Half the Calories, All the Fun - A "Healthier" Food-Focused Trip Report (12/2-12/13) update 2/3

We wanted to see the gingerbread houses on the monorail loop, but it just never worked out. Oh well, next time!
That tree at the Grand Floridian looks fabulous!
Looking forward to seeing where you ate dinner...

The gingerbread houses are worth seeing. I love all the grand trees in the Deluxe resorts. The Grand Floridian tree is themed to the 12 days of Christmas. It is stunning!

I hear you about the monorail. I was there early December and I never heard so many sick/coughing people in my life! Plus the monorail stinks, ugh! 😩
The flatbread does look yummy!
I agree on the gingerbread house at CR I liked it much better than the last few years and GF was a madhouse when we were there! Some lady was very rude to Susan saying she was in her way for her picture she was taking! Not cool 🥹

I think my trip overlapped with yours. When we first arrived I was actually happy that I didn't hear a lot of coughing but as the week went on it got really bad. I noticed it was mostly adult men. My DH says that's cuz the kids and their moms already caught everything and it was now the dads' turn.

The flatbread was yummy and secretly I'm glad we "didn't know" it wasn't healthy until after we ordered it, lol. I miss pizza....
I swear that wasn't me being rude to Susan..I was only on the upper level, :D. Seriously though, some people just make me shake my head...luckily even with the crowds we didn't run into rudeness much at all.

If it were me, my must do meal would probably be a No Way Jose Sundae or a Ghiardelli's Sundae. Good calcium in them, so yes, I've eaten one of those for each of my meals (not in the same day). Can you tell that ice cream is my food weakness?

We love the No Way Jose Sundae! And, dangerously enough, there is a new ice cream stand a short drive from our house that has a chocolate peanut butter sundae that rivals it. The temptation is real. I like the calcium angle...We've never tried a Ghiradelli sundae, we always end up at Gideon's for cake when in Disney Springs. Our next trip though we've decided to expand our horizons and try some new desserts, perhaps we'll give Ghiradelli a try. Any recommendations?

Our Splurge Dinner
There is one meal that we just weren’t willing to skip on our health conscious journey…’Ohana. We just love this restaurant. Initially when making ADRs, we decided this would be our one “splurge” meal (we ended adding one more towards the end of the trip, but more on that later).

We drove over from the Epcot parking lot and checked in promptly for our reservation. We waited probably about 10-15 minutes to be seated. Our server introduced himeslf and brought us the pineapple coconut bread to start.

AD_4nXdMaA7oSYaXQ7OUTV0POizUxPuppa6EQypvcKZStzik4BnUfvJ3CTu1yxQatkaRNGkOFLAhvIp0I1z2Xtnnvl1kmiinZHWBey0m1DeotlMFV-l4GnUB_NQ5-0K8ttqBMYqpWfP9

We actually showed great restraint and only each had one quarter of it, not so much to be healthy but rather to save room in our bellies that have a lot less capacity these days. We also enjoyed the salad:

AD_4nXeexpvXRih5pvnHWtArIAOZJpHiLYVeWcWnunfxhkScg7LkrdjWs3Ha1W9BPAaCg-H-z0OCO5FICb-rVyP8W9nCaQLzEq4ARmEAicq7qjd-zYkWVX9XoMNm-ki2khlzHDN2INSzeQ

This is a pretty basic mixed greens salad but the vegetables are always fresh and the citrus dressing is quite good.

Next up our server brought the “appetizers/sides”: honey coriander chicken wings, pork dumplings tossed in garlic-chili sauce, ‘Ohana Noodles with Mirin-Teriyaki, Stir-fried Vegetables.

AD_4nXfjXYX64RBary2e8EFC8hdc7y1ilYLU9SIo3bdq1XRqf1WgerMDn9FjDo_WQbOgodT87WMDGPE2XOZu_NYZRc-fcVtTPWoFgHraW2lnbBFbE2F1UqD1DV1ArP9TJjrkoSHqEp_FgQ

This is our favorite part of the meal (besides dessert). This time however, it wasn’t warm enough. Everything had its usual delicious flavor but was basically room temperature, especially the noodles and pot stickers which ended up a little soggy. The chicken wings were the best thing in the skillet. They were sweet, sticky and cooked to perfection. We did ask for a refill and the second skillet came out much hotter. The noodles were way better in the second round. The potstickers were better too but still a little soggy.

Our server brought out the chicken thighs. They now have a Guava-Pineapple Glaze, instead of chimichurri sauce.

AD_4nXdNyO0Q6j1LViNGW3eUldNQQ_8VBPx-cFQ5dGOaPHZpeuP39PXqRFyq0KHJbAXXIYRRHw4IclpHpUaOKIMOOKQNbyZfajY8pByae4YnTslytYYAixPcPG5-Eg7yzg00gRUQc4SwMA

The chicken thighs were well cooked, juicy and flavorful. We both liked the sweet & sour type glaze but I prefer the chimichurri sauce.

