It's MARVEL-ous on the MAGIC! Oct 2017 Canada Coast Cruise COMPLETE! See Ya Real Soon!

Great start! We will be on the Magic in January and can't wait. It will be our 2nd cruise (first one was on the Wonder which also has a shawarma station I think). Can't wait to read more about your trip!

Oh cool! The shwarma station was a really nice snack! I was bored with burgers and hot dogs and I didn't really like the pizza, it was bland but shwarma gets a thumbs up for me!
Thanks for reading!

I’m almost a week late, but I’m here!

This cruise looks so cool to me and I think sailing out of NYC would be amazing.

We are going on the Magic for the first time this summer. I’ll have to go back and reread that first TR again.

Hi!! Great seeing you here!
It was sooo much fun, I loved sailing out of NYC. It makes things so much easier and I can over pack if I want to!
The Magic is awesome! Not as grand as the Dream class ships but it made it much quicker to get anywhere. We were literally just upstairs from the Buena Vista theater and just 3 flights up was Cabanas and the drink station.

all caught up and following along. I love all your trip reports!

Thank you so much!! :)

Following along

Thank you!! :)

Love the video and it really helps me get a better sense of the size of the room. How fun to have that FB meet at the start of the cruise! I’m pretty convinced I’m not organized enough to do fish extenders, haha.

Thank you! The rooms are small but much more spacious than I imagined them to be. It's about 50 sq ft smaller than our room on the Fantasy but we also had my sister on that cruise.
I was not that great imagination-wise with my fish extender gifts. It was our first time doing it and I didn't have time to be crafty or unique. I pretty much bought stuff on amazon and etsy and bundled them together. I got drawstring Mickey backpacks for the ladies, a Matching lanyard for the guys, and a shared room gift of a Mickey bottle opener that looked like a key. (We had an adults-only FE). It was great receiving the unique gifts from everyone though. Lots of tote bags, some embroidered or painted with Mickeys or the cruise line logo. Lots of sweets. A lot of handmade stuff. I was impressed, but I don't think I'd do it again unless leaving from NYC just because of the amount of stuff you have to pack and bring home.

Following along! Can't wait to hear about your cruise!!!

Thank you and welcome!

Day 1 Part 3: Our first evening and dinner at Animator's Palate

Here's another video I put together during embarkation. It shows a bit of the Sail Away party while having some shwarma, and walking around the pool decks. You'll notice how there was no one at the adult pool while the main pool had much more activity, although that pool was covered with a dance floor. The live music was nice at the adult pool! But no one was around to listen to them! You'll also notice how empty deck 10 was during the Sail Away party. On previous cruises all the decks were PACKED, you can barely find a spot, but on this cruise it was just lovely.

We went to Senses Spa to buy Rainforest Room passes. Even though it was not as nice as the Fantasy's it was still a great way to unwind and relax. We literally went there every day and I loved taking naps on the heated loungers. I saved all my Disney reward gift cards, and every Disney GC I got as a gift over the past year and a half so that we could go to the spa multiple times on this trip. We had 3 different treatments booked before the cruise: a couples massage, an exotic Rasul treatment, and a pedicure for me. Since we got the Rainforest room passes I thought the Exotic Rasul was kinda like the same thing. You're just in a steam room with scrubs and lotions, so I just changed it to another couples massage. While there we were also told about the port special, a Pamper Package which combines a massage, scalp massage and reflexology for a special price during port days. Since we did not have anything planned for our day in Sydney we booked that for the afternoon and they were able to give us a couples room for that as well. I also confirmed my MIL's massage and facial package that we got her for her birthday which was two weeks prior to the cruise. We were all set in the pampering department, and I could not wait for that part of the cruise to begin! Just want to say, the staff in the spa were excellent. They all remembered us by name, and were just so sweet, maybe because we spent a lot of money there, hahaha.

We had 2nd seating so our dinner did not start until 8:15. The last time we cruised with my in-laws we had first seating and I thought it was too early, but they said the 2nd seating was too late! Oh well, they got used to it by the end of the cruise though. Tonight was the welcome show at 6:15pm which everyone went to except for Steve and I. I don't really care for the welcome show that much and I wanted to walk around the Magic and check out the stores when they were open. Steve decided to rest in the room for a bit.

