I really would prefer this option over having a stroller that is bulky and must be checked in. Also, I like having a stroller at all times. Is there any such stroller?
if you gate check it (which is what you do with strollers) you'll have it until you step onto the plane, and right after you step off. No need to pack.
We usually gate check. You can wheel the stroller right down the jetway and leave it there, then pick it up in the jetway when you get off. The only caveat is that we usually have to sign a waiver that the airline is not liable for damage (same with the car seat). On all the airlines we have flown there is no fee to check a carseat or to gate check a stroller (some have size restrictions on the stroller but we just have a good quality umbrella stroller which is no problem)
I always gate check, however, my old Quinny Zapp could fit into a suitcase. However, It was semi pricey and didn't turn very well (but I might have gotten a lemon!). All in all one of my least favorite strollers (and I've owned 6!)
I would gate check my regular stroller. We have brought a Combi Cosmo on flights several times, as well as a Snap and Go, and never had any problems with damage and it was so nice to be able to push DS through the terminal instead of trying to carry him. We regularly gate checked his stroller and car seat for free when he was smaller. Just look up any restrictions before you go; I know American put a policy in place a few years ago where they do not allow you to gate check jogging strollers or strollers over 25(?) pounds.
They do sell stroller bags and double stroller bags, if you wanted to buy one.
We had a big red one from babies r us that I used once to gate check a stroller. But it was actually more hassle for me to try to get the stroller in the bag so I don't use it anymore. Whenever we have gate checked a stroller or car seat, everything looked okay when we got it back. I don't think they throw those items around quite as much as the luggage?
My big concern about gate checking baby gear is when you have a connecting flight and you're waiting at the jet bridge for your stuff and the clock is ticking to make your next flight...
I had a stroller broken once when they opened it after the plane landed. I could still use it but it wouldn't stay closed, they broke the latch. I like having a stroller at all times as well, I own a double and we drive to Disney now, but I used www.magicstrollers.com and loved it so much that I don't take my double anymore! They deliver to and pick up from hotel and the stroller can be pushed with a finger! Go to their site & watch the video! We go for 8 days and its $84 for a double and love it! I tried to buy one like theirs and it was like $800
