Came back from vacation, person sitting with our dogs said the last night before we came home, one of them had an 'accident'. She cleaned it up and said we might want to get a rug cleaner. The next day we did rent a rug doctor machine from our supermarket... bought special pet cleaner additive, etc... WELL, ever since that we've had a horribleeee I MEAN HORRIBLE urine/ammonia smell through out my basement, which is also my sons room. We can't seem to find the source of the smell... we can't get rid of it, air fresheners, baking soda... odor eliminating gels in jar... We are now putting white vinegar in a bowl and leaving it overnight, saw it on google.

Can anyone HELP US PLEASE!!! I don't know what to do!
Never ever had this

Just a thought, are any of the dogs male? Possibly the urine odor isn't in the rug, but from a piece of furniture or doorframe/wall?

That's all I can think of.

Suction is the key for cleaning, along with very hot water. We own a carpet cleaning company. You may clean the carpet, but remember the urine gets trapped in the pad. You need an enzyme to break it up. If you are smelling it , more are you sure the dogs haven't had an accident before?

Nature's Miracle from the Petsmart does an amazing job removing the stain and the odor.
I use a Bissell carpet cleaner, if it's really bad you could ask around and see if anyone you know has one. It does an amazing job (we had a Hoover, it was no where near the same). Or call a professional carpet cleaner, who could also do the upholstery.

We have male and female ... I believe it's the female, he never has lifted a leg in my home, he's 5. Even to be spiteful he never has done it.

Thanks - bought the pet cleaner thought maybe that had enzymes in it. Maybe time to get a professional in.. i'm going to try the vinegar in a bowl for 24 hours, we still have the Rug Doctor, so maybe again tomorrow we'll clean the carpet.

I have it, the woman who watched the dogs brought it with her that day.

I actually just went downstairs w/ my son and we looked around our ceiling. We took out 3 pieces of insulation from the rafters and thru it out - seemed to be 'smelly' to us, so maybe, just maybe, she pee'd *or he did :O))* and it leaked thru the wood floors.
Our ceiling is open due to electrical repairs... so it was easy to take the insulation down...

WE WILL SEE!!!

I can't help but wonder whether the dogs had more than one "accident" while the OP was gone (meaning I wonder whether the house sitter was actually making sure the dogs were taken out as they were supposed to be).

Nature's Miracle is what I was going to recommend too. It really works wonders. If it didn't help, you may need professional help.

So where did the dog pee? Upstairs or in the basement?

If it was upstairs some sources of the smell may be the wall beneath where the dog had the accident. Or it may have gotten into air vents. Again depending on where she went. My friend went through this and it had seeped through the floorboards.

I had a problem with this several years ago and tried many ways to fix it and even had a professional come in to treat the area. I could still smell it and it drove me nuts. I pulled the carpet up at the wall, folded it back to where the area of smell was, used a box cutter to cut out a portion of the carpet pad and replaced it. Before replacing that pad though, I sprayed the floor with the enzyme stuff. While it was up, I also sprayed the underside of the carpet with the enzymatic stuff and let it dry for a couple of days. This FINALLY took care of the problem.

Any bacterial/enzymatic cleaner will work, it doesn't have to be Nature's Miracle. Nature's miracle DOES use a stronger fragrance, but that's about the only difference.

You can also use straight vinegar, and if the stain is old (yours isn't - yet) this is the only thing I know of that works.

But for now, since you've done a good washing, you should probably saturate the area with pet enzyme. Not wet - saturate.

It sounds as though the stain did go through to your insulation, which you've removed, soooo. . .you may be okay.

Good luck!

Most likely your noticing it since you were away. Get a black light to find the source of the odor. I will show you exactly where the stains are in the dark, then treat it.

Could be - I'm know I'm sure this could be the case, as they aren't used to the routine as we were gone - but I also know that she came alot to let them out - lives local - played w/ them, etc.. I trust she did the right thing - she also feels horrible as I was speaking to her last night a little bit - she owned a pet store and sold products that I was asking about her.

Actually had an accident in the basement in my son's room --- that was *2*, but I think she, the little girl, actually peed on my dining room floor and it seeped thru to the insulation in our basement ceiling... seemed smelly... so... we took out 3 pieces and it seems to be better this morning, i'm going to spray more vinegar today and run my humidifier, even thought that's not going to help but it's that time of year ;)

This is what I was going to suggest. Urine will glow under a black light and you will be able to more easily find the source of the odor than by just smell. FWIW, I *hate* the smell of Nature's Miracle almost as much as I hate the smell of dog/cat pee :crazy2:.

Just a thought. You said because of moisture this time of year you will be running your dehumidifier.
My Mother's basement had odors (but not pet). The product, DampRid worked wonders. We bought the bucket size at Lowes. Around $8.00.
Maybe it will help with your pet odors, by drawing all the moisture out?
Remove the plastic lid, but not the plastic film cover on top.

It is pretty strong. Petsmart has its own line now that comes in nicer fragrances (one is lavender and pretty nice - I use this in the rinse on my jogging clothes) and Petco's brand of enzymatic/bacterial cleaner has almost no fragrance.

If a dog has separation anxiety (or an infection) you can take that dog out however many times a day you want and they'll hold some back to go in the house.

Unless you have the great dane for a dog, who held his pee for a week, then had a flood----I seriously doubt the odor is from pet urine. My doggies have accidents from time to time (once every few months), and other than a few spritzes of bissel pet rug cleaner, and standing on the area were they had the accident to really absorb the stain with several repeat stacks of paper towels---in no way, shape or form is there any residual stain or smell from the accident. Perhaps you have some sort of leak, or smell coming from another offending area.