My DH likes his meat well-done so he asked for his Black Pepper-Mirin-Teriyaki Beef to be cooked that way. Our server gladly brought him out his own well done skillet.

AD_4nXepRLVqW1R7AVnm4q1f3hSw9ss-Y8jP04DIb1MYbKPmtMjr765PTlSl0rzvvg4K9Kd33TSE3KmQk1KfpFXAlgpovtXuF2xqosLZCR8eZcBT3sqGiYq7DpPAdJ_Rs8KCHq13Jh505Q

Here is mine:

AD_4nXfYLUs5WIsQc4VnfXXKEo3KyPM3745oQ5sza2L4UeKAwhjAn0t545gDyRX5AUO5Lro1H2ZYSEXqgbkh6SHJzlJk9vO1SEavqph8VaNa5CHLZ3wukOOV8nvn7SzOQTy1f8LxY-bVhw

We find the teriyaki beef to be the most inconsistent part of the meal. It is always hit or miss regarding the quality of the meat. Sometimes it is so tender we can cut it with a butter knife, other times it’s so chewy we can’t eat it. This time we lucked out and both of us had tender, flavorful meat cooked exactly as we like it.

Our server also brought the peel n eat shrimp. DH doesn’t usually eat shrimp so I had these all to myself. I’m not crazy about peeling my own shrimp (messy fingers bug me) but these are so delicious it’s worth the hassle.

AD_4nXdCL698i2YPj4z3UZx2O2mKiY7ulKl3F0g2QSf23TkireL3rUKRMAa1g68bamnyQd2snpy2IEDXKgxG8vu4INbHNFYSrQ6XMAsWc118ZEnPcX9PaOCFx3cvgvy8bPGDk9dAcqWd0Q

Luckily our server brought out warm towels for our sticky fingers. We didn’t ask for any other refills beside the sides skillet.

After doing a pretty good job on our food, we received the ‘Ohana bread pudding ala mode with warm caramel sauce.

AD_4nXdMb_UOVXs_ZX5O94dnsMK7k4yr-FR6pRk5AT6qOHGXJZ3odk-uL6FnzNXhXKpnZzZgDa90WrjczR_eWC7stln9EZLi71g9eskFHQNqC9dSEyfJsoQrERtJwU5zALlvy6UAPwbu

This was warm and delicious as always.

Overall we once again enjoyed our meal at ‘Ohana. Service was very good. We didn’t feel rushed and everything was brought out at a reasonable pace. With the exception of the temperature of the sides skillet, we felt all the food was as good as always. We are not sorry that we splurged on this meal and did a pretty good job of not leaving there feeling too overly full. Will we go here again? Absolutely! In fact it is one of two requests from our youngest son for our trip this spring (the other being Chef Art Smiths’ Homecomin’).

After our satisfying meal, we walked around the resort a little and then headed back to our hotel.

12/7 Beginning Our Incredible Animal Kingdom Day

We started our morning at Animal Kingdom for rope drop. As soon as we were allowed in, we headed to Navi River Journey since I had grabbed a LLSP for Flight of Passage later. After a brief wait we rode Navi and then headed over to Kilimanjaro Safari.

I’ve never seen so many hippos out of the water.

We got an upclose visit from one of the elephants.

We also saw the warthogs up and about.

It was a great morning to see so many animals.

After our safari, we headed to Satuli Canteen to try out the recently returned breakfast menu. I had originally planned on getting the Frittata and Beef: Vegetable-Goat Cheese Frittata with Wood-fired Beef tossed in Chimichurri. However, I just wasn’t in the mood for a savory breakfast. Instead, I opted to order the same thing as DH: Tropical Pandoran Forest Fruits with Fresh Yogurt, Muesli, and Honey.

AD_4nXfvRZCZV_2K60CYTmKJ4JZZN0jkfCorBuawrcrUFYwyqcNOvmNDztNyuqPhuJ2rl-4DkFobTJqM0MDZCg4FLAtIc_3ircyzG5J9xjJNirCMv_kc4ReO2166zU6bCXiuFrEGCE80eQ

We both absolutely loved this breakfast! The fruits were extremely fresh and the yogurt was nicely sweetened. It had a good variety of textures with the dried fruit and muesli. DH enjoyed this so much, he has already expressed he wants to get it again on our next trip. I was very happy with my decision to switch gears and get this.

After breakfast we watched the Feathered Friends in Flight, which is a must do for us each time we are in Animal Kingdom.

After the show, we walked the Maharajah Jungle Trek. It was a chilly morning so there really wasn’t anything to see. The Komodo Dragon wasn’t outside, the bats were hiding, and the tiger was backstage with her new cub.

