We are going on a cruise April 2021 and at the beginning of this virus, I was so glad that we weren’t going for a long time. But now that we are seeing that this is not a short-term thing, when do you think cruises will start back up again?

I suspect not until next year.
Mostly because I'm seeing the University of California considering all on-line classes next fall.

Universities are high contact environments, true. However, Universities are MUCH more important to society than cruise ships and Disney.

I think Disney and cruise ships will be among the LAST things to come back to "normal".

(Think of the nightmare that was that Princess cruise. NONE of the cruise lines OR the CDC want that to happen again.)

They're lower contact than a ship at sea, at least.

We have a cruise booked for next April as well. I am starting to worry that it is not booked out far enough if there is a “second wave”. Sure hope not!

I went to a Big 10 school. Even there, our dorms could have seen distancing (save from your roommate), and much of the contact was... optional, ahem.

Well, that's not the case at The University of Texas at Austin. Most of the on-campus dorms are very small, you must have a roommate, and there are community bathrooms. Not to mention the hallways are very tight. They feel very much like a cruise ship.

It would be interesting to know where people live and how that affects their voting for this poll. For me, I live in California and we have been hit with the virus pretty hard, in comparison to other states, so it makes me think the cruising industry won’t start up for a long while. For the fall, our schools are containing to prep for long distance learning.

I'm in northern Virginia and we're in the same boat as you. I'm a teacher in a very large county and w e are also preparing for online learning in the fall. That said, we are preparing so we won't be caught flat-footed again, not because the expectation is that we won't be back. This situation has been a giant wake-up call as far as emergency plans are concerned. The fact that plans are being made does not mean that they are going to be used, just that we don't want to be caught unawares.

Erin,
Thank you for continuing to teach the kids via long distance learning. I know it isn’t easy.

Hook 'em horns! Yeah, Jester Center isn't the ideal place to try to maintain social distancing...

Elementary schools aren't either, but they're going to have to open up this fall if the kids are going to keep learning. I'm a teacher & while we're doing all we can to maintain distance learning now, we're also prepared to do a lot of remediation in person in the fall because young kids just don't teach themselves very well. Especially the ones with uninvolved parents, and the ones with minimal access to technology & Internet, and the ones who don't speak English, and the ones who are developmentally delayed, etc. Millions of challenged kids across America are being especially hurt by school closures, so we need to open them up next fall regardless of virus numbers. Children's lives are just as important.

I was totally thinking of Jester when I posted this.

Schools need to open up in the Fall for learning and so parents can go back to work. Many parents don't have any sort of care during the day for their children except school and the after-school programs. My son goes to a school with a large number of native Spanish speakers. I know this time at home is probably hurting their learning. There is just only so much that can be done online and through teleconferencing. Also, their families are most likely to not be able to work from home and a lot of them probably are still working in food service, grocery, medicine, and construction. So, they may not have parents home during the day to encourage them to study. Our district had to provide wifi hotspots and laptops to many, many kids. They even have parked buses containing wifi hotspots near apartments and trailer parks. I don't want things opening up too early, but I just don't see the current situation being sustainable to the fall.

Very interesting poll results. I voted for August/Sept...primarily because that's when I'm set to cruise. The next few months will be crucial in terms of how the cruise industry further responds and we've already seen new restrictions and protocols drop which means the ships could be sailing a lot sooner than expected. If so, it will mean a lot of itinerary changes due to closed ports.

Ports are important to people so I'm not sure how Disney will handle it. If i'm on a 7-night and 3 of the ports are closed..it's basically all sea days which is unfortunate. It will just be interesting to see how DCL handles those cruises and if they offer a full refund if you are not satisified or only the option to rebook another cruise. When it comes to the contract....you are basically in the hands of Disney and if a ship does not dock you get refunded the port fees but this is a different situation as you know ahead of time where it will or won't be going.
