:scared1:
i just confirmed that DD10 does have pinworms. she is going absolutely crazy from the itch. any suggestions on anything to give her some relief until i can find her a doctor? she is in the bathroom crying and begging me to do something :sad1: i feel horrible. and to top it off she doesn't have a doctor right now. i lost my job (& health insurance) in august and she now has medicaid. but her old doc doesn't accept medicaid and i didn't find a new one yet.:guilty:
so.....anybody have any tips to at least reduce some of her misery to help her get through the night?

great....everybody else is sleeping!
wake up and send me some advice!!!!
i'm tempted to go to the e.r., but i know it's not an emergency so i won't.

Hey, I Googled it for you. It appears the over the counter medication works just as well as prescription, so maybe you won't even have to go to the doctor. Do a Google search for more information, as it appears pinworms are extremely contagious and your whole family may already have them. :scared1: I hope your DD feels better soon. Poor kid.

From a Google Search:
Reese's Pinworm Medicine is a very common and very effective OTC pinworm treatment. If prescription medications aren't your thing, or they're too expensive, or you don't have insurance, there are plenty of over-the-counter pinworm medications available that are just as effective as their prescription cousins. The important thing is to treat each member of the family with pinworm medicine to ensure there isn't an recurring infections caused by a second, third, or fourth family member

thanks for that link. and while googling i saw pin-x, which is over the counter. i'm gonna go get some now. hope it works! my other dd had this problem a few years ago and she was treated with a prescription med. :confused3

well i went to the 24 hour walmart and walgreens and BOTH stores were out of the otc stuff. dd fell asleep before i left and is still sleeping so i think she's fine for a few more hours. then i'm going to call her ped and see if she'll call in the script. i bet she will. since the office isn't open on saturday they can't try to get me to go in! (she doesn't know she's not our doctor anymore;))
this just grosses me out. and we sleep together AND she has a bad habit of using my bath towel!!!! :scared1:
NOBODY is sneaking under my covers with a flashlight and/or tape while i'm sleeping so i'll just play it safe and treat everybody in the house. i already have the first load of laundry in......this is like that lice thread, so much cleaning and laundry to do now. i'm just glad we don't have to pick THESE out like lice/nits!!!!

My daughter has had it twice. You need to give her a medication to kill the worms. You take one pill one day and the next pill one week later. They usually hatch in the PM ( i think i read that). The worms are not dangerous to have them, but they are irritating. Once she takes the medication, she should not be itchy by the next day. I usually give bendryl to stop the itching until i can get the script.
Make sure you wash all bedding in hot water and all underwear. Disinfect countertops, etc.
Although my oldest daughter didn't have any, the doctor prescribed the med for her too.

:scared1: WHERE do they hatch?? On your skin?

Gross out ahead....when DD had pinworms a few years ago they gave us the script, but I had an extra Dr. ordered task (DD was afraid/embarassed and went almost a week without saying anything to us :sad2:-so they were bad!). DD would lay across my lap and with a q-tip and some K-Y I had to "catch and remove" as many of those little buggers that I could. we had to do that for several nights since that is when they are most active.

Still gives me the Heebie-jeebies!

From Wikipedia:
Life Cycle
After mating, the females migrate from the cecum to the rectum, where they emerge from the anus and lay eggs on the skin around the anus.[11] After the eggs have been ingested, the larvae develop to adults in the intestine.[11] The entire life cycle is complete within 4 to 6 weeks, with 30 days being the best estimate.

Reproduction

Pinworms mate by traumatic insemination. After mating, the male dies. The female migrates to the anus and emerges, usually during the night, to deposit about 10,000 to 20,000 eggs in the perianal area (around the anus). She then secretes a substance which causes a very strong itching sensation, inciting the host to scratch the area and thus transfer some of the eggs to the fingers. Eggs can also be transferred to cloth, toys, and the bathtub. Once ingested orally, the larvae hatch in the small intestine, specifically the duodenum, and migrate back to the large intestine where they mature. Maturity is reached in 30–45 days. The eggs can survive for 2 to 3 weeks on their own outside of the human body. In some cases, the larvae will hatch in the peri-anal area and travel back inside the anus, up the rectum, and back into the intestines where they mature.[15]

Walgreens sells an OTC remedy that is effective. No need to go to the doctor if you have been able to confirm pinworms.

Location in the store can be iffy, but you can ask someone in the pharmacy and they will be happy to help you located it.

We have some in our cabinet and I have used it on my kiddos.

i had a teacher who apparantly caught a very bad case when he was studying in peru (this was back in the late 60's) and the 'native' way (very remote area) of ridding yourself was to fast for several days and then sit in a tub of water mixed with milk. apparantly by fasting you starve them and then when you sit in the milk mixture it attracts them to come out and feed:eek:

this is so gross!!!!!!
dd is still sleeping, she was up sooo late last night. plus i gave her benadryl really late.
and i can't get the awful image of her anus and a bunch of worms around it (and coming out:eek:), out of my head!!!! ewwww
anyways, i called her ped this morning and i was right, she called in the script and gave me a few tips over the phone. only thing i don't like is that she doesn't want to treat the whole house. i'm gonna get the otc stuff for the rest of us, i guess. my other kids (14, 16, and 18) would NEVER let me check them at night!!!!!!

I have done this as well with DD. Pinworms are a you-know-what to get rid of.

I think I can help you out. This is without doubt the nastiest thing I have ever seen on the disboards, ew, ew, ew!!

:thumbsup2 yea---thats what was in my head but my stomach was turning to much to get the words out!!

Go to the pharmacy and ask them for over the counter pin worm medicine. I did this at Wal-mart and they had it behind the desk, not out on the shelf. It seemed to work.

Also, have her take a shower and wash, wash, wash. She can get rid of some of them that way. Icky, but she will be ok.

:grouphug:
My Dr. says they do no harm, are just annoying.

ok color me ignorant, I've heard of pinworms but what causes it?

I hope your DD gets some relief and no one else gets it, sounds like torture