I went to the atrium and took some pictures. I always love all the detail on the ironwork:

You'll notice all the Halloween decorations! And note the tree which was empty...for now.

And love the windows which had the pumpkin motif. There were also spiderweb overlays as well which were pretty cool.

I ventured over to the stores and checked out all the Marvel Day at Sea merchandise. Some really cute things, which I didn't really have the money for since I spent it all at the spa, hahaha. But I got some practical stuff, like t-shirts and there was also a throw blanket which was a purchase with purchase with the MDAS logos on it that I got as well.

Yay, my first character pictures of the trip! I must say I took a lot more on this trip than I usually do. I turned into a mini Chunkysis!

At 8:15 we all met up at Animator's Palate...our table was #61 and we got a table to ourselves. It wasn't hard to do so as 2nd seating wasn't crowded at all so if even if you made a request for a 2-top table it will most likely be granted.

We met our serving staff, head server JC, server Desmond, and assistant server Victoria. Victoria was Scottish and was a dead ringer for Merida with her bright red hair. She had one of those rather brusque demeanors, friendly but not the overly-sweet accommodating type. I liked her immediately although I think it took a bit of time before she warmed up to us because my in-laws are not the most talkative kind, and Steve's aunt didn't speak English very well. So our table was rather quiet with myself and Steve leading a lot of the conversation so we weren't the most boisterous table. So I asked her a few questions to get to know her better. I asked her if Merida was her favorite princess. To my surprise she said no! She said she cringes whenever she hears Merida because she doesn't like hearing her own accent! She said she loves Anna though, who is another redhead! Desmond was from India and he was very nice too. JC was probably one of the best head servers we've had, definitely coming around more often that other head servers have done in the past.

When we sat down I figured out that tonight's dinner was going to be the "show" they usually have in Animator's Palate. This is different from the animator's night where your drawing comes to life, that was later in the week. We had not experienced drawing night on the Magic before because our first cruise was only a 5-night, we've only done it on the Fantasy and their version of Animator's Palate looks different.

My favorite butter knives. I use mine at home all the time! You can purchase these in the gift shop on board the ship.

To start I got some specialty drink which I thought sounded like the Magical Star cocktail at WDW, but it didn't taste as good. Way too sweet! It was the same blue though, minus the glow cube. I also got an iced tea. Steve got his usual diet coke, and all the parentals got hot teas. They are very Chinese and they drink a LOT of tea so they requested that at every meal, until towards the end when I think Steve's dad just got tired of tea and he kept asking for Coke!

Steve liked it but I thought it was only ok. The ham wasn't as good as other serrano hams and it was salty, but if you're a big fan of cured meats then give this a try.

I also had the Creamy Butternut Squash Soup, which was quite good, and served hot with a drizzle of sour cream. I love that touch. It's not as good as the version they have at AKL, that one is crazy good! That will forever be my favorite butternut squash soup (and Chunkysis's too). AP's version wasn't super creamy but I was ok with that since my truffle pasta was already pretty creamy and cheesy.

Here's a little video of the festivities that night, including some time in the atrium before dinner:

Overall a very nice first dinner in my favorite rotational restaurant! I was very happy with my pasta pursettes. Our service team was really nice, and we were really happy with them but they weren't the effusively friendly and proactive types we had seen in the past. They were also crazy busy. I am thinking the 2nd seating may have been short-staffed.

Coming up...I meet a famously undead pair...

Yay, my first character pictures of the trip! I must say I took a lot more on this trip than I usually do.
And what cute ones they are, too!!! :cutie:

I turned into a mini Chunkysis!
:rotfl:

My favorite butter knives.
So adorable!!! I think we all need these in our lives ::yes::

I believe this was the Crunchy Walnut cake with chocolate mousse.
Well now this dessert just has Tracy written all over it :rotfl2:

I'm here. Looks like a great start to your cruise and first meal. Can't wait to explore more of the North East with ya!