We walked around for a bit and finally got a chance to see the Merry Menagerie. Very cute!

We decided to leave the park to go check out the gingerbread display at Animal Kingdom Lodge and get some lunch at the Mara.

On our way out, we exited via the Rainforest Cafe. This cheetah was ready for the holidays.

12/7 continued...Lunch at the Mara

We drove over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and told the guard we wanted to get lunch at the Mara. He let us through with no problem.

Before getting lunch, we stopped to enjoy the fabulous tree in the lobby.

We then admired the Gingerbread Display: Ginger-affe, Debra the Zebra, and their new friend, the flamingo.

The details of this display are so impressive.

We then walked around the resort for a bit attempting to find the Mara Restaurant. We went down the stairs and found Jiko, Victoria Falls Lounge, and Boma, but not the Mara. Eventually we went outside and found the pathway leading to the Mara which is actually located near the pool.

AD_4nXe-tMObkdIErfUdKhmkV1YNqJ98KmOFUoIqiYjVUGuTjAdntmaOLxWh3MwjM6yOR1YFPOGGzEQ8VqCXehMVJAK7QYS2ufJmK8pQPJtp9zERTSK8HByPPsUeIFi3qxjkcwu2JaL44A

We have heard great things about the butternut soup at Boma and were so happy to see it listed on the menu at the Mara. We each got our own cup of the butternut soup.

This soup was so full of flavor! It was so creamy and had such a great blend of spices. We both really enjoyed it! This is definitely going on the list for our future trip.

We also ordered a side of falafel to share.

This was just okay. The only other time we’ve tried falafel was from Fire Eater’s Grill at Universal and that wasn’t good. This falafel was better than that but maybe the fact is we don’t love falafel. It is just so dry.

We look forward to getting the soup again and trying some of the other offerings at the Mara on our next trip. The bowls look very good!

We headed back up through the lobby, taking another picture of the gorgeous tree.

Eager to see the decorations at Kidani Village, we walked down there. The tree here was very pretty but definitely not as magnificent as the one at the Jambo house.

After checking out the decor and the animals on the savannah, we walked back to our car and headed off to see the decorations at the All Star resorts.

Up next…the All Stars and an unexpected tasty snack.

12/7 Continued...All Star Resorts

We drove over to the All Star resorts to check out their holiday decor. Our first stop was All Star Sports. When viewing the decorations, I thought perhaps they were different from previous years. However, looking back on my 2023 pictures, they were pretty much the same.

Since we didn’t get dessert at the Mara, we took a look at the seasonal menu. Since we hadn’t tried anything gingerbread flavored yet, we ordered the Mini Gingerbread Bundt cake.

AD_4nXdGo-tiK6UI-pIqLOXXDKPtK2ncj06OmlnJV4asmuTfMaspt2VfkRIi2uJtleHGyqIdwqOqAajA3SMF_9zRqnVPxRRgK7hSSs5YShZhR66OaEOQS56tJjipEaBluYhYp4eE9fcaGw

This was better than expected. Even though this looks like it may have been in the cooler a while, it didn’t taste stale. The gingerbread flavor was subtle, tasting like a nice spice cake. We gave it a B+. It was a nice treat but nothing we’d rush to get again.

Fueled up by our treat, we then stopped by All Star Music for a peek at their decorations.

Overall we always enjoy these decorations as each resort reflects its own special theme. Having checked All Stars off of our holiday decor bucket list, we headed back to Animal Kingdom for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

We made our way over to Asia and I rode Expedition Everest in the single rider line. I had planned to ride it later when it was dark but DH encouraged me to ride then, just in case it was down later (which it ended up closing early). My DH is a wise man.

After seeing the Disco Yeti, we made our way to Yak n Yeti for dinner. We have dined here before and always enjoyed our meals. This time we opted for the healthiest things we could find. Sadly we resisted the temptation to get the Ahi Tuna Nachos (sub chicken) which, as I write this, I deeply regret.

For our appetizer, we ordered the Lettuce Cups: Wok-fried ground chicken, chopped vegetables, sweet soy glaze, crisp lettuce cups. We’ve never eaten this before.

AD_4nXeNgK_my3zb286FfQho-8vANdqTOV6pyzacpi2qKkQUWvUW0sprk9ehqXb8Rkl9vr9KO6MH7clpvAGA2JxrUrBG6T8sGsanTe3v7jNev0T3OaY0nUsS1VA0Ww0OMXvmGtN11lt4

These were pretty good, but there just wasn’t enough chicken to fill all the lettuce we received. Here’s my first lettuce cup:

AD_4nXcNOU_PsMUDMz2RP1FppfuY9Exns9aUYaZ0Q1bmf7AqlvYV7hFCwnFM1YiNzD7U4AdI4eh7TwkNxpMYTWfhrs4TSbeX7ta-r_i-nTAnxaZjZ0CnVmByBV_9RrWBXmCzs6zUsFpl-w

Lots of toppings, little filling.

