Background -

Several years ago, my parents went out of town, & I asked them to bring me back some cotton twigs for decoration. They didn't find any, &, it sort of became a joke.

We were getting their mail while they were away, so, the night before they were scheduled to return, I took several bags of cotton balls & "cotton-balled" the inside of their house. We threw cotton balls everywhere!

They loved it & thought it was hilarious.

So, it became a "thing" for us to prank each other house's while we were out of town. On the other occasion my parents were out of town, we rearranged some of their kitchen cabinets & short-sheeted their bed.

However, we have been out of town WAAAY more than they have, so they have had quite a few more opportunities to prank our house.

* They've tp'd the interior of our house.

* They've rearranged cabinets & small pieces of furniture & other knickknacks.

* The week we were gone right before the 4th of July, we came back, & our house had been "4th of July'd" - Mom bought 300 little American flags & tons of red, white, & blue beads, & our whole whole house was red, white, & blue.

* One December, we came back, & Christmas bows were literally everywhere.

* Another December we came home, & tinsel was everywhere.

* Last September, we came home, & found artificial fall leaves everywhere.

It's always something. Once, they arranged all of our younger son's stuffed animals like they'd been having a party.

They also leave chocolate bars on our pillows & $1.00 bill under our pillows.

Plus, they always leave baked goods & fresh orange juice.

So it's basically "tricks & treats"! ;-)

Anyway, they haven't been out of town in forever, & they finally went somewhere this past week.

They return tomorrow, & I NEED ideas for what we can do to their house!

Because we've been out of town more frequently, they've done so much to us that I can't really think of anything unique. LOL!

Right now, my one idea is to take a silly pic of the kids & then print enough copies to go in all their current picture frames.

Anything else?

Thank you!!!

Open up all the picture frames and put a picture of someone famous' face covering all the faces on all the pictures in the house. It would take some time to print faces all approximately the same size, but it seems fun to me. A little creepier because it would still be their bodies.
For a simpler one, just do your picture idea.

If you do not have time for the balloons---take all the clothes from the dresser drawers and move them into kitchen cupboards, moving the plates, etc from the kitchen into the dressers.
You could also swap food from the cupboards and toiletries from the bathroom vanities.

My brother moved all the furniture from our office to the dining room, dining room to the living room, living room to the office once.... Joke was on him we liked the new arrangement.

We also came home early from a beach vacation cut short due to a hurricane. The whole living room was filled with beach chairs and umbrellas, 2 kiddie pools filled with sand, and frozen margaritas on the table.

One of my little tricks is that I like to take people's pictures (framed or not) and turn all of the pictures upside down. Saves you the time of taking a picture and printing it out. Drives people nuts and but I find rather amusing. Lots of other great ideas above. And I love some of the things your parents did!

  • color all of the backs of their faucets with vis-a vis wet erase markers - it will stay there until they go to turn the water off after they wash their hands, then the water will activate the ink and turn their hands all red or green or blue

  • tape small pictures of babies all over the place - you never realize how creepy babies are until there are 100 of them staring at you!

  • turn everything backwards/upside down - pictures, TV's, knick knacks, chairs, etc. make the beds up, upside down pillows at the foot and sheets tucked into the side their heads usually go

  • take out all of the lightbulbs in the lamps and overhead fixtures and leave them on the table with a bow and a welcome home sign

  • unplug everything (that can be unplugged safely, of course!) and leave a pile of all the TV/internet connections in the living room

  • put feathers or small cotton balls on the tops of the ceiling fan blades

Let us know what you come up with! We love pranks in our house!

The eyes were everywhere, in the cabinets, on the cabinets, freezer, light switches, even the water bottle dispenser had huge eyes!

Best prank ever.

My husband bubble wrapped the step from the house down into the garage and then came up with an excuse to send the kids to the garage to retrieve something.
My daughter put saran wrap over all the cubbies at her BFF's house (while pet sitting) we saran wrapped the front of every opening, shelf etc.

I’d be so mad if someone did that to me lol

Maybe something better would be to record a bunch of really random things.

make several bowls of jello and "set" their mail in it. wrap the mail in plastic wrap so the jello doesn't ruin it.

decorate stryofoam to look like a cake as their "treat". make sure your parents try to cut the first piece.

