I have a reservation through rented points, I have already have linked it to my Disney experience account. How do I request a specific area/building? Can I do it directly or do I have to have the company that I rented the points through make the request?

You cannot make requests other than on MDE and those are very limited. You'll need the owner you rented from to make the request for you.

Room Category (on top of room type) can and should be given to the Renter for booking. Depends on booking category for Villas.

Ie - 2BR Dedicated vs 2BR Lockoff; Studio w/ Walk-in Shower vs Studio w/ Tub

That will get you into a category.

Then 7-10 days before your arrival you can fax a further room request directly to resort (touring plans has a handy tool) - either specific building (as long as it jives with your category), room number, or floors, proximity to amenities, etc. These may not be possible to fulfill.

The broker I rent excess points through does not accept any requests from renters. I guess it just shuts down complaints from people not getting their requests...though I never considered it, I understand why they do it.

I did a request with my Disney experience. Also I was able to send a fax. Ended up getting the room and area we wanted.

DVC doesn't accept faxes. They have asked members not to bother with them and make the request through Member Services.

You can also make a request through TP. I had the owner I rented from make a request when I booked the trip and then when it got a few weeks closer to arrival I made the same request with TP. When I checked in at the front desk the request was on file so one of them worked. If your room is not ready when you arrive you can also go to the front desk and ask what is available. When I got to the resort I checked in at the front desk to ask if they had my request, they did, but couldn’t meet it, but the CM was able to work with me so part of my request was met. I ended up loving the room view and location and was happy in the end it didn’t work out exactly as I planned.

I rented points to someone recently and they were able to make a room request (they didn't get it, but they did request it). I am pretty certain I made my request when doing check in through the app. I requested close to transportation and my room ended up being close to transportation. The person I rented points to ended up requesting a specific range of room numbers and ended up very far away from those rooms and about as far away from the lobby as any room in the resort. Since specific room numbers were not in the drop down I saw, I am guessing they typed the request in as text. Maybe that does not work as well as choosing one of the selection options provided.

If you rented through a broker, the owner may not be contractually obligated to make the MS call to make your request. The broker needs to contact the owner, the owner needs to call and wait on hold. It can be time consuming to add a request - and your owner may not have half an hour to wait on the phone - people using brokers use them so they don't need to bother. And the broker, as was mentioned above, doesn't want to deal with the complaints when the room request wasn't met. But you don't need to fret, DVC often doesn't take room requests seriously anyway.

You can make simple requests at check in through the app at check in.

I rented points before buying into DVC, faxed a request and got what I wanted.
DVC has asked members not to bother faxing since they usually just toss them in the trash and to make any requests through MS.

The broker that I have been renting excess points through regularly emails me to ask me to make requests on behalf of the points renter, such as room location requests, adding the dining plan, adding Disney Magical Express, adding or removing guests, and so on. I usually do this using the chat feature on the DVC member website.

I'd tell any broker who bothered me with that sort of stuff that this was the last time I was using them. I'll add ME and dining plan per contract, but room requests - that is why I use a broker to rent points - so I don't need to deal with someone else's vacation. I also think that ethically, members who have invested in the system should get advantage on room requests, and wouldn't add them for a renter.
