Hi, my dd 6 is having her first cheer competition of the season and we have been told that their hair needs to be straighted and slicked into a high pony tail. They are pretty strict about no hair being out of place etc. What technique/products do you use on long, thick hair? It has to stay in place all day:eek: Thanks

I get the best tight pony tail is when the hair is wet. I slick it back with a comb, you can put a little bit of gel in the top part to hold it. After it's up lots of hair spray. Sometimes 2 pony tail holders are best also.

i do the same as naenae...my dd is in poms and they have to do the same thing...i wash it and pull it up into a ponytail while wet and use gel to hold the bangs back...i also run the hair dryer over it once the gel is in place to make it hold better...i also spray hairspray onto it...works like a charm...dd also has to use glitter spray in hair as well...

While hair is wet, brush/comb out. Put mousse in hair, repeat previous step. Put gel in hair, comb/brush back and make/hold pony tail with one hand. Smooth out with other hand, spray lightly with hair spray. Put in pony tail. DD has very thick curly hair and this method was always fool proof.

The kids cheer team wasn't too strict, as long as their hair was up, BUT they go to a ballet school that is very particular about the bun being smooth, no flyaways, etc... especially for performances.

Like others have said, wet hair and add gel or a gel/mousse combo. I use a paddle brush to pull it up into a ponytail and then I use a boar bristle brush to smooth it out. Put pony tail in and hairspray it. That should be neat and should hold.

I think the most important thing for us was to practice a few times that were not on our way out the door for a performance. Oh, and the dance school offered a bun class at one point, maybe your cheer squad does something similar or would if asked.

We just went through this a few weeks ago for our cheer competition. While my dd's hair was wet, we used Got2b Glued gel and pulled her hair back into the pony. Then we finished it off with Aqua Net hairspray. Worked great! Good luck to her in her competition!

We pull it up in a high pony when wet and use some kind of stuff in a pink bottle you find in the ethnic aisle at walmart...man that stuff HOLDS>

same thing here...daughter has very thick hair. We use two hairties, and put it up wet. Lots of gel and hairspray usually does the trick.

We had cheer competition Sunday, and i did the same thing. Pulled it up wet and slicked back with gel, but the coaches wanted a curly pony. DD's hair DOES NOT curl, so we resorted to a hair piece from Sally's.

Couldn't do my DD's wet her hair just wouldn't cooperate wet but after putting it into the pony I just used to spray the H out of it! And not any of the expensive good hairspray but the cheap in a can industrial strength stuff our Mom's (if you are as old as me) used to use. I would spray let dry and spray again and again. watch the eyes if you get to much on the eyelids it will be hard for her to open her eyes.-yes this happened! She used to joke when I was done you could bounce a ball off her hair.

I use this gel stuff, it was described to me as goop. I get it at Sally's, it is really cheap but it works really well. It is clear and in a tub. I put it in when the hair is wet and comb it through. Good luck at your competition.

For curly ponytails, I pull up the night before in a ponytail and put in the pink sponge curlers. I take it out right before we leave the house. My daughter has bone straight hair that hates to curl this works everytime just make sure the hair is damp not wet otherwise it won't dry.

For pony elastics I like the Goody "stay put" kind. They have little rubber nubs so they don't slide.

I find my best results putting dd's hair up when its dry, I put gel all along the hairline and comb it thru. Its worked great too, I had to gel her short bangs back into a bun for a musical and not one piece of hair fell out during the show during all 4 nights. I actually got the idea from BBB, thats how they got her bangs pulled back for the hairdo with the bun and crown!

Put her hair in the ponytail while wet

Use some type of gel (some squads will allow glitter gel) and smooth it over the top after the hair is secured in the pony tail holder.

Then spray the hair all over!

Works every time!!!:thumbsup2

For long, thick hair: Start with wet hair. First spray detangling spray all over hair and comb through. While hair is still wet, distribute a dime size amount of Frizz Ease throughout hair, then slick a strong hold gel throughout hair, and pull into a ponytail with non-slip elastic. Blow dry, straightening hair with a round brush, and then once dry, flat iron hair. For thick hair I spray on Citre Shine (you can usually find this at Target) and then Strong hold hair spray. It may seem like a lot of products but afterward that hair isn't going anywhere!!!:thumbsup2

I forgot to put that my daughters (both are all-star cheerleaders) said that if they don't cry while you are putting it up you are doing it wrong....:rotfl2:

Thank you guys! I used a combination of your tips and her hair held up awesome!! By the way they won 1st place!:cheer2:
