Does anyone know if the fresh mozzerella cheese you buy in supermarkets or in most american restaurants as an appetizer is made with pasteurized milk?

I'm newly pregnant and not sure if I am allowed to eat it or not.

Thanks!:goodvibes

Yes you should be fine to consume commercial mozzarella (I know I did!). The concern is generally with cheeses like brie or feta or other softer cheeses like that.

Yes it is. If you look at the ingredients it will say that it is made with pasteurized milk. I have yet to come across fresh mozzerella that has not been made with pasteurized milk. Even the local Italian pork store (who makes their own) has pasteurized fresh mozzerella. Where you need to be extra careful is if you go to a local farm (at least that's what my doctor told me) the fresh cheeses at places like that may not always be made with pasteurized milk. Congratulations!

Thank you!! I looked at the label of one in the market today, but I could not find any info on whether it was pasteurized!

I'm assuming goat cheese is probably a no-no, huh?

I've been reading up on what to stay away from, in terms of foods and herbs, and it's amazing how long the list is!!!

Which does not bother me in the least, except it makes me very paranoid everytime we go to make a meal. I just read that basil can cause miscarriage! I'm a little nervous about going out to a restaurant, not knowing what spices are in everything....

Really the list shouldn't be that long at all. My OB is very open about being extremely cautious and I think I can count on a few fingers the foods I was told to not eat or to eat carefully/in moderation.

Tuna is a food they ask you to consume in moderation. My OB advises avoiding certain things like swordfish, tilefish, shark as they are known to have high levels of mercury.

No soft cheeses like brie, feta or queso blanco/queso fresco

No raw meat or eggs (really a good safe eating policy when not pregnant) or raw seafood/shellfish

No unpasteurized milk/dairy products (in some states it is illegal for "raw" milk/dairy to be sold completely)

Deli meats are controversial..my OB had no issue with them beyond being high sodium..some say no way but those you can heat to steaming if you are worried and then eat them safely (this one was really no impact to me as during both pregnancies lunch meat in any form made me gag/sick)

That's really not a ton of food and I was never ever told no herbs in foods..what herbs are you worried about?

ETA-I was never told I could not eat foods with basil..never. Maybe used in a medicinal way it is unsafe but in general cooking I was never told it was an issue in either pregnancy.

Thank you for settling my worries-I still have a week & a half until my first doctor's appt, so I've been relying alot on the internet for info.

I came across a website that listed cinnamon, basil, tarragon, aloe vera, and black pepper as a uterine stimulant or "may induce miscarriage" & I got quite scared! I"m in my mid 30's and I'm also overweight, so I know I already have risk factors. I've been trying to be very cautious of everything I put in my mouth and trying to stick with all lowfat, whole grains, fruits, veggies, proteins, minimal artificial stuff in the ingredients....

My DH thinks I'm going overboard being so paranoid about all this stuff, but I've been wanting to have a baby for so long, I just do not want to screw things up.

Congratulations on your little-one-to-be!

Fresh mozzarella should be fine, as are almost all foods. Lunch meat, fish like tuna and swordfish, and alcohol should be avoided, but pretty much everything else is OK.

You might enjoy finding a pregnancy board to chat on. The folks on those are usually really up on all of the latest info and it's really fun to talk with others who are expecting, too.
