Need to replace our sliding glass door in the kitchen that leads to deck/yard.

Ours are about 35+ years old....no insulation at all.

I love the idea of blinds between the glass -- i know Lowes has a cheaper version but have not heard good things.

Looking for any reviews...

any idea on the cost - we need an 8ft...i'm thinking $5000 including installation

We replaced our sliding doors with the side by side doors at our old house, we got the inside blinds because I didn't want drapes. It was around $2500 installed and that was 5 years ago. It was a walkout basement so the blinds stayed down most of the time. Our new house has the Pella double doors (upgraded from a sliding door) and we use the blinds daily with no problems. One thing with the Pella is that it only opens one door, I would have paid the difference and got the one where they both open.

what size sliding doors? also did u have Pella install them?

thanks

We have a large floor to ceiling window in our dining room from pella with the blinds inside. It was here when we moved in so I don't know the cost. But the blinds seem very sturdy. I have two four year olds and when we moves in 18 months ago they played with those blinds like it was their job. Every time I turned around they were moving them up and down. I personally would have chosen a different color blind but that's personal preference

We bought a 5' pella sliding door a few years ago. It was thru Lowes I think. It was about 2.7k without the blinds including install. We really like the door. I think blinds for both windows would be about 500 more for both.

We had the pella sliding door in our last house. We loved the blinds between the glass - easy to keep clean and good privacy. A former homeowner was handy so he installed it himself. I don't know the cost, but it was their top of the line model at the time. That owner did great renovations on the house.)

The outer glass is energy efficient/double paned, but the inside glass is removable so you can clean between the panes. We never had a problem with the blinds, but you could easily fix it if needed. As someone posted up thread, only one side opens.

We had the auto-closing sliding screen door. Again, we loved it but it confuses people who aren't used to it. We had one particularly clueless visitor who regularly walked into the screen by trying to push it. He knocked it off track multiple times until I put a sign up at eye level that said <<<<SLIDE DOOR>>>>. (Side two pieces of card stock and attached magnets to sandwich them together on either side of the screen.)

Our contractor installed our door. I'm not sure of the size, but they are standard doors not anything special.

I have the double doors (36 plus 36 so 6 feet total across) with the blinds between the glass. Love them!

Mine were ordered through Lowes - cost of doors with blinds, low e glass, various other trims and whatever - was about $1500 just for the doors. Then I had a contractor install and it was part of a package of work so not sure of the full install cost...perhaps another $1000 - $1500. Also this was 4 years ago.

Marvin is a better quality product but it is more expensive. So it depends on your budget. I'm not sure how much more though since I was looking at windows.

Ours came from Lowes and my DH installed them. We have had them for over 10 years now and never had a problem. I absolutely love them. :goodvibes

I feel for you. Our sliding door to our screened porch is also 8' wide. That makes it crazy expensive to replace. We still have the old door in because we keep saying some day we'll close the back porch in so why spend $5k for a door that we don't plan to keep there very long? Dh could easily reframe the doorway to accommodate a 6' door but it would cut down on the view of our back yard which is very wooded/secluded/quiet and we enjoy it.
Good luck & hope you find a good deal.

[yEp, we also have a great view -- small kitchen so the door opens it up -- another reason y I want the blinds inside

You may want to consider french doors instead of sliding doors. All doors have have a variety of blind options.

I don't have Pella, can't remember what I have at the moment, BUT I have an 8 foot door. Because it was so large it was considered custom which bumped up the price. Also make sure you us know the warranty. My blinds broke within days of being installed - there is a magnet in the track that raises the inner blinds and for some reason it was letting go so the blinds wouldn't open more than half way. That said, not only did the installer come and see the problem, a rep from the blind company came and took video to take back to their quality department.

I have to say, too, that i don't use the blinds nearly as much as I thought I would. I've closed them maybe twice (the old door didn't have anything and I hated it, but it turns out I don't use it anyway).

I had mine done with other work being done on the house. I budgeted about $5000 for the door and don't think I went over that. That said I wouldn't have spent that much had I not been doing the other work.

Do they actually make 8 foot French doors? That would be 48 inches on each side. Just seems like an unwieldy size for a French door to the outside.

Edit - went looking - forgot all about the idea of adding side lites!

[i don't have the room for French doors to open

We ordered ours from Lowes and they also installed it. The blinds between the glass is wonderful.

There is no comparing the the quality of Pella windows from Pella ..with or without the blinds...to any other brand of window/doors.
it's like purchasing a quality piece of furniture..

My husband was a builder for many years....
