Help with Memorial Day decision

Our early May trip needs to be changed
We are now looking at Memorial Day time frame but I'm worried about the crowds. I'd appreciate any information you all could offer. We have traveled often in August and are hoping not to do that again, so we are used to the heat... TIA!

My neighbors went last year the Tuesday or Wed before Memorial Day through the day after Memorial Day. While the weekend itself might have been crowded, the days before and after were pretty decent. Shoulder season-y.
