We are in the process of drawing up renovation plans. I have a colonial with 5 bedrooms upstairs. We have 4 kids under 7 yrs old. We have plenty of room to put it where we want. I definately don't want it in the basement. Currently the laundry room is on the main floor. I like it because its right off the kitchen which is the focus of all our family activity. What I don't like is the dirty laundry piled around in view and even the clean laundry usually is stacked on the chest freezer which is between the W/D. I'm thinking of putting it upstairs where the bedrooms are. Less schlepping loads of clothes up & down stairs. And I think as we get older it would be easier to have it on the floor where the bedrooms are.

Where is your laundry room. What are the pros/cons of upstairs where the bedrooms are???? Would you change it ????

In all the houses I've had, the laundry was on the first floor, which I never thought I minded, UNTIL I just bought my new house and the laundry room is upstairs. What a difference! I love folding the laundry and opening the door to the bedroom/ bathroom/ kid's rooms and placing the clothes in the dressers, and towels on the shelves. It is such a timesaver.
I work days and try to do a load of laundry every other evening. It's nice to not have to run up and down stairs trying to get everything put away when I am tired.

Well if I was in your shoes, I would put it upstairs.

The con I can think of would be the noise from it if people are trying to sleep and it is running.

Not scheppling clothes upstairs would be great. :goodvibes

We have two laundry areas. One in the basement and one by the master. I do clothes only in the one by the master, this prevents pile up. The one in the basement is for general household use sheets, blankets, towels....

The dual system keeps me organized and clutter free

Definitely upstairs.

I would rather run up and down the stairs every once in a while than schlepp everything down and then back up.

I like mine downstairs on the main floor. It's one trip in the morning with a basket - then however many loads of laundry while I am downstairs watching TV/on computer/making dinner - and one trip up at night.

Oh, and DH schleps the clothes. ;)

This is our sixth house, and for the last two homes, we've had the laundry upstairs.

It is unbelievably wonderful.

Once you've had it up, you don't want it down.

UPSTAIRS!!!

I love it upstairs, it's in our hall bathroom. This is the first house where I have laundry upstairs, and I will never have it anywhere else. All your laundry is generated upstairs, so it makes no sense to me to schlep it downstairs only to schlep it back up when you are done.

This is our first home with the laundry (and all bedrooms) upstairs.

We'll never, ever go back to having the laundry on a floor other than the one with the bedrooms!

It's wonderful being able to bring the laundry to the laundry room without having to lug it from one floor to the other.

Not to mention (but I will :teeth: ) it's a great way to sneak in a bit of extra exercise (running up and down the stairs to do the laundry). :teeth:

For me, it all depends where the master bedroom is located. In this house my MB is located on the first floor so it is more convenient to have the laundry room adjacent to the kitchen. In our other home our MB is located on the second floor and the laundry room is adjacent to the MB.

I have a traditional colonial and my Laundry room is upstairs. I wouldn't have it any other way. No cons at all IMO.

In my next house, the laundry room will DEFINITELY be on the same floor as the bedrooms!
Ours is an old 2-story home with a basement. The bedrooms are on the 2nd floor, and the laundry room is in the basement!! I absolutely HATE having to lug all of the dirties down 2 stories, and then back up when they're clean... :faint:

I think that the closer your laundry room can be to the bedrooms/bathrooms, the better!! :thumbsup2

My laundry room is in the basement but I always thought it would be neat to have it upstairs.

The only con I can see with having a laundry room upstairs would be if something went wrong with a pipe or water connection and a leak occured. Water would go through the floor and into the ceiling under it.

this is the primary reason we moved the laundry to the main floor instead of the 2nd story. In addition, the main floor is often more sturdy than 2nd story floors and there's less noise and vibration (though a concrete basement floor is still ideal) I was just happy to get the washer and dryer out of the scary 120 year old basement

I have an upstairs laundry, and I don't know how I survived before I had it. Definitely the best choice.

Mine is downstairs and I would love to have it upstairs.

When we built our house we put the laundry on the first floor with the master bedroom. The children's bedrooms are upstairs but we plan on being here forever so when we can't do steps everything we'll need will be on the first floor.

upstairs!

we bought a home with the laundry in what would have been the fourth bedroom. I start a load of laundry before I even go downstairs in the morning. In the evening, I spend all my time upstairs so it is easy to be doing laundry all that time.

When we first bought the house, I was disappointed there was no mudroom. I would still like that kind of set up coming in from the garage, but would not move the laundry.

A first floor laundry wouldn't be too terrible, but I hate having the laundry in the basement!!!!

:)

ours is on the first floor and I hate it. Upstairs would definitely be better except on the odd chance of a leak/flood.

I would put it on what ever floor you spend the most time. If you are on your main level the most then you will be running up and down the stairs to do the laundry if you put the laundry room upstairs.
