The Frndly TV app is a very good app. It gets raved about in the by dozens of people in the various Hallmark movies online groups. For 6.99 one gets all three Hallmark Channels plus Great American Family, Lifetime TV and UPtv. It's worth paying the extra $1 for the "Classic" tier and then one gets the DVR service and can watch the movies you've recorded at a later time, instead of having to watch them live. Sometime after Christmas one can cancel their membership, so you've only subscribed for a couple months.

I didn't do a trial, but I did pay for it until YouTubeTV picked up Hallmark. It is a great app, I completely agree. I had the dvr. I loved it.

Ugh! I remember watching these on ION. That was the last year I posted their movies to this thread as the movies were so bad.

I'm kinda shocked they did this many old movies and from such a terrible at holiday movies network but it means more recording space won't be used on my DVR I guess so that's a plus.

Also apologies in advance if this has been mentioned beyond the last few pages but if you have Netflix they got multiple Hallmark Christmas movies within the last week or so. I want to say 6,7, or 8 something like that are now viewable on Netflix. They are more recent movies though.

I kind of feel like movie-makers can't win. I hear people complain on other threads about remakes - saying writers need to come up with new stuff. But then here we are, complaining that new stuff is too complicated and not as good as old stuff.

I agree with both of y'all.

For me I find the vibe and feel to the 2016 and before movies and going back into the 90s and early 2000s is what made me enjoy them more overall. Hallmark was a bit more IRL than today. I think expectations are different now but that also has led to feeling like each movie needs to have enough stuff to keep people's attention and they also interject IRL stuff but with more rose glasses to it. Those then feel tired because the similar plot points are then treated so similarly you might walk away cozy feeling but bored too.

An example I can think of is Our Christmas Journey (2021) primarily about Holly Robinson Peete's character learning to let her autistic son stand on his own. Overall I enjoyed the movie and felt while the subject matter is fresher especially as in recent years that aspect of diversity of showing disabilities has really amped up ,the way they handled it felt too "neat bow" style in the end. And then they had last year's A World Record Christmas which I liked overall but then felt a lot like Our Christmas Journey. While the autism was handled differently with Our Christmas Journey being about letting go of the strict reigns and A World Record Christmas being about achieving a dream despite the disability it still felt like we were not getting a more real raw feeling to the movies and the movies ended up feeling less sincere when put against each other at least to me.

To me that's why they might be struggling in how people feel as the years go on because the movies blur too much together without having enough stand apart. Also the fact that they want soooo many movies each year doesn't help, the quality will suffer the more you have to churn out in such a short time frame.

Yes, I was hesitant to watch My Sweet Austrian Holiday as I thought it was going to be a carbon copy of Love, Romance & Chocolate but without with Lacey Chabert and I'd be feeling the whole time, "Where is Lacey?"

Then PrincessShmoo said it's basically the same storyline as Christmas By Starlight. And it is. Only the family restaurant has been changed to a family chocolate shop and the locale is loosely changed to Austria. But, it is the same exact plot.

Good, if one wants feel good, not weird surprises in one's Christmas movie watching. But, at the same time, it really does leave one hungry for something more, or deeper, or different. (All three if possible.)

And I'd much rather have less movies, yet more quality stories in the movies they do. I'd rather give up the glitz of the fancy sets, lighting, costumes and props for paying for better, more thoughtful stories like the older Hallmark movies everyone is talking about.

Some of the new movies geared toward younger audiences seem a bit different. Although, I'm not really sure I'm interested in some of those. I'm sure Hallmark finds it challenging to find movies to appeal to all their demographics.

The Hallmark+ Channel on YouTube has uploaded an official free sneak peak of their Episode 1 of their Finding Mr. Christmas series showing only on Hallmark+. They are hoping viewers will watch and then sign up for Hallmark+ to watch the rest of the series.

Great point indeed about too many movies in not much time. I just don't understand (I adnit to not drinking coffee, if that matters which I highly doubt it does) how one character causing another to spill coffee is the new way to meet. It also seems as though more often than not the female character is called home unexpectedly to her very quaint hometown where an old friend/boyfriend lives. Before that happens, often tbe actress breaks up with her big city boyfriend or doesn't get an expected work promotion.

Lol, I have noticed less of an actress for example having fallen in love with a small town man almost ending things because she spots him with his sister and automatically believes the two are together.

