Based on https://www.disneytouristblog.com/best-worst-weeks-disney-world-crowd-calendar/ I have a trip booked for the second week in March, but I am now having second thoughts if I should push it to the first week in May. I am going solo so I don’t need to schedule for school holidays, in fact I would like to avoid them as much as possible.
That blog suggests there is a small window in March that can be quiet, but it’s all about how many schools have spring break that week.
May is technically shoulder season, so should be quieter, but this year the weather was very hot which I’d like to try and avoid.
which would you suggest and why?

It sounds like you know there are pros and cons of each. I was there end of April/beginning of May this year and it did indeed get very hot in May. Usually it is quiet then crowd-wise. When it's hot we do early morning and evenings in the parks.

In 2025 I am going March 16-21, with Easter being April 20 I am hoping for not too crazy busy, but it is the time frame I can go so I will work with it. As a solo it is a bit easier to deal with crowds IMO.

I never bother with crowd calendars, but looking at what you linked it says March 23-30 will be worst, sounds like you will be there 2 weeks earlier.

March. I’ve gone in at different times in March many times and I’ve been pleased with crowd levels and weather. 2023 I went in May and it was too hot for me.

Hi, I've been going the 3rd or 4th week of March for many years and can tell you the crowds the 3rd week are low for some reason. I've noticed the Disney resorts are also lower priced that week so that must mean they expect less people. The 4th week has been crazy the last few years. Just this year, there were so many people commenting on the low crowds that 3rd week, no one could believe it was mid March. The weather is usually perfect, not too hot, not too cold and not much rain. I was there this year again May 7-10 and there was not a cloud in the sky but very hot - 95 degrees everyday. I loved it as I don't like to worry about rain coming and love the hot weather. Crowds were about the same as that 3rd week in March. If you don't like the heat I would definitely recommend that 3rd week in March.

First half of May is my go-to. Yes, it's HOT, but that's how I like it. That way I know I'm in Florida. Crowd levels are entirely acceptable. If you're trying to avoid the heat, you probably want to avoid May.

I saw those reports this year and hope 2025 is the same! I can imagine though if it falls closer to Easter this would not hold.

I like to go the last week or so in April, most school vacations and Spring breaks are over. Crowds aren't bad, and it's warm, but not horrid.

Oh yeah for sure when Easter is in March it changes everything. April should be interesting next year with Easter on April 20.

It'll be the double dose of Easter week + school vacation week in parts of New England. It happened in 2022 as well.

We found the last week of April to be delightful, but we were very fortunate weather-wise and crowd-wise. Easter in 2025 occurs on 4/20, so that is a consideration. Early May used to be my personal favorite time to visit, but this past May was very warm. I would probably choose March to (hopefully!) avoid very warm temperatures.

We went in February to avoid the heat one year, that backfired....terribly. Ironically if we had stayed in April it would have been much cooler (but also much wetter)

I usually find that late April/early May is a great time to go!

It's a trade off. In March you will probably have more rain days but it should be cooler. In May it will be hotter.

Spring school break is a consideration for March. Luckily, Easter falls on April 20; so, you will avoid that school break crowd.

Flower and Garden show at Disney is May1-10 and that brings in a crowd.

Like others have said, it was very very hot the 1st week in May this year. I generally go to WDW one week beginning of December (festival of the holidays) and one week late April or early May (flower and garden festival). However, this year was crazy hot and i just couldn't stay in the parks for an entire day. I have also gone in March before, but my worries are always the same...Spring Break crowds and its always so difficult to find out exactly what schools have off when. I'm sure you'll really enjoy yourself anyway. Good luck with whichever you choose.
