I don’t have traditional salt and pepper shakers to put out. For table salt I buy one of the sea salt grinders at the grocery, and a similar grinder for pepper. They stay on the table and depending on what we are eating, there may be other herbs and spices available as well. I tend to cook low salt and allow people to season to taste. It’s a carryover from cooking for my mom who was on a low salt diet.

My grandmother had a huge salt and pepper shaker collection.

I don’t have salt and pepper shakers. I only use them when making a meal, never add after the fact…

It’s kind of a trick question for us because almost all our casual family meals are plated in the kitchen and everyone fixes their own as they go. If I’m serving more formally at the table there is always a set put out. Not shakers; I’ve got small mills with peppercorns and pink sea salt. I don’t leave them (or anything else) there. When I clear the table everything goes back into the kitchen.

Salt and pepper shakers are kept on my table. My husband uses both. I never use them.

Same here.

I get the small disposable McCormick(?) salt & pepper grinders but don't have proper salt & pepper shakers. I want some, but the perfect pair elude me! Every time I see some I like it seems to me the salt shaker dispensing holes are to large and I feel like if we use it we will be dumping a ton of salt, still I keep my eyes open and one of these days I'll find a set I like.

The only real "shakers" we have are just holiday themed ones. Otherwise, most days we just put the grinders on the table for meals.

I keep them sitting on the counter, but I do not keep them at the table. I use them a lot (especially pepper, I drown stuff in pepper), but I put it on my food before I sit down.... we seem to rarely use the table.

So grinders not shakers - and 100% of the time for pepper - salt it depends on the food itself.
Many things already have enough salt so I don't put it out most of the time.

BTW: The FDA allows an average of 475 or more insect fragments per 50 grams of ground pepper so better to use a grinder IMO.
That said - almost all pre-ground spices have an allowable amount so...

Shakers and grinders left in kitchen cabinet. For dining room meals with company, on the table. I pretty much only salt and pepper egg stuff.

Salt & pepper always on the (kitchen) table We err on the conservative side when cooking, so it's not unusual for the completed dish to need a last bit of seasoning. We have several sets of Disney trash can shakers:earsboy:

I keep a set of salt and pepper shakers on the table at all times. But I rarely use the saltshaker and never use the pepper shaker.

I keep my Nana’s pheasant s&p shakers on the holiday table just as she always did. Only difference is her’s were filled and used while they function only as occasional decorations on my table.

I almost never add salt or pepper to a dish once complete. I might use them while preparing something, but once it's ready, there is no need to add any - not that I even cook all that much. I've been using the same salt and pepper without refilling for years.
