all this "code" stuff? I know that there are general public codes that you call for your reservation and tell them certain letters as your code (we booked our April trip with this), but what are AP codes? How do you get them? Do you all buy annual passes just to be able to get these codes/discounts?

AP codes are just what you said and yes, you are SUPPOSED to have one before using the code, but as mentioned here on the DIS many have gotten the code to later purchase the APs when arriving at Disney.
