Short and sweet - 4 nights on the Wonder - November 8, 2018 - Galveston

Following along! It’s always fun to read your reports (though my multi-quote is being finicky)!

It would be super cool to see the Wonder pull in to port!

I’m bummed I won’t get to see Susannah now on my Feb cruise on the Wonder! But good job on getting promoted!

I forgot to mention that the clocks went forward last night, so we woke up somewhat late for us at about 8 am. I took this quick photo from the window and the weather looked like it was going to be a nice day. :sunny:

45028903765_b4e91075cc_c.jpg

We debated going up to Cabanas for a bite to eat, but we also had Palo brunch booked so we decided to order from room service and be lazy (imagine that!)

32069964688_f5fd7f8385_c.jpg

Breakfast was delivered in about 30 minutes. The lady that delivered breakfast was from Jamaica and really nice and friendly so we chatted with her for a while about life at sea. :hyper2: It was our second encounter with crew who really seemed to enjoy their job with DCL. We sat and enjoyed our coffee and pastries with some fresh fruit while gazing out at the rolling sea.

45028903205_35d5dbd7b6_c.jpg

I was on a mission to get to the gift shop as I had promised someone that is on our FB group for our next cruise that I would get her a magnet. :goodvibes I didn’t join the FB group for this cruise, although I usually do. I convinced Scott to make a run to the gift shop with me and so we popped up there just before 10 am. It was busy, I think the 4 night cruises are just busier in general, but we got the ornament and I found some ornaments I couldn’t live without. I also got a couple of Christmas presents for our friend’s children.

45941158961_50be4bd172_c.jpg

We got back to the cabin in time to get a quick shower and get ready for Palo brunch at 11:00 am. Our friend, Susana, is no longer on the Wonder. :sad1: She transferred to the Fantasy after her last contract ended on the Wonder and, as of this trip report, is now the hostess for Palo and Remy. :flower1: Super happy for her for a new opportunity, super sad for us to not see her on this trip. We didn’t request a server this time around. Judy was on vacation and Alex has left DCL (both of those were servers we have met through Susana), but we got seated with Duan, who is one of the “old-timers” left in Palo these days, so it was nice to see a familiar face. OK, here’s the plate. Scott prides himself on taking the photo really quick before they whisk it away.

45028901855_5437a4a166_c.jpg

The menu hadn’t changed that I could tell.

45891765602_b78eccb57f_c.jpg

There were some new items on the buffet, one was a spicy shrimp (12 o’clock position on this plate) and the other was the Arancini with mozzarella in the middle, both of these were served out of warming dishes. The shrimp were really good, the Arancini with the tomato in the middle that they had before was better than with cheese (IMO). My plate first, and then Scott’s.

45028908205_0840272759_c.jpg

45891766042_0557aa2ff9_c.jpg

Then I realized I didn’t have any crackers or bread for my cheese :scared:, so a whole new cheese plate was procured and it was all delicious.

45028908745_1656b6dae0_c.jpg

From the menu Scott chose the sirloin steak and I had the red snapper. Both were very good.

Here’s a picture of Duan dishing out pixie dust. pixiedust:

45028909455_8f094c7520_c.jpg

And then it was time for dessert. :yay: Scott and I tend to like very similar things, so our plates looked pretty much identical.

The lemon meringue has been changed up a bit and now has a square of sponge in the bottom, exhibited here by yours truly for purposes of a thorough trip report.

32069970828_3696ba6c79_c.jpg

A beautiful day to be bobbing along on the waves.

45028910075_7ef7a26ce3_c.jpg

We managed to be less piggy-like and have less spills this trip too! Susana would have been proud of us. :teeth:

45891767442_9c301feb32_c.jpg

On the way out I realized that we hadn’t taken any photos of ourselves so I asked the manager if he would mind doing the honors. He didn’t look like he was busyl. :D

45028910565_6a693494da_c.jpg

I will add this in (because you know what a nosey/gossip I am.) :rotfl2: There was a lady at brunch in a bathing suit cover up, the one you can buy in the gift shop that has the stripes on it. She had it over a pair of leggings, but it was very obvious what it was because you can buy it in the gift shop!! :lmao: I just always feel bad for the
crew that have to police that kind of stuff. Evidently she got away with it though. ::yes:: It was about as casual as I have ever seen in Palo though.

On the way back to the cabin on deck 2 the fish extender fairies had been busy at work. The FE’s were all full to bursting!! Fun!

