DBF and I are planning on packign some food items for Disney and I was wondering if I could check peanut butter? I've heard some weird things about it and I would like to know for sure.

Thanks! :)

if you are only flying domestically within the US it is not an issue

thanks!! I was actually going to write at the bottom of my post

"Hey Bavaria, got any info for this?" Since you're the transportation master! :cool2:

For once, I want to take a bit of exception to Bavaria :)

Peanut butter's densiity on the baggage scan makes it more likely your bag will be opened. The peanut butter should pass OK once they see it, but . . .
You might want to pack so the peanut butter is easy to licate and also make a written inventory of the bag's contents.

I agree, if you don't mind that they might open your luggage to check on your peanut butter you should be fine.

Just be sure you put it in the checked luggage. On our return home, my cousin put the jar of PB, she bought there and had been eating during the trip, in her carry on and she had to throw it away. Didn't really think it would be considered liquid.

I know that I have read this re chocolate as well, but last week I carried more than 80 kg of chocolate in my luggage with no issues at all. So in my vast experience transporting chocolate and Nutella within the US, it is not an issue... yes, they do say that it may lead to an inspection, but I have only had TSA open my suitcase about 3 times of ALL my flights

That's 175 pounds! I got busted for a pound of fudge - I'm sure it didn't help that I had an alarm clock and my camera charger in the bag.

:rolleyes1

I went to visit a chocolate factory in Germany. Lufthansa allows me 210lbs on international flights

Dear God woman.....where's mine????

As for the peanut butter, I have put a jar in my checked bag. Once the bag was inspected, another time it was not. So, I'm not sure if it was the peanut butter that precipitated the inspection. But, it is no problem to put it in the checked bags.

Did you place an order??? darlak has a standing order, I need to feed the LOSER thread, and I have to stock up for myself and family until my next trip you know....

oh, and one day I will post about the 'Great Nutella Disaster of Asia 2007' to explain in part why I added that domestically it isn't really an issue ;)

Unless you have a fuse or detonation cap attached to the top of the jar, I expect you'll be fine. ;)

Of course we can get Nutella here now, at least in the Boston area. I still find those German commercials proclaiming it a health food pretty comical. But I can certainly understand bringing in large quantities of echt deutsche Schokolade. My suitcases are usually weighed down with wine when returning from Germany these days. Of course, on the way there, I always pack a half-dozen jars of Skippy® Super Chunk® for the German relatives (without fuses or detonator caps tho).

Ah, but my dear orange friend, in America you have the not-so-healthy version of Nutella... for that one needs to buy it in Germany, or Italy, or Canada, or a few other countries. We have a thread on flyertalk.com about the 'real' Nutella and a few members are even willing to be suppliers if need be. ;)

I find the American version gets gummy after awhile. It will of course do in a pinch, but is not quite the same

Now, I did practice restraint and did not purchase the 5kg jar I saw in Italy two weeks ago

That peanut butter and 175 lbs of chocolate together!!!! World's biggest Reesie's Cup....YUM!:worship:
