I definitely want all cotton percale, this is the type of fabric that really high end 'hotel' sheets are made from. Not the sateen. It doesn't breathe!!!

These seem harder to find.
I see that L L Bean has two affordable options.
Has anybody had their percale sheets.

The 280 thread count Pima Cotton sound like they would be the best.
But, they have a new 'Sunwashed Percale', 220 thread count, that is supposed to be enzyme washed for softness.

I don't know which ones to order!

I could be wrong but if you want really soft high end sheets you need a much higher thread count..I would want to feel them before you buy them. But I think anything under 800 thread count isn't soft...but I am kindof picky that way.

We have the 280s. They're pretty good. They definitely breathe. I actually think that 800 thread count sheets are ridiculous. They tear and break down easier and I don't think they're necessary softer.

Thanks!

Yes, Keetmom, thread count only means so much....

And, one must note that percale and sateen are two very different types of woven fabric.

In fact, it is the higher thread count 'sateen' that just does not breathe, because it is hundreds of teeny-tiny miniscule threads woven so very, very, tightly. Note, You can have a 400 thread count sheet that has more cotton and a higher 'weight' than a 600 or 800. That does not make the 800 thread count a good/better sheet.

Cotton is soft...
It is the quality of the cotton fibers and the diameter of the cotton fiber filaments, etc... that can matter.

Luxury Frette type sheets are a nice thread count 'percale'. Not sateen.
The nicest Frette are higher than 280, but nowhere even near 600.

Yes, you can buy luxury percale sheets at a higher thread count than 280, (Frette) but one would have to be independently wealthy!!!!! ;)

I have a good quality, high thread count, all cotton, sateen on my bed right now.... I am glad that they are now needing replaces... These sheets are heavy! I remember when we bought them, and my husband brought the package in and handed it to me, I was llke 'whoa'... seemed like they weighted about ten pounds! And, this sateen doesn't breathe enough for me.

I now have wonderful, lightweight, down pillows, and a lightweight down comforter. My sheets are just not workin' with it.

Okay, enough 'Sheet Fabrics 101'.
Lots of info online about all of this if anyone else here is interested!

I hate sateen. It snags on my husband's rough, old feet and seems to be too hot on my 58yo menapausal body, :scared:. I'm going for the Pima Cotton. I have a Pima nightgown and it's amazing. I might order a set of each though because I noticed my fave sheets(which were my moms for years) are getting really worn.

OMG!!! You just nailed it... I had even mentioned to my husband that these sheets that I want should be like the sheets our mom's had YEARS ago!

And, I am like you... our nice, high thread count, sateen sheets are really really good.. they have held up,(until now the bottom sheet is starting to wear) and are great with absolutely no pilling or anything... But, they are too heavy and don't breathe enough for this 50 year old body! :rotfl2:

I have been searching for these sheets and found them online...very similar to Comphy from Costco (Comfy?) and Spalena sheets, but I actually think these are even softer plus much less expensive. I bought them during a fundraiser and just love them. I realize that sheets are a personal preference, but I am menopausal and these breath! Most importantly, they do not wrinkle and my bed looks freshly made...sooo nice! Anyway, I can't live without them! I have the sheets issue taken care of, but does anyone have a suggestion for a source for extra long dust skirts...like a 22"+ drop for a super tall bed? :)