45891767762_eefa1ed23a_c.jpg

We couldn’t decide what to do but we knew we needed to get out of the cabin or we would be asleep before we knew it. :faint: We ended up putting on bathing suits (and a cover up :rotfl:) and heading up to Deck 10. Loved the location of our cabin right by midship. The only downside is that we don’t take the stairs as much because it seems such a long way up!

45028911075_9091ac98da_c.jpg

The pool was busy but we managed to snag a couple of lounge chairs up under the shade on deck 10. We had to move the furniture around a bit to get two together but we’ve got less shy about doing that kind of thing over the years as people tend to leave a gap between themselves and the next person, effectively leaving single chairs for the taking that nobody wants. So we move them! Ha ha. I know, I know, rebels through and through.

45891768272_aa0259174d_c.jpg

45028911785_b660248822_c.jpg

And we had bought our friend Moet along for the ride. It was just screaming at me from the mini fridge to be drunk.

45891768862_943ff6e4d6_c.jpg

Ahhhh…..bliss….:cloud9:

45028912445_eaf34af0a4_c.jpg

45891769562_e786b4592c_c.jpg

We stuck it out until about 3 pm and by then the sun had moved around enough that it was starting to get warm enough to be uncomfortable. It was seriously nap-thirty by now anyway so time to get back to the cabin.

45028913205_fb69471e20_c.jpg

The seas were really calm today. I took this from our port hole about an hour later, just beautiful. We also saw some flying fish but I was never able to get a good enough picture.

45891770092_b4b16dc844_c.jpg

We watched some movies and just chilled out in general and decided to go up to deck 4 to watch the sunset at about 5:30 pm. There were a few lone runners/walkers but apart from that it was quiet.

45028913815_25db8bf524_c.jpg

So. Funny story. :listen: This lady came out to take photographs of the sunset right where there were two crew members washing down the plexi-glass. They stopped while she took the photo so that they wouldn’t get in her way. She didn’t seem to realize that they had stopped just for her, and so she stood there for ages happily snapping away. And then they figured out she wasn’t going anywhere and so they put down their tools and stood and watched the sunset too. :rotfl: Which begs the question….if you are at sea all the time, do you take those beautiful sunsets for granted do you think?

32069974378_d9050cd9e0_c.jpg

Meanwhile, back with my nose on my face as opposed to being in that ladies business  Here’s a picture of my photographer happily snapping away.

45028914165_7b441630d6_c.jpg

And here are the photos he took. It was a pretty sunset and I love deck 4 to watch it from. ::yes::

45028902645_3928886b43_c.jpg

We waited until the sun was completely down and then headed back to get changed for dinner and trivia (not that way around). Tonight was 80’s music trivia one of Scott’s favorites.

45891772542_dd8714d61e_c.jpg

We missed about 3 answers and couldn’t believe it when we won!! :earseek: Usually you have to be 100% right or you are toast.
Winning smile. We won the hats as our prize.

32069976978_1fe5af55e1_c.jpg

And both of us with the hats, and Scott still not letting go of his answer sheet! :lmao:

32069977188_1125eaf366_c.jpg

Wow! So, with that surprise behind us we made a quick trip to our cabin to drop off the prize stash and headed for dinner in Animator’s Palate.

32069977608_4b2a0437c5_c.jpg

Drinks for the winners. Had we not won, these would have been drinks for the losers.

32069977978_27a1e2894a_c.jpg

45028907695_b8dd5a56da_c.jpg

I had the butternut squash soup and Scott had the Arugula leaves salad followed by the tenderloin for me and the herb crusted pork chop for Scott.

45028906855_be6ea908eb_c.jpg

We did a quick switcheroo on the plates and put our meat on the other plate of vegetables as the pork chop comes on a risotto that evidently has cheese in it. :scared1: I’m sure you can guess how he found out….ha ha. He lived, major cheese disaster averted. ;)

For dessert we both wanted to share a sticky date pudding, Joel suggested the sundae, so I said I would have one of those and then he bought out two of the puddings and one sundae. He was not kind to the waistline!

Tonight we had the Whiskey tasting scheduled for 10 pm so we scooted out of dinner, got changed into comfy clothes and headed up to Cove Café. :dance3: We were then escorted up to the Concierge Lounge. They are still holding the tastings in the side that is directly above Cove.

32069966148_141f55472d_c.jpg

Looks yummy and it was a full group of people.

45891761852_b83fe85248_c.jpg

The tasting was really good and enjoyable. The cast member that did it was really knowledgeable and we learned a couple of things (although I’ve forgotten what we learned already!). Here were the whiskey’s that we tried.

