My DH has ignored all my pleas to re-do the bathroom for the last 10 years.
Now, we have a situation where tiles are falling out, and the wall behind the tiles is crumbling. The last time this bathroom was renovated was
1967. HELP! Has anyone done "Bath Fitter". Were you happy about it?

Thank You For ANY Help!

I haven't but my impression was that it couldn't be "too" bad underneath. It sounds like you are way too far gone and need some serious repair. I could be wrong though.

We have had both our bathrooms done by bath fitters. It is expensive but last a long time. We probably could have got it tiled for what we paid but my sister got hers retiled and it looks just as bad after a few years with grout and tiles being yucky. Mine was done almost 10 years and looks like brand new. I love the ceiling done as well. No paint peeling up there from the shower steam.

They will come in and give you a free estimate and tell you if you need to replace drywall. My husband did this in one bathrooms since we wanted to remove the bulkhead to make the shower head taller. No drywall up there after we removed the bulk head. But they will do the work as well you would have to pay extra.

Very happy with both results. I did cover the tub with a new one and happy I did because if you are going for white the tub will not match the brightness of the walls. I have the one that looks like smaller tiles on the wall so it is not smooth , plus no caulking down the two side because they are the only company that bends it all in one piece into the tub area. Loved losing the soap dish in the middle of the wall too. Now I have a three shelf corner one.

We had our bathroom done almost 3 years ago and it still looks great. Our previous shower had some loose tiles, so we paid extra to have it ripped out. There was no mold or water damage underneath, so they were able to put the new materials in and have it done in one day. I was looking for a quick and fairly inexpensive way to replace the shower before water started seeping into the loose tiles. We ended up paying around $6000 and I think it was worth it.

I also got a quote for the kids' bathroom, which is a tub/shower combo. We will probably have it done next summer. The tile in there is very well-sealed. Nothing is loose or broken so the demolition won't be required. The quote was under $4000.

The Bath Fitter shower is really easy to clean. There's no grout to scrub. We don't get mold. If soap scum builds up, I spray it with a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner and either wipe it or just rinse it away. I occasionally scrub the floor when crud builds up. Otherwise, it's easy. I would recommend it if you're looking for a quick solution.

My brother and sister in law looked into it and it was way more expensive then an actual renovation from a local contractor. They went with the traditional renovation and it is gorgeous.

Thanks for your replies. We only have one bathroom. I'm the type who absolutely HAS to have a shower before going to work. My DH is retired, and he doesn't need the shower quite as much as me. So ...... as long as we now
have to get this fixed, I have the idea to actually get the work done when I am at my SOLO Disney World adventure in early December. My DH can oversee the work that is being done, and I will come back home to a new Bathroom! We have got to get busy and schedule some of the free estimates.

I will probably choose Bath Fitter, but we want to check a couple of more free estimates from other companies. I am sick of trying to wash all that very old grout!!

We did it last year, just for our tub and shower area. We're very pleased with the product itself and the guys were very nice.

The only thing that disappoints me is that the guy pulled out some of the tiles and did a "mold job" on the wall underneath (these condos are 40+ years old, so I wasn't surprised that there is mold under there). Now, a year later, all of the silicone seal between the tub and wall is completely black with mold again, only in the area where he did the mold job, and the mold is on the underside of the silicone, so I can't clean it :headache: And I'm horribly allergic to mold as it is...

Oh, and if you just want a tension-style shower curtain rod...they charged us $85 for the exact same one we could have purchased at Home Depot for $10.

See, this is what discourages me from using Bath Fitter. I was so tempted, I moved into a 40-year-old condo last year, and the shower is ridiculously hard to clean and I'm keeping shampoo, etc, in one of those tension rod/basket things that's rusting. The bath fitter overlays look soooooo easy to clean, no grout, no mildew, built in shelves....

But I'm so afraid the mildew will keep growing underneath, or that the seal won't be good and water will get under there and grow even more mildew, or there'll be a slow leak that'll do damage and I'll get fined....

Sounds like it should have been stripped down and redo the whole drywall because if I found a patch my guess would be there was more growing somewhere. My brother had to do that because he had a rotten window. Sorry to hear your having problems because that should happen. Did you ask them to come back and check it out .

Our curtain rod was free , so that must be place to place. Now they won't let you buy new taps or they won't warrenty the work because if you buy cheap taps and they leak they are not responsible.

They are always having sales too , we got our ceiling panel for free when we did the first one.

You don't have to use Bath Fitter to get the type of product you want.

Diamond Tub & Shower has really nice molded all in one units and I'd imagine there are other manufacturers too.

I would contact a distributor in your area and ask them to recommend a couple of contractors that use the product you're interested in and get bids from them. I prefer to use a local contractor - I feel that they do more to make sure you're happy.

In the past, I found out about the clear silicone the hard way, also. I did some small fix-it jobs in the shower with the clear silicone. I even put up two plastic hooks for the shower caps. Yup - they turned black - and the mold was underneath the silicone, so I could not clean it. Live and Learn.

Way more expensive. We had our tub area gutted, pulled out the old cast iron tub, total tear down of walls, new plumbing to the tub area and then of course all new drywall, new tub, new walls (same thing bathfitter would use) and the cost was well under what another poster said she paid for hers. These guys even had to cut the old tub in half to get it out and did an awesome job.

Got a quote from them last year to overhaul our two full baths. They were much more expensive than having the local contractor do them.

We had Re-Bath come into our home a couple years ago and give us an estimate. Holy smokes!!! We held off. DH searched the internet far and wide to find a similar product so that he could do the remodel himself.

It took a while, but we found the Onyx Collection. LOVE IT!!!. We had it installed this past spring and we are totally satisfied. So satisfied, that this coming spring we are redoing our master bath and having the same product installed there also.

Whatever you decide on, solid walls are sooo nice and easy to keep clean. It is actually my favorite room to clean:thumbsup2

Here is a link to the Onyx Collection if you would like to check them out http://www.onyxcollection.com/
