I will be traveling from Charlotte NC on 12/12 after work with my wife and two small children. I hope to make it as far as Savannah GA area before stopping for an overnight hotel stay. Obviously I do not wish to stay in the ghetto, so anyone have a nice safe area/hotel they could recommend ?
It will be around 11 pm when we arrive.

When we travel we always look for Marriots and have never had a problem. Usually around $90 - $100 per night. They are clean and safe and we normally pick one that has a complimentary hot breakfast.

We are just north of Charlotte and the one time we did the late start/over night route we stayed at the Hampton inn, just off 95 in Savannah. Clean, nice breakfast .We had not really planned to stay there but it just worked out. Unless you are traveling during a really busy time, I would suggest playing the time by ear and make your reservation when you are about 30 minutes away. Sometimes you can get a lot further than you plan or the kids crash sooner.

We have stayed at the Wingate Savannah Airport 3 times. It is safe, clean, and easy off 95.

We're a Marriott stay family due to DH's status. I've made the drive from CLT to WDW several times leaving at night and stopping part way. At the Sav Airport exit (104 exit # I think) we stayed at the Fairfield. Nice rooms, decent breakfast. We've also stayed at the FF in Brunswick, exit #38 or so. Breakfast not quite as nice, but the rest of the hotel was great----one of the most comfy beds I've slept in ever. Full rehab 2 years ago and they won a national Marriott award after that. hth

PS. Travel tip of the day: watch your speed when you get within 5 miles of any state line (both sides). And ticketing in GA is bad throughout...I've come to the point where I just set cruise control at 5 miles over and leave it there for GA, then wave as I pass the police cruisers in hiding. Also, pay attn to general speed changes in GA, it changes a few times. Don't want anyone here to help balance those state budgets!! I can't drive through Rock Hill without seeing someone getting pulled over either.

We also stay in Savannah. I can't remember the exit number but it is easy off and on. There are several hotels on both sides of the exit as well as a couple places to eat and gas. We have stayed at the Hampton there. With a AAA discount it is about 90 - 100 a night. Great continental breakfast. And with no traffic, as there is ALWAYS construction in Georgia, a 4 hour trip to WDW!

I do think it is the one right before Airport Exit though!

We live in Pooler, GA, which is right off the airport exit. There are a lot of hotels at the Savannah airport exit that are reasonable and that area is very safe. There are also a lot of restaurants and stores right there if you need anything.

Sparty, I'm quite close to you! We're in Richmond Hill between exits 90 & 87. I have many friends in Pooler and am always shopping at Sams out there :)

OP: Richmond Hill is a safe place to stay. There's a Hampton Inn off of exit 87 that's nice. My family has stayed there multiple times. It's a low crime city (which is why we chose to live here) with a McDonalds, Arbys, Taco Bell, KFC, and more right at that exit!
