I need help ASAP! We have a 14 y.o. boy (very important to us) who is being confirmed soon. We want to make a good decision regarding a gift. First, it's hard enough for me to figure out what to give a 14 y.o. boy under any circumstances. Second, we are not Catholic, so I have no clue what constitutes a traditional confirmation gift. I'd like to stay within the bounds of a traditional gift, or at least not too far afield.

PLEASE give me suggestions/ideas as I have NOTHING and need to send the gift soon. I know it's been hard to post, so THANKS to anyone who offers ideas. :)

I can't ask his parents, as I have to resort to that strategy much too aften as it is.

I would either just give money in a nice Confirmation card or find out what name he took and get a prayer card of that person or medal of that person and include a small gift card for him to a food place or ice cream place.

Ok I am a sponsor now for my nephew (Methodist) and I totally agree that 14 year old boys are hard enough to buy for without it being a religious occasion. I was going to give money but that didn't seem quite appropriate so I added a cross in my pocket (very small, got it at the Hallmark store)...that way I figure there is at least some religious signifigance attached to the occasion aside from money.

Honestly? I would probably give a rosary and a card with cash.

Reason being rosaries are "hot items" as jewelry for rappers. Now I know it is something trendy but I would not be able to pass that up as a gift for a guy.

Cash. I'm sure he got some religious items such a crosses/medals at his Baptism and Communion already.

I am doing cash for my cousin, figured she alread has a rosary.

We're giving our niece a pretty key ring, representing the Trinity, and cash. I got it from The Catholic Company. I'm not Catholic, DH is lapsed and no help so I googled "confirmation gift". I even found a 15% off promo code.

I know kids LOVE getting money, but it seems impersonal to me so I like to include a little something I gave some thought to. Our neice is taking her driving test soon and is very excited, so I thought the key ring would be an acknowledgment of both.

Cash is common but so is a Saint medal in their name (if it is a saint name) or the name of the Saint they "took" (although that is not what they do in our parish the kids do identify a saint and write a paper on them).

Other options
-Rosary
-Bible
-Dog tag style religious necklace (see website below as there are a few types there)

A crucifix might be nice but odds are if they are making their confirmation they long since have one (my boys each got a crucifix for their rooms from my parents at their baptism..a lot of people I know give a crucifix at baptism).

This website might offer up some ideas on options you can find locally:

YEs, I would say these are the most "traditional" confirmation gifts.

Good luck.

Cash. By now he certainly has multiple rosaries, crosses, Bibles and medals.

Its my experience that boys that age LOVE cash.

I would go with cash in a nice card.

I work with Confirmation students.

My favorite publisher for Catholic teen items is St Marys Press. I especially like their Catholic Youth Bible and their Catholic Youth Prayer book for teens (green leather bound book). You can see these on their website. I just ordered some and ordered them through Amazon to get a better price.

Kids in our parish lead prayer at youth meetings and use these as resouces to help them.

I keep these items in stock in my office available for purchase for that last minute gift.

You may have a church or shrine or Catholic gift store nearby with items such as these for sale.

Good luck! I am sure the recipient would also appreciate a nice card and $$ too!

I know here our cathedral has a nice gift store..OP you might look up your local Catholic cathedral and inquire if they have a gift shop..you could go there and I am sure the folks working there could also guide you to some nice options.

Exactly. He has received sacraments of baptism and communion already, so he probably has already been gifted all this. My nephew is getting confirmed in a couple of weeks several states away. I am sending a card and check.