For our entree, we shared the Teriyaki Chicken, another “new to us" item.

AD_4nXfIE8-L6MX1YpMt-X6qcHbTRYfS9IfVAYf2BaMAin9aocmWCs5J56ZzTxhIv8OpA_8RfjJAekiMw7XIiM7UknWT8ebQZURb-AhHeJErtriujHACx94KJ4aaeeXr6ZPtggo8kVtwMA

The chicken was well cooked and we enjoyed the salsa and vegetables. It was good but nothing overly memorable. Over the past several visits we’ve ordered the Ahi Tuna Nachos, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Lo Mein, Korean Beef, Honey Chicken and Sweet & Sour Chicken. They were all better than this dish. In fact, I would list them from top to bottom just as I did here, with Teriyaki Chicken in the last spot.

After our entree, we made the mistake of ordering dessert. Service up to this point had been great. The food came out well paced, hot and fresh. Then we ordered dessert and waited over a half hour for it to be brought to the table.

We shared the Chocolate Pudding Cake with Raspberry Sauce.

AD_4nXdeGO_uGdUbG5rJO3V39BFpKN8j9Qg1S-OzjZ0Qrzxg1Y6Ozs1Sj2UbRgwBZHzg6iAnoZkViMIZUhhwCLZJYlhMXyZMEnzzCNekavvAmMDuB7D6k4EVoWcB1fXjVXin2_5lg-gf0A

This was pretty tasty. It had rich chocolate cake with layers of chocolate pudding and a little raspberry sauce. We gave it a B. It may have scored a little better if we hadn’t waited so long to get it. We basically gobbled it up hoping we could leave. The chairs were getting very uncomfortable at this point.

It took a while to get our bill as well. There was a guest seated across from us that was having issues with a credit card or gift card and our server spent quite a long time trying to work it out with him. The guest even had to call someone on the phone to figure it out, while the rest of his family left the restaurant. I don’t know why the server didn’t leave him to sort it out and bring our check, but he didn’t. Eventually the guest gave up and paid another way and our server finally brought our check.

When we were finally liberated from Yak n Yeti, we were greeted with this beautiful view.

I have wanted to see Animal Kingdom in the dark so badly. This trip we finally lucked out with Animal Kingdom being open until 8 and the sun setting at 5:30. Any aggravation we were feeling from Yak n Yeti immediately dissipated as we enjoyed Animal Kingdom at night!

Here’s a cool pattern of light on the pavement in Asia.

I have many more spectacular night-time photos coming up next!

12/7 continued...Night Time in Pandora!

As we walked through Asia, we discovered that the holiday awakenings projections were actually visible from there. We enjoyed a great view with no crowds!

On our way to Pandora where I had booked a LLSP for Flight of Passage, we passed through Africa.

Just so beautiful, everywhere we looked!

Pandora though was the highlight of the night. We were so grateful to finally be able to witness all the bioluminescence. DH explored while I rode Flight of Passage and then re-explored with me so I could take pictures.

There was even a little bit of holiday spirit in Pandora.

This night was so incredible that I’m going to have to share even more photos in the next post…

Animal Kingdom at night is beautiful. I only got a small glimpse this past trip! I am loving all your pictures.
Have you ever tried the fried wontons with ice cream at Y&Y? Not healthy but so yummy.
We usually always have a good meal at Y&Y but have also had super slow service for the check! I ask to pay during the meal sometimes so we can get out of there, lol 😂

I was very tempted to try the fried wontons this past visit but I'm a little nervous since we don't care for the pongu lumpia. The flavor is fine but the consistency isn't my favorite. How would you say they compare? They do sound delicious (and it's fruit, so it's healthy right? :D)

12/7 Finishing a Spectacular Day at Animal Kingdom

We made our way to Dinoland to see all the beautiful lights, taking a few other pictures along the way.

We walked around to Expedition Everest but it was shut down for the evening. I'm glad I rode it earlier but it would've been cool in the dark.

Finally it was time to depart as the park closed. The tree was even more beautiful at night.

This was our absolute favorite day of our vacation. If you ever have a chance to experience Animal Kingdom in the dark, I highly recommend it. It is just spectacular!

I just found this, so happily following along!!
Now I know why you’re stopping in NC. We have made it to SC in less time but that was driving thru the night.
I love the salads at Chic fil a!! Yum!!
My youngest DS and his girlfriend went to the Ford garage in Orlando last year. They are Ford people- both have Ford trucks so they loved the theming. I’m sure they had burgers! Lol
So if you’d like to try it again it’s in the Orlando Vineland premium outlets off 535
Too bad Gideons was such a disappointment. I hate when I look forward to something and are let down.