I respect writing in general is not easy! Much appreciation to Hallmark and others for movies that touch people around the world. By my faith, I believe God used this thread to bring us together for which I sure am blessed. Here's to some enjoyable movies this weekend to watch for each of us

@elgerber may know better that me. But, I think their idea of a "DVR" is just that once you "record" the movie, you have a list of your movies you can choose from to watch later at any time. Everything stays on their cloud servers until you want to watch something. The only movie that is transferred to your device's screen is the one you are currently watching.

That's how (paid) YouTubeTV works. They tell me I have unlimited DVR recordings. But, it's stuff they are recording anyway on their huge data bank. So, basically I just am able to have access to what they already have stored elsewhere. It's probably more in depth than that explanation. But, that's basically how it seems to work on our side.

Lifetime starts their Christmas movies next Friday at 8am ET, with new movies Sat & Sun nights. Hallmark & Great American Family and UPtv will repeat all the movies from the past few weeks, plus have the new ones for next weekend. So, there will be lots to "record" starting next weekend.

Thank you as always Imzadi. I did sign up and saw the record option on some movies. I "added on" for free for 7 days Hallmark and Pure Flix. Should I choose to subscribe for one month for $7.99 would those two add-ons be extra costs? I did a free trial of Pure Flix months ago which I really enjoyed. That was how I discovered the smaller family show Shadrach that I am hoping will have a Season 2. I also am not able to pay an extra $7.99. My other question, and I will be calling FRNDLY by Tuesday when I cancel the free trial, is when I cancel the free trial do I also need to separately somehow cancel the two add ons? I appreciate so very much all of you always and your kind help, too. I will share how FRNDLY works on my Kindle later or tomorrow. I am hoping the display won't go horizontal!

This is correct. The dvr is cloud based so anywhere you access Frndly you can watch recorded movies.

It also seems as though more often than not the female character is called home unexpectedly to her very quaint hometown where an old friend/boyfriend lives. Before that happens, often tbe actress breaks up with her big city boyfriend or doesn't get an expected work promotion.

Partly, I think it's about comfort - that deep down, most people like the predictability. They like knowing the good guy will end up with the girl, and the simple life will win.

She was a single mom, with a “Bro” ex, and they were being evicted right before Christmas and she lost her job, and the ex filed for custody of the kids. She did a good deed which eventually led her to a new guy and lost family. That premise would not be made today. Her situation was too precarious. The dilemmas in today’s movies are much less about physical safety. The audience is more diverse and affluent, and not comfortable with the the leads dealing with that level of poverty. This isn’t a complaint, but Hallmark has become savvier about attracting an audience and it shows. Also, the ladies’ coats were not designer

I just watched a somewhat oldie from 2011. It's one of my favorite Lifetime movies, A Christmas Kiss. Definitely from a simpler time and sparked a couple sequels like it that I didn't think had quite the charm. Lifetime realized that too as they knew churning more out wasn't going to make them better.

Was it The Christmas Secret (2014) ? If so I loved that movie! A good example of what I was thinking of the tonal shift.

I'm glad you mentioned how a few of you picked up on the similar plots, I have My Sweet Austrian Holiday recorded, may hold off on that one to watch later then.

I agree with you about number of movies, you want them to have a variety to fill up the holiday season but there is such as thing as too many and it's starting to really show now that they've been pushing that 40 to 40+ per holiday season number our attention spans for the similar plots are lessening (at least here on the thread that is lol).

I am thinking of the first movie of two that take place in Wilsonville. The second movie is two actresses search for one of their missing sisters. It turns out that they are sisters. The first movie was a single mom and her two young children.
I believe the mom in the beginning did lose her job at a diner but got employed at a bakery later on. Sadly, her ex-husband chose not healthy/positive ways to keep a relationship with his children. I remember he tries to pick them up from their daycare but is thankfully prevented from doing so.

Thank you Imzadi for A Christmas Kiss link. I will check that out. I did watch Christmas Reservations last night via FRNDLY. It took me forever to figure out that when the picture would freeze the solution was to click onto "Home," and then "Continue watching." I had to do this a number of times but ultimately saw the entire movie. It has Melissa Joan Hart and Michael Gross in it so a different kind of casting. The main actor was also new to me, Ricardo Chavira. A simpler story that was enjoyable. I loved Teddy the reindeer dog
