Myakka River State Park?

Is anyone really familiar with this campground? We just made reservations for Thanksgiving week, and I'm looking for information about specific sites, what to do and see, etc.

I have not been there, but it does look like a place to check out the next time we head to Florida. We enjoyed our trip to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Refuge Park in 2003, and this one looks like a similar place. You sure do have a lot of state parks in Florida.

I have not been to Myakka River State Park. But we went to The Alafia River State park in early May. The site was really big and the campground was very clean. Only down fall was that there was only 1 shower luckly there is only 30 campsites and It wasn't very busy. There wasn't a whole lot to do there except bicycle trails and horse trails, maybe some boating but I'm a little leary of boating with gators!

Myakka State Park is beautiful!! Much better than Oscar Schearer IMHO. I haven't camped there in years, but the sites when I last camped there were pretty much "State Issue" - W/E, no sewer, no paved sites. Common dump station. There's a lot of trails to hike/bike & some neat stuff inside the park. You should enjoy it!

There's a lot of trails to hike/bike & some neat stuff inside the park. You should enjoy it!

Been to both Myakka and Oscar Scherer as a day visitor (my dd won an earth day art contest there at one time) and although I can't speak to the camping facilities, I think that Oscar Scherer was great for the swimming, boating and multiple trails to enjoy as well as ample picnic tables we noted. We didn't spend as much time at Myakka but it seems larger and they have a great lake to hike to and look out over.

We live in Sarasota, and I've grown up going to Myakka Park. The camping facilities are better at Oscar Scherer, IMHO, and Oscar Scherer is very close to the gorgeous beaches. However...Myakka is much bigger, you can rent bikes and take long rides, you can take the Gator Gal boat ride, there are hiking trails, there is a walkway out into the river where you can see birds, alligators, etc.

The best picnic area, I think, is called Clay Gulley, and it's in the back of the park. That's where we used to do Mother's Day each year.

I haven't camped at Oscar in years - late 70's. So if you're saying the sites are better at Oscar than at Myakka, I guess they've done some major upgrades!! In the 80's & early 90's we liked to camp at Myakka (also lived in Sarasota then), and Hillsborough State Park. Being old "forts" now, we only go to FtW. That's why we moved from Sarasota/Bradenton to Polk County - to be closer to WDW.

One bit of advice for Myakka - keep the food under lock and key. They have thieving raccoons there!! YIKES!!

And Al....yes, Myakka was home to Fat Albert. He's probably a pair of boots by now!

That will make it fun! It sounds like the raccoons at Fort Desoto! lol

Fort Desoto was our first choice -- we actually camp there every Thanksgivig weekend. But this year, it filled up a midnight, exactly 6 months before, so we didn't get any sites. Myakka was our second option.
