We'll be staying near the Arch when we visit St Louis and are looking for a restaurant for dinner down there. Nothing that will break the bank. Somewhat kid friendly.

Any suggestions? It would be nice if we could walk to it. (Is downtown St Louis a walk-able sort of downtown? I'm thinking like Savannah.)

Max & Erma's is nearby -- if you're looking for more "tourist" fare, Hard Rock and Landry's are at Union Station (a 5-minute train ride away).

The Old Spaghetti Factory!! Just north of and walking distance from the Arch (on the landing) Corner of 1st and Morgan..

Great food, great for the kids, beautiful place, and surprisingly inexpensive.

Ozzie Smith's is not walking distance--only because of the areas you go through from near the arch.

We were there for the 4th. We went straight to the Old Spaghetti Factory. What we didn't know is that Laclede's Landing has turned into a mini Bourbon street. But it might have only been for the weekend of the 4th that it was like that. We still walked through, but we spent no extra time down there.

We also ate at Ruth's Chris in the Hyatt. They are having a $38 three-course special that includes a glass of wine. That may be a budget-buster for some, but we found that reasonable for that type of steakhouse. They do not have a printed children's menu, but they have children-size dishes. Our DD liked the lobster tank in the front. Little did she know....

We also went to the Broadway Oyster House in the shadow of Busch stadium. Again, not a walk (for some), but a 5 minute drive. But DO NOT go there if the Cards are in town. Oh, it was cajun.

Be sure to go to the City Museum.....

I don't suggest Laclede's Landing for dinner either. It gets a bit "shady" at night.

agreed!!

We are seriously thinking about the City Museum. We might not get there until after 5 or 6. I know they're open till 1 a.m., not that we'd be there that late. But how are the crowds that late? Or more really...what kinds of crowds will there be?

Thanks...off to check out all these restaurant suggestions!!

We just spent 5 days over the 4th in St Louis. Do whatever you can to go to the City Musuem. It was the highlight of our trip

Us too. We were there on the 5th. Our DD was almost too young for it. We'll go back in 5 years and that will be perfect. Then maybe again 5 years after that--also perfect.

Can't answer the Fri/Sat night question.....Sorry.

I second the City Museum. We were in St Louis for the NCAA basketball Sweet Sixteen and this was a hit with my family. We only spent a couple of hours there, but we could have easily spent several more. As far as restuarants, we ate at an Italian place that I believe was called JD Sanfillipos. It was in a hotel, but I can't for the life of me remember which one. It was very close to the arena (can't remember the name of the arena, bad I know!!). I'm sure you could ask some locals downtown and they could tell you how to get there. The food was fairly good and it wasn't too pricey. Also, if you get a chance, the tour at the Anhweiser Busch brewery was extremely fun. Neither me nor my husband drink, but it was still neat to see how beer is made.

I always post this and people may be tired of me saying it but the City Museum is not safe. My niece had to have pins and screws put into her ankle after a fall there on a piece of equipment. There have been other injuries reported too. My kids do not go there.

I can believe this. But we still had a great time.....

Downtown STL isn't quite walkable but some hotels are more walkable to restaurants than others...which hotel will you be staying at? If you are staying on Laclede's Landing- you can walk to Jake's Steaks or Old Spaghetti Factory, no problem

If you are staying on Washington - there are a number of restaurants walkable there. Between Old Courthouse and Arch, mostly hotel restaurants are walkable. I wouldn't necessarily walk from the Adams Mark to the Old Spaghetti factory after dusk but at 5 pm? No problem.

Another thing about City Museum (and it is a neat place, not trying to discourage anyone from going) is to be sure and park in THEIR lot, not on the street. Our van got broken into on a Sunday morning - it wasn't very busy so we decided to save our money. Learned the hard way that it is not a nice area and they have car break-ins and thefts every day. Our passenger window was busted and luckily they didn't get anything (we had 2 laptops, my purse, all kinds of valuables) because of the alarm. But we had to drive 100 miles home w/ a gaping window.

I don't think I would ever go there late at night, although I bet it would be really cool!

We live near St Louis and visit alot. At night St Louis can get a little sleazy but nothing too bad. We have never had any trouble there. Walking around during the day is fine downtown, but stick to the Metra at night or close by your hotel.

We love the Old Spagetti Factory but honestly its alot easier to get into at lunch time, we try to arrive just before opening and get seated immediately. Its really good food and not very expensive. Really a great value as most meals come with soup or salad, bread, iced tea/coffee and even ice cream. Oh and they offer carriage rides out front at night!

City Museum is AWESOME, we have been taking our girls for 9 years. Our oldest is 15 and still LOVES it! However you do have to be careful, there are lots of things to climb in, around, thru. And while we have had no accidents I have scolded my girls for being too daring and jumping off things too high. Also wear old clothes, especially bottoms as both my girls have ripped pants and shirts sliding off things. Most of the things there are made of rebar so thats what snags.

Ok so suppose I said I was willing to leave downtown for dinner? Are there any cool places within a 30 min drive or so from downtown?

Sorry to ask again. I'm just trying to look at all my options from home rather than making quick decisions in St Louis.

How old are your kids? Are you adventurous or picky? How much are you willing to spend? Are you looking for a chain restaurant or something you can't get anywhere else?

There are hundreds of great restaurants in the St. Louis area, but without knowing more about you, it's hard to make recommendations :)