OMG I love it!!! :rotfl2:

- Use dry erase markers to draw mustaches, beards, and horns on all of the pictures in frames.
- Put plastic spiders, bugs etc throughout the house and put fake rubber snakes under their sheets and in the cereal box.
- Cover all the furniture in white sheets and drape cobwebs all around for an abandoned house look.
- Wrap the couch in Saran wrap.
- Wrap the toilets in wrapping paper with a big bow. Put a fake poo on top. Wrap other large items like the TV, pictures, table, etc.
- Put caution tape across all the doorways.
- Take all of the interior door knobs, drawer and cupboard knobs off.
- Cover a new white sheet that you buy in fake blood and swap it for the sheet on their bed.
- Unroll a roll of toilet paper. Melt chocolate in the microwave and mix it with nuts. Put globs of the chocolate nut.ixture all over the toilet paper and let dry. Roll it back up and swap this with their normal toilet paper on the holder.
- Duct tape random things to the ceiling like chairs, kitchen appliances, etc. It requires a lot of duct tape but will eventually stick to non-textured ceilings.
- Fill all the sinks up with water, aquarium rocks, and either real or plastic goldfish.
- Wrap the remote in Saran wrap, place in a Ziploc bag and cover the bag in a bowl with liquid jello. Refrigerate.
- Cover the remote sensor and the computer mouse sensor with a small piece of paper and tape.
- Take the batteries out of everything in the house.
- Replace all the light bulbs with colored ones.

Sorry, no suggestions here...

Oooh!! That would make me so mad!!

Sidenote - My parents actually don't have a DVR... even though we've tried to explain the beauty of DVRs. They still have a VCR player, a separate VCR tape rewinder (so they don't wear out their VCR), & tons of VCR tapes along w/ a DVD player & DVDs.

Anyway... THANK YOU all so much for the wonderful ideas!!

I didn't want to do anything too mean or too difficult/heavy for my parents to undo. So, we decided to go w/ an "Upside Down" theme!

For their "treat," I bought a box of apple fritters from a local bakery & then taped a "Welcome Home" sign to it that said, "We're just 'upside down' without y'all here!"

The box of apple fritters is sitting on the bar in their kitchen which they'll see first.

And, then, randomly, throughout their house, we turned things upside down - pictures in frames, all the cans in the pantry cabinet, various jars in the refrigerator, candles, a stool in the family room, a lightweight end table in the living room, books on shelves, DVDs on the DVD shelves, hanging wreaths & other wall hangings, various knickknacks, etc. They have a lot of "stuff" & a very full house!! My mom has several decorative pillows w/ sayings on them - turned them all upside down! She has a bedroom set up for the grandkids, &, on the set of twin beds in the room, there are stuffed animals propped against the pillows - turned them upside down as well!

I also took individual silly pics of our kids (& dog), printed several copies, & then hung the pics upside down in cabinets, in the shower, under the toilet lids, the lid to the laundry chute, & the lids to the washer & dryer.

We remade their bed w/ the pillows at the foot instead of the head & fixed the sheet so it's now tucked in at the head instead of the foot. And I put a dollar bill under each of their pillows.

Sidenote - That's my dad's thing. When we come home after being out of town, there's a dollar bill under each of our pillows. I'm not sure why.

However, I forgot to bring chocolate to put on their pillows!

As we were turning things upside down, I realized my mom has TONS of pictures frames, &, if I had gone w/ my original idea of replacing all the pics w/ a silly pic of the kids, we'd still be there, & we probably would have spent TONS of money on printer ink!

Our 2 sons really liked the balloon idea too, so, in addition to everything being upside down, we blew up balloons & corralled them all around the back door (the door in which they'll enter the house), so, when they enter, they'll be bombarded w/ balloons.

The kids can't wait 'til they get back home today!

Again, I appreciate all the fun ideas! I'm definitely saving some (like the googly eyes) for the next time!

Well, that's fine, but my parents enjoy it.

And I actually thought about not doing anything & just leaving a nice "welcome home" baked treat. However, I know they're expecting something, & I really think their feelings would be hurt if we hadn't done something fun.

After we cotton balled their house, my mom called me & could hardly talk she was laughing so much & then told me, "We do have fun, don't we?"

I think, if we had not done something "prank-ish," my mom would worry that I hadn't liked/appreciated all the previous fun things they'd done to our house while we were away.

And we do "fun" pranks - nothing mean-spirited or difficult to undo.

Well, if her parents like it, okay. But I'm with you, as we hope to retire in 2 years, we have gotten our house where we don't need anyone to check on it while we are gone. Automatic sprinklers, locking mail box, burglar alarm, no pets.
