Has anyone tried this? My church's VBS is doing a family night with all kinds of great activities. My Sunday School class has volunteered to fun a face painting booth. The face paints are kind of expensive (6 colors for $5.00), but I could get 10 washable crayola markers for about $3.00. Seems to me like this should work just fine. What do you think?

Well, I don't let me DDs get their face painted, but I would not let someone draw on their face w/markers. Maybe its just me, but if they see someone else do it, they may think its ok as well...and pick up a non-washable marker.

It would be better if you got watercolor paints--there is 8 different colors and washes off easily.

As for "washable" markers....My coffee table would be willing to tell you to not believe everything you read.

ooooo.... good point. Can you tell my daughters are well past that age??

Ok, it was worth a try. Thank you both!

Some of the washable markers lightly stain the skin too. It eventually washes off, but takes a couple of days. Plus if the kids are sweaty (is it an outside event?) it will bleed.

No to washable markers. As a former clown I used acrylic paint. I only did hands and not faces unless the kids really wanted it. Also never force a child who doesn't want to be painted even if the parent wants it. Kid doesn't want I used to give them a sticker instead.

hands! I hadn't thought of that. What a good idea. Thanks!

I have to say that that the Preschool that I used to be a part of did face painting at a local festival. We tried many different things and ended up using washable markers for many years.

We had no complaits about that and plenty of people who wanted it done (parents allowing kids). They do make special 'tattoo' markers but they did not seem to perform any better or clean up any differently than regular old washable Crayolas (thin ones were easier to draw with).

One thing that we always did was have a sheet made up of simple drawings that the kids could choose from. This helped as we had many different face 'painters' with varying abilities and it kept it simple for them to copy and simple for the kids to choose from.

One other thought that we used this spring at the preschool carnival was the Stampin' Up kids tattoo kit. It was a kit that had 5-6 stamps that you would color on with the enclosed markers and stamp on the kids face/hand and then could fill in with the other color markers. It was good for people who had no particular artisitc talent. Also, you can buy tattos very inexpesively from Oriental and other carnival supply places (I like www.smalltoys.com) and they even come in VBS/faith themed tattoos. They clean up pretty easily the next day and look really nice.

One other thought about using acrylic paints--- maybe we have had bad experiences but it seems whenever my DD gets one done that way within and hour or so it is peeling off her face.

Wow, never really realized I had so many thoughts and opinions about face painting of all things. Oh the things you have tucked away in your brain!!!

This is exactly what happens. When my dd was in preschool they started putting a small dot on her right hand so they could do the Hokey Pokey. Well she took that to mean that she could draw all over herself. I called the teacher and asked her not to mark my child (she already knew right/left). Soon after they switched to stickers.

I have used KIDS FIRST washable markers by crayola for face painting. They are hard to find though.

They are wonderful because it comes ALL off with a wet washcloth no scrubbing or anything. Regular washable crayola markers would not do well and stain for awhile and I would be upset if someone painted my child's face with them.

We used them for a clown day and I told the kids they were special markers that only the teacher could use for face painting. Some kids prefered to have a hand paint instead of a face paint.
