How do you use an advent calendar?

Good evening! My son was given an advent calendar and I feel stupid to say I have never had one before. I know you use it to countdown to Christmas, and you open one little window a day, right? But the windows are numbered 1 through 25. So...do I start at door #1 on December 1 and finish up with window 25 on Christmas? Or do I start with window 25 since that is how many days there is to go and then count DOWN to #1? Does it matter? Yes, I am an advent calendar moron.

By the way, I am having a drink of 1/2 beer and 1/2 ginger ale right now and dang it is good. Highly recommend.

Well I don't know about that. I'm from Chicago and that's how we always did it. Also, the prepackaged ones we've gotten usually have the 24th one with an extra large piece of chocolate.

DD is so excited to start opening hers. You start at #1 and go up from there. Some calendars only go to #24 for Christmas Eve. Hope your DS has fun with it.

Thanks for this thread, it reminded me to get out the Advent calander I bought on BF. I had to hide or else Dh would have already started the countdown!

It depends on how your calendar is set up. I have had calenders that are set up to go from 25-1, 1 having the biggest door and I have had calendars that are set up the other way 1-25. The one I have now has all the door equal so I will go from 1-25 because it looks more like a calendar so the 1 represents Dec 1st. etc.