The adult pool area looks nice- I just hate when the loung chairs are on top of each other- I need personal space!!! Cannot wait to hear all about the spa. That sounds divine!! I would totally go for the later seating too. Do you also pick where to start the rotation or is that random? Love those butter knives.

Following along. I’m so glad I found your report. I’ve read a bunch of your WDW trip reports and they’re always one of my favorites!

We just booked a 4 night cruise to Canada out of New York next October. I’ve sailed in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Alaska, but never from New York to Canada. What was the motion of the ship like for sea-sickness prone peeps? Was it as rough as the Caribbean can be?

And what cute ones they are, too!!! :cutie:

Thank you! Had to get one with Captain Mickey at least once on the trip!

So adorable!!! I think we all need these in our lives ::yes::

Absolutely.
Well now this dessert just has Tracy written all over it :rotfl2:

I can totally see that!!! :)

Great trip report so far. I love the added videos..

Thank you!!! I tried with the video...I can't say I maintained it throughout the trip but at the beginning I was just so excited I was recording everything!

I love your shirt!

That restaurant looks awesome too.

Thank you! It's from hot topic!
I think you'd really like this restaurant. It's a lot of fun, there's always a show of some kind in there!

I'm here. Looks like a great start to your cruise and first meal. Can't wait to explore more of the North East with ya!

Hi Kari!! Great seeing you here!
It was a wonderful start to our cruise I can't wait to delve into the good stuff, like Palo brunch!

I would totally go for the later seating too. Do you also pick where to start the rotation or is that random? Love those butter knives.

All the pools were relatively empty throughout this cruise just because it wasn't your typical summer weather, but i saw lots of people with blankets lounging and reading throughout the cruise even when it got cold on days at sea.
The early seating is at 5:45 and later is at 8:15, so it's either too early or too late, but later is better for me as I can usually eat a big lunch. :)
You don't normally pick the rotation and it's assigned when you check in at the pier but you can request one over another. However, I did that on our last cruise and got the wrong rotation. They were able to change it for me though!

Thank you so much for reading my TRs!!
I think you'll really enjoy the Canada cruise. Leaving from NYC and heading north was perfect, we did not feel any movement. Coming back down was a little different, I think we hit the remnants of a storm and we got some huge swells, but thankfully it was our last day on the ship - it was not pleasant. The rest of the time was fine. :)

I'm following! Your first meal in AP looks amazing! I'm very impressed with all of your spa treatments booked. That sounds like a perfect vacation to me haha

This sounds awesome! Way to pamper yourselves!

The last time we cruised with my in-laws we had first seating and I thought it was too early, but they said the 2nd seating was too late! Oh well, they got used to it by the end of the cruise though.

Bahaha never satisfied!

Some really cute things, which I didn't really have the money for since I spent it all at the spa, hahaha.

:rotfl:

Yay, my first character pictures of the trip! I must say I took a lot more on this trip than I usually do. I turned into a mini Chunkysis!

I think this is my favorite cruise ship dining room! I love the black and white theme.

I love this, too!

Victoria was Scottish and was a dead ringer for Merida with her bright red hair. She had one of those rather brusque demeanors, friendly but not the overly-sweet accommodating type. I liked her immediately

Neat! I love Merida!

I asked her if Merida was her favorite princess. To my surprise she said no! She said she cringes whenever she hears Merida because she doesn't like hearing her own accent! She said she loves Anna though, who is another redhead!

Haha no way! That's funny! But I like Anna, too, so that's fair.

My favorite butter knives. I use mine at home all the time! You can purchase these in the gift shop on board the ship.

Day 1 Part 4: Halloween Town

I love the air on the ship on the first day of a cruise. Everyone is happy, everything is new and exciting - the adventure was just beginning! There also is really nothing like the first night of a Disney cruise...so much so that I decided to forgo sleep and catch the late showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas. There was so much to look forward to, that I couldn't sleep anyways. The movie was showing pretty late...think around 11pm, but I heard that Jack and Sally have a meet n greet right after and since I've never met them I thought it was the perfect opportunity. Note to all, cruises are a great way to meet characters that usually have long lines or are hard to find. Granted there will be a wait as well, but nothing like what you'd see at the Halloween or Christmas parties, plus you are indoors so you don't have to deal with the elements or the heat.