32069965588_ffb56955a7_c.jpg

We stumbled back to our cabin at about 11:30 pm and found this little guy waiting for us. Mr. Froggy.

45028904085_97f75faf79_c.jpg

Scott was determined to watch something on TV but I drew the line when all he could find was Planes (I think that’s what it is.) I grumbled at him enough that he eventually turned it off just before midnight.

Up next….Cozumel

Well I'd say that's a pretty darn perfect sea day!!! :thumbsup2

Unpopular opinion here: ever since they started allowing jeans in Palo I think people have taken it as a sign to 'dress down' and I don't like that. Husband and I always make an effort to look nice in the adult-only restaurants. *steps off soap box*

Oh my gosh....that woman really had NO clue they stopped cleaning so she could get her views??? Wow.....though I do love that in the end the workers just put their stuff down and enjoyed it too. That's pretty cool!

Well done on the trivia you too!!! Wine tastes better when it's after a big WIN pixiedust:

I'm definitely not a dress-police kind of person, but even I was kind of shocked to see a blatant bathing suit cover up in Palo. :crazy2: But, I always find the humor in things and it kind of made me chuckle that it was a cover up for sale on the ship!! No hiding that. :lmao:

The wine definitely tasted much better as winning wine rather than big-fat loser wine. :rotfl:

What a great day. I saw our server from Palo, Leo, in your picture. He has also been around a long time. I know what you mean about the dress code. We were seated next to a couple of rather rotund ladies that had stretchy stretch pants
on with loose t-shirts over them and flip flops. I know people feel that they are entitled to wear what they want, but if you're going to have a dress code, I feel it should be enforced. I made an effort to look nice, I wish others would too.

Winning trivia is so much fun. We didn't get 100% either when we won. We only got 1 hat and DH loves it! Did you have Jo as your hostess? She's a pistol!

No, and now I'm blanking on the name of the host. We’ve had Jo before though - I have no idea how she manages to stay that fired up! She’s great.

Your brunch at Palo looks delicious! I can't wait to try it for the first time on my cruise coming up. How does the brunch work with the menu? Can you pick more than one entree or do you only get the one? What would you suggest for a first timer?

Those sunset pictures were gorgeous! I hope the workers take one in every so often because they are really breathtaking.

Your dinner looked delicious and that dessert, yum!

Yes, you can definitely pick more than one item from the menu! Lots of people rave over the chicken parmesan and it's definitely good, I just prefer other things. If I were picking two, I'd pick one of the egg dishes (their eggs benedict is really good) on the left side of the menu, and then one of the items on the right side of the menu. My personal favorites are the snapper and the artichoke ravioli. You could also order one of the flat breads and split it. The options are endless! :lovestruc Have a great time and I hope you enjoy your brunch - there is so much food to choose from that you will need to book another cruise just so that you can go back. :-)

That sounds amazing! I love flatbreads so that is definitely getting ordered.

Great start Jenny, and lovely photos of the Wonder sailing into Galveston ::yes:: I'd like to say 'Nice Crocs' Scott, but they really are hideous :rotfl2::rotfl2:Aww I miss Palo so much and that Brunch looked sooo good. Looking forward to reading about your Cozumel day after that whiskey tasting class ;)

Newbie jumping on board, I’m loving your report, just so much fun!

Thanks for following along. This one is taking me a while as somehow "real life" decided to go ahead and get busy!

They are better than the ones he had before @mandymouse ! Those could practically start a germ war on their own. Ha ha. I saw you updated your trippie - need to go look. :-)

Good stuff. It’s great to read all about it

I'm doubtful I'll get more done this week....maybe next week.

Great trippie so far :cool1:

We had a Joel on our 2017 xmas cruise on the Wonder, I wonder if it’s the same one :scratchin Thick black-rimmed glasses?

Glad the fog didn’t delay you! We will be cruising in two weeks on the Wonder and I am crossing fingers for no fog delay

Looking forward to reading the rest of your tale :goodvibes popcorn::

If you have a server like ours, you get all their favorite entrees in addition to the ones you ordered.

We have a 4-day cruise on the Wonder in two months (our first on the Wonder) so I really appreciate how often you sail and post trip reports!

Aww..thank you. We have been really fortunate that DCL came to Galveston. Rumor at the Port of Galveston is that they are negotiating another contract with them, so I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

Sorry to have been MIA and slacking on getting this done. Life got busy and so I haven't been on here at all. I'm going to try and get this wrapped up in the next week. :flower:

I can totally understand that! It took me a week to update my latest TR and I've had a heck of a week! Tis the season!
