It is 'very' common. I, too, just out of the blue several years ago started getting it only at Disney! :confused3 It goes away as soon as I get home. I think, from googling it, that it is not harmful at all. Try 'not' to rub it at all - as with a wash cloth while bathing, etc. If you don't irritate it, it won't really bother you much - at least mine didn't. Think it is from so much walking, plus the heat.

It makes you feel like you have some terrible disease as it 'looks' bad, but try not to worry - nothing to harm you or anyone else. I know several people that seem to get it - nothing to do with weight either - as that was not my problem and I have seen all 'sizes' and 'ages' get it.

I did put lotion on it often and it did seem to soothe.

Take care, sorry, as I know how you feel. Just enjoy your trip! pixiedust:

Try an over the counter hydrocortizone cream. Also, ice the area before bed. If you have a fridge with a freezer, try wetting a couple of wash cloths and freezing them while you are out at the park. When you get back, place the wash cloths on the affected area.

I believe this rash is attributed to the sun reflecting on the payment, so maybe cover up the legs with a skirt, maxi, or longer pants if you brought them?

Keep suntan lotion on at all times. I get it every time we go and it is ok if I remember to put lotion on before we get to the parks. If I forget just one time the rash gets worse. Someone said there are tiny bits of glass in the ashpalt which causes a reflection and thus causes the rash from a combination of sun and heat. It will go away after you are home.

Golfer's Vasculitis. Cool showers and baths can help. Other than that, time and rest.

DM had this rash a few days ago (coincidentally, at EPCOT). She said that placing cold wash cloths over her legs helped to alleviate the burning and that the rash cleared up after a few days off her feet.

I had that once
Got it at Epcot
Bought athletic tape at the gift shop and wrapped the affected skin
Helped a lot
So did cortisone cream
Hang in there!

Thanks everyone! I've secured a bucket of ice and going to look for hydrocortisone at pop century store. Going to take it easy tonight- thanks again- I'll let you know how it fairs over the week

I had no clue others got this at Disney! Last year my DD (9) developed a rash only on her legs. It hurt and bothered her most of the trip. So this makes sense and I am kind of glad she isn't the only one that has ever gotten it. It was so strange! She got it on the 2nd day and it had cleared up by the 5th day. Hopefully yours will clear up soon!

I get it sporadically at Disney. It seems to get worse if I stand in one spot too long especially in the sun. I did a bit of reading up and starting a couple of weeks before our trip and while we are there I take an Ester-C and Benadryl each day. It has to be Ester-C and not just vitamin C. I figured it doesn't hurt and if nothing else might protect from a cold or two while there. I have still gotten it a couple of times since then but MUCH less severe.

I have never had it before or heard of this rash until now. What do you all think would be the cause of this in the parks that it happens frequently to people? I am very curious.

My sister got a bad case last year. It started above her ankles and spread upward about 4 - 5 inches. We researched it one night because she was anxious to get rid of it!

It's commonly known as Golfer's Vasculitis, as is caused by a combination of heat (not direct sun) and long periods of walking or standing. It's actually an internal problem (as opposed to a skin condition), so topical meds such as cortisone are not likely to help. It can be painful for some, but my sister said hers didn't itch or hurt at all. It just looked awful. The most common recommendations are to keep the feet and legs elevated as much as possible. Also apply cold compresses or ice packs to reduce the swelling and redness. The Florida heat and the amount of walking required provide the exact conditions that usually cause it, which is why it's also known in some circles as "Disney Rash." My sister's legs finally looked better after a couple of days back at her desk job in an air-conditioned building.

My DD and I get this every time we go to WDW. The rash usually appears a couple of days after we have arrived. For us, it seems to be located mainly around the joints, ankles, knees and sometimes elbows. I also get it on my forearms. It is very itchy but disappears once we return home.

Hi, we are here until saturday, and last nite as we were waiting for the tram my left ankle felt like it was bit up. I was shocked to find a rash there AND on my right ankle too!!! Today i didnt wear socks and it didnt get worse. One more day of parks for us, so i hope it doesnt get worse!!!

Soooooo glad to hear how common it is.

Karen

Never seen or heard of this either! I'll consider this info a new tool in my bag of WDW tricks in case it ever comes up. Hope you are better soon OP!

Take a shower and cool off/dry off without underwear for the night. Get Gold Bond Medicated Powder and liberally apply to all areas. Sleep without underwear for the night. Wake up in the morning with a happy face. It saved our vacation!!!!

This is a cure. It saved our vacation twice. The idea is to reduce moisture and let the medicated powder do its work.

I get this too...I think I have figured out how I get it.....if it rains and I walk with my flip flops through the puddles, the water splashes on my legs...I get it. I always bring hydrocortisone cream with me, that's the only thing that helps it go away. It looks pretty nasty for a couple days though. Mine never hurts, just itches.

I have been a victim of Disney rash!! It is not a rash and does not itch. Jus burns when the heat hits it. The first time I got it I freaked out and went to a walk-in clinic. the doctor said not to stand on hot pavement. Yea, sure!! It has to do with the heat and circulation. I wear crew socks and then use broad spectrum sunscreen on the part of my legs that are exposed to the sun. I use LOTS of sunscreen from the knees down, especially on my calves. I also reapply during the day. I have not been bothered since I started doing this. It seems that when this topic comes up from time to time that there are many forms of Disney rash. Hope you feel better!!!

Well, there are several types of Disney rash it would seem. Vasculitis can't not be treated. It is a circulatory issue. I used to get it....come to find out my b/p meds predisposed me to it. Huge red blotches on my lower legs, mostly on the backs from ankle up my calf. Those that are 'female, forty+, fair, and fat(I use that term only because it is an F word...I'm not fat but could stand to lose a bit)' are more susceptible to it. The only way to get rid of it is to get off your feet, in cooler weather. Mine goes away about 3 days after returning home! It is only mildly painful...more of a throbbing. But it doesn't itch, and it doesn't react to any meds, creams or powders.