Everyone else was called quits for the night including Steve, so it was just me that evening. I spent a lot of solo time on this cruise, just because it really was just us two and the in-laws and they did their own thing a lot, while Steve enjoyed his naps. On the other hand I went exploring, character hunting, or spent time in the Rainforest room. I really wanted to make the most of this cruise and it was great we all got to do things we really wanted to do.

I changed and headed out of our room, went up to deck 9 and refilled my water bottle, and got a little coffee to help me stay up for the movie, hehe. The drinks station was only 3 flights up from our room, so convenient. I then headed back down to the atrium to see the action going on over there. Surprisingly, there weren't that many people at all. It was rather...nice!

When it was almost time for the movie I headed over to the Walt Disney Theater. The shops had put out the Halloween merchandise:

It was nothing too exciting although I think they had some clothing that had the Halloween on the High Seas logo.

Indeed right outside of the Walt Disney Theater there was a backdrop for TNBC so Jack and Sally would be there!

The Iron Man head was actually a mug, not a popcorn container. The Oogey Boogey was pretty cool. Maybe I should have gotten one, but oh well. I'm not a die hard TNBC fan but I liked that it was unique.

During the movie, I sat towards the back so that I could make a quick exit once the movie ended, so immediately after the movie ended I ran out and was about the 3rd person in line. Yay!

Jack and Sally were wonderful. Their characterizations were spot on and we had a lovely conversation about how it was going to be my wedding anniversary next week and they thought it was very romantic. They asked if we got married in a cemetery. Also they really liked my dress and Sally asked if I made it, hahaha, funniest thing I've ever heard in my life :rotfl: Jack said Sally was an excellent seamstress and I said I was just about the opposite. I was really happy I got to meet these two together!

It was close to 1am now so I headed back to the room. I loved how completely empty the Atrium was...oh and look, the pumpkins have arrived on the tree! It's officially Halloween Time!

What a fun first day...I hopped and skipped back to my room through Shutters, which is the photo service area on deck 4.

BTW, the boat heading north was fine, I didn't feel that much movement and I know that was a slight concern for us taking a cruise in October. But it had been great so far that day!
I had a really amazing first day, even though I spent a lot of time solo - it was perfect though! If you often hesitate to travel solo, do it with Disney and you won't feel lonely!

Coming up, our first sea day plus an insane Palo Brunch!

The pumpkin tree is so cool! The caretaker story is pretty interesting too. The Firelights are great with their music and really mix it up well, we watched them a few nights on our cruise. Cannot wait to see the Palo brunch spread, we weren't able to fit it in this time :( Great as always so far and we aren't anywhere close to Marvel Day at Sea!

How cool that you got to meet Jack and Sally without waiting in crazy lines! That really is one of the cool benefits of a Disney cruise!

Absolutely! If you love characters, the cruises are perfect.

It looks so cool! Halloween had arrived!

It did! It was so cool to see all the Halloween stuff!

Tuning in for an awesome trip report so far!

Thank you so much for reading!!

I love your trip report so far! :flower1: Thank you for sharing! I'm looking forward to your port reviews.

Thank you!! I love writing about my Disney travels! Thanks for reading!

I missed the caretaker story! But very cool to see the pumpkin tree in person. Yes, the Firelights were awesome! Loved them!!
Palo was amazing...as you soon shall see!!

What a fun first night. I love the beginning of vacation energy. It must be super intense when everyone is all on the same page with that energy! All the Halloween decorations are so cute. I’ve never seen Nightmare Before Christmas...may need to put that on the viewing list for this holiday weekend. Speaking of, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

The beginning of vacation is the best!! There was a definite happy vibe on the ship...but apparently people were early sleepers as the ship was completely empty by 1am. I guess this is not the party cruise! I honestly had never seen TNBC in theaters, I have seen bits and pieces of it on TV, so it was actually a nice treat to be able to focus on the movie.
And thank you! Happy thanksgiving to you too!!
