I am doing the hospitality spread for the teachers tomorrow morning & I have to put a note in each of the teacher's boxes welcoming them back & telling them about the spread. I would like to put a little poem in the note. Anyone direct me to a short poem that is welcoming?

I really want to do a nice job with this since it is the first thing of the year.

Thanks fo any insight!

I don't have any ideas for you... but I wanted to say thank you for thinking of teachers on their first day back. I would really appreciate this if our PTA did something like this :thumbsup2

That's very nice of you!

I'm a 1st grade teacher, & our PTA usually does something like this.
I don't really pay attention to the poems though....on the 1st day, all I have time to do is grab a bagel, some juice, & run back to my room!! (So in other words...don't stress too much about the poem :teacher: The food will be remembered long after the poem)

A Teacher for All Seasons
A teacher is like Spring,
Who nurtures new green sprouts,
Encourages and leads them,
Whenever they have doubts.

A teacher is like Summer,
Whose sunny temperament
Makes studying a pleasure,
Preventing discontent.

A teacher is like Fall,
With methods crisp and clear,
Lessons of bright colors
And a happy atmosphere.

A teacher is like Winter,
While it’s snowing hard outside,
Keeping students comfortable,
As a warm and helpful guide.

Teacher, you do all these things,
With a pleasant attitude;
You’re a teacher for all seasons,
And you have my gratitude!

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING
By Mary Rita Schilke Korzan

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you displayed my first report, and I wanted to do another.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you fed a stray cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you gave me a sticker, and I knew that little things were special things.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you put your arm around me, and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt--but that it’s all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you smiled, and it made me want to look that pretty too.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, you cared, and I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking--I looked...and wanted to say thanks for all those things you did when you thought I wasn’t looking.

WHOSE CHILD IS THIS?
Author Unknown"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"

"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."

One Hundred Years from now
(excerpt from "Within My Power" by Forest Witcraft)
One Hundred Years from now
It will not matter
what kind of car I drove,
What kind of house I lived in,
how much money was in my bank account
nor what my clothes looked like.
But the world may be a better place because
I was important in the life of a child.

Teacher's Prayer
Author Unknown
Lord, Please help me,
To strengthen their voices,
bodies and minds,
To express their feelings and
control them sometimes,
To explore what's near
and venture afar,
But most important to love
who they are.

THE CREATION OF THE TEACHER
Author Unknown
The Good Lord was creating teachers. It was His sixth day of 'overtime' and He knew that this was a tremendous responsibility for teachers would touch the lives of so many impressionable young children. An angel appeared to Him and said, "You are taking a long time to figure this one out."
"Yes," said the Lord, " but have you read the specs on this order?"
TEACHER:
…must stand above all students, yet be on their level
... must be able to do 180 things not connected with the subject being taught
... must run on coffee and leftovers,
... must communicate vital knowledge to all students daily and be right most of the time
... must have more time for others than for herself/himself
... must have a smile that can endure through pay cuts, problematic children, and worried parents
... must go on teaching when parents question every move and others are not supportive
... must have 6 pair of hands.
"Six pair of hands, " said the angel, "that's impossible"
"Well, " said the Lord, " it is not the hands that are the problem. It is the three pairs of eyes that are presenting the most difficulty!"
The angel looked incredulous, " Three pairs of eyes...on a standard model?"
The Lord nodded His head, " One pair can see a student for what he is and not what others have labeled him as. Another pair of eyes is in the back of the teacher's head to see what should not be seen, but what must be known. The eyes in the front are only to look at the child as he/she 'acts out' in order to reflect, " I understand and I still believe in you", without so much as saying a word to the child."
"Lord, " said the angel, " this is a very large project and I think you should work on it tomorrow".
"I can't," said the Lord, " for I have come very close to creating something much like Myself. I have one that comes to work when he/she is sick.....teaches a class of children that do not want to learn....has a special place in his/her heart for children who are not his/her own.....understands the struggles of those who have difficulty....never takes the students for granted..."
The angel looked closely at the model the Lord was creating.
"It is too soft-hearted, " said the angel.
"Yes," said the Lord, " but also tough, You can not imagine what this teacher can endure or do, if necessary".
"Can this teacher think?" asked the angel.
"Not only think," said the Lord,. "but reason and compromise."
The angel came closer to have a better look at the model and ran his finger over the teacher's cheek.
"Well, Lord, " said the angel, your job looks fine but there is a leak. I told you that you were putting too much into this model. You can not imagine the stress that will be placed upon the teacher."
The Lord moved in closer and lifted the drop of moisture from the teacher's cheek. It shone and glistened in the light.
"It is not a leak," He said, "It is a tear."
"A tear? What is that?" asked the angel, "What is a tear for?"
The Lord replied with great thought, " It is for the joy and pride of seeing a child accomplish even the smallest task. It is for the loneliness of children who have a hard time to fit in and it is for compassion for the feelings of their parents. It comes from the pain of not being able to reach some children and the disappointment those children feel in themselves. It comes often when a teacher has been with a class for a year and must say good-bye to those students and get ready to welcome a new class."
"My, " said the angel, " The tear thing is a great idea...You are a genius!!"
The Lord looked somber, "I didn't put it there."

Children Learn What They Live
Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph. D.
If children live with hostility,
they learn to fight.
If children live with ridicule,
they learn to be shy.
If children live with tolerance,
they learn to be patient.
If children live with encouragement,
they learn confidence.
If children live with praise,
they learn to appreciate.
If children live with fairness,
they learn justice.
If children live with security,
they learn faith.
If children live with approval,
they learn to like themselves.
If children live with acceptance, and friendship,
they learn to find love in the world.

You are very welcome. I think we (teachers) sometimes forget the effect we have on these sweet babies. I know I do. We all need encouragement (doctors, clerks, lawyers, construction workers, etc.). Okay, now I'm getting teary...

I really like some of these poems! I may copy a couple to a Word document and save it for Teacher Appreciation week. I am sure the teachers my kids have would love it!!! Thanks for posting!!!:thumbsup2

I have used these as end of the year poems but I'm sure they would work year round! Good luck!

A Teacher's Little Shadows

I saw a happy teacher
With eyes full of laughter
And many little shadows
Came following after.

Wherever she moved,
They were always right there
Holding onto her skirt,
Hanging onto her chair.
Before her, behind her-
Many adhesive pairs.

"Don't you ever get weary
As, day after day,
Your many little tagalongs
Get in your way?"

She smiled as she shook
Her pretty head,
And I'll always remember
The words that she said.

"It's good to have shadows
That run when you run,
That laugh when you're happy
And hum when you hum -
For you only have shadows
When your life's filled with sun."

The Starfish Story

A teacher was walking along a beach that was covered
with many starfish left in the sun by the receding tide.
Seeking to help, she picked up a starfish
and tossed it back in the ocean. A man, amused by her action, said to her, "There are too many starfish.
You will never make a difference.”
Discouraged, she began to walk away.
Suddenly, she turned around, picked up another starfish,
and tossed it as far as she could back into the sea.
Turning to the man, she smiled and said,
“ I made a difference to that one!”

Thank you for making a difference in student’s lives!

This is a poem given to all teachers and parents by the PTA at my son's school at the beginning of the year.

PARTNERS

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher; the tools used
Were books and music and art
One, a parent with guiding hands,
A gentle and loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled,
With a touch both deft and skilled.
The parents labored side by side
And all the values filled.

And when at last their task was done
They looked at what they'd wrought
The beautiful shape of the precious child
Could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed it would have failed
If one had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school,
And behind the teacher, the home.
