How do you remove grey adhesive on back of gift cards?

The grey stuff is applied to a clear sticker that is placed over the numbers. Peel off the sticker - but then you are left with sticky residue on the card. I used a bit of Goo Gone to clean that off.

I've always used a coin and just tried to not scrub too hard and scuff up the numbers.

I had really good luck with peeling off the sticker without any residue on my last batch. Last year's batch was really gooey. Maybe they changed the glue?

WD-40 is good at removing stickies if goo gone is unavailable

Not sure exactly how this works - since I don't have a criminal mind (haha), but I saw a news segment which warned that some low-lifes will
go into a store;
take some cards; (evidently, the unloaded cards won't trigger any theft alarms)
peel off the stickers;
write the numbers down;
apply a new sticker and
put the card back on the shelf.

They periodically check the status of the card number online and if someone has bought and loaded the it, the low-lifes already have the card number and security number to go online, register the card and use the balance.
Evidently, you can buy little sticky type tape that looks like the original tape.

Must have some pretty uninterested staff to give them enough time/room/inattention to go through all of that while still in the store. Loss Control in that case definitely deserves to lose their jobs.

I tried using goo-gone but it took off more of the numbers. I tried white vinegar but that didn't help much either.
