Has anyone had this issue before??

I had a booking at RP and cancelled it for a better rate at Hard Rock.

I paid the new HR deposit and never got the refund for RP, I sent them an email and they told me they did give me the refund - it went to an old credit card that I had cancelled.

I contacted my old bank they told me the account is unable to accept refunds or any transactions as it is completely closed and the funds would have bounced back.

RP are saying "the amount was refunded" even though it has clearly bounced back to them they just keep telling me it was refunded and giving me a copy of my folio with the cancelled card number on it.

It's over $500 so a lot of money for me.
I have communicated with them via email as it is hard to call from Australia with my work and time zones.

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue before and what I can do from here?

Never had this particular problem but I would start by attaching the correspondence from your bank detailing why you didn’t receive the refund the hotel submitted. Hopefully they’ll better understand what happened and send the refund to the financial institution of your choice.

I don't know how things in Australia work but "generally" in the US refunds don't get rejected as long as the account is verified. The money usually ends up in a holding/settlement account until the bank figures out what to do with it. They will send out a paper check since there is no account to credit. This happened to me once it was only $50 and it took forever to get the check. I gave up playing the phone tag blame game, then I got a check in the mail from my bank. This happed some time ago so I don't remember how long it took to get the check but it was definitly more than a couple of months. My guess is that the person at the bank is might be making assumptions and not actually knowing what's happening. This one is going to be a tough one to sort out. Good Luck!

In the US the refund will always go back to the card you used to make the charge. The company making the charge will not refund to another card because it could be fraud or a scam. If the card was closed because of fraud and the bank issued you a new card the bank will take care of this for you. If you closed the card then after a period of time a check will be sent to you. My experience has been 6 months. I am not sure how things work in Australia.

The account was completely closed, there was no new card and they don't have a holding account.
They have told me twice on the phone the payment would have been rejected and returned to the sender.

I'm really at a loss as what to do here.
I guess I need it in writing, I'll call the bank again today and see if they can email me something to send to them.
