Hi All - hoping you can help solve the debate I am having with my sister regarding Space Mountain cars.

For some reason, I recall as a kid that I was able to ride WITH my mom or dad, like not in a separate seat? Were the cars ever set up so that 2 people could kind of sit together ? My sister says that this was never the case and they were always set up the way they are right now.

Anyone have a pic of the old cars, if there was such a thing?

Thanks in advance!!
Cheryl

You are correct. The cars used to be 2 in front and 2 in back. Changed I believe sometime in the 80's and not sure why. I know there are pics out there but I don't have any. First time I rode was in '86 when RCA had the sponsorship and I believe the cars were 2x then but had changed by the next time in '91.:thumbsup2

They were not side by side, but you would sit right in front of the other in a shared area. The old Space Mountain cars are actually used on the Matterhorn at Disneyland!

I rode for the first time is '79 and remember distinctly not being able to ride beside my parents, rather I had my cousin in front of me and my mom behind me. Neither one of them were very helpful as they both screamed their heads off the entire time. I was 3 and petrified. I vividly remember the back of my cousin's head and me being seated by myself.

Surely my mom would have been seated with me if that was an option.

2 seats per car,
Right, I could not be sure if my mom was in the same car, I know my cousin and I were in the same car.

So if there were only 2 in a car then she must have been in the car behind me.

After reading Dan's post I am now guessing that my mom and I sat together behind my cousin, I just don't remember sitting between my mom's legs. Which is not surprising, I knew she was behind me, and not sitting beside me.

It's hard to dispute pics.

Ok, I just saw it. That's the way I remembered it too (see post #2) until the "2 in a car" thing came up. I wondered if my memory had crashed since it happens from time to time!;)

Really? How cool is that!?! I was just at DL a couple of months ago for the first time .... I thought the Matterhorn cars reminded me of Space Mountain! :)

Thank you all SO much for your responses! I just knew I remembered that!

Thanks!!!!!

The old trains kinda reminded me of a log flume type vehicle. They were much easier to get in and out of...of course I was a little lighter in those days. :rolleyes1

I distinctly remember riding in front of my mom when I was 10. I also remember sliding down on the bench seat half way through the ride and finishing the ride lying on my back. I think about it now and think - there is no way I would let my child on those! My very slight grandmother had the same thing happen and they though she had a heartattack because she could not speak she was just trying to hold on! :rotfl:
