Has anyone tried buying the portable cell phone chargers offered at the parks? We generally bring one with us but it so hard keeping charged. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences using it and trading it in for a fully charged one.

One of the blogs I watch - The Tim Tracker has used the one at Disney many times. Even blogged about it. I believe he bought his from the company for $20 instead of the $30 at Disney. Just last night he said he exchanged a fuelrod that he had gotten at the Cincinnati airport - another blog as to why they were there. They seem to be pretty good. And you can exchange them at any FuelRod location - not just Disney.

I have heard good things about the FuelRods so it is a good option for people.

I got one and love it! Really nice being able to swap it out for a charged one any time.

Planning on getting one at my local airport and using in the parks. It is $20 there and $30 in parks. I have a charger but it is so heavy and my charging cable so long it is a pain. Think this will be easier. Would be nice if our local parks get it too (Cedar Point). Just need to look up where the kiosks are in the parks.

We have these but also have extra batteries for the Galaxy 5's we carry. Batts work better for us. Of course if your phone doesn't let you do that then a portable charger works. Walgreens sells these too for cheap.

You can also buy them online for $20 + $5 shipping at http://www.fuel-rod.com/

The website has a location finder that will help you locate a kiosk near you. In my case there are none nearby, so online saves $5 over the Disney price. Shipping is a $5 regardless of how many you order.

The advantage these have over the cheaper ones you can get at drug stores is that you can exchange as frequently as needed for a fully charged one in the Disney parks. If want to buy one that can't be exchanged, but have a much higher capacity search amazon for anker brand portable usb chargers.

I dont see any locations at Disney. Was the OP talking about something else or....?

According to Josh at easywdw the locations are:

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park
  • Island Mercantile
Epcot
  • Disney Traders
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
  • Celebrity 5 & 10
Magic Kingdom
  • Curtain Call Collectibles
  • Tomorrowland Light & Power Co.
  • Big Top Souvenirs
  • Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe
Disney Springs
  • Marketplace Disney Photo Imaging
  • DisneyQuest

We really debated doing this, but read that they will only charge an iPhone 6 to 70% or so. With the teens as well as the adults in our group, that would be a lot of exchanging and in Epcot, AK and HS there is only 1 location. We ended up getting a bigger one, Anker brand, from Amazon for essentially the same price, which should be able to charge almost all of our phones once per day without charging it in-between. It may end up being a pain, but we are going to give it a shot.

I do love the idea of the fuel rod, though.

I got a portable charger from Bealls Outlet for about $10
