Do you wear gloves to handle raw meat?

My spouse is off to India and I ended up having a casual dinner with friends last night. After the dishes were put away and while talking I started to package up ground beef I had purchased at Costco into 1 LB packs to freeze.

Before I started I put on a pair of those blue Nitrile gloves. My friend said I cracked her up and she kept calling me Princess and Dexter. Is it really that strange to not handle raw meat with your bare hands? I do this with everything from ground beef, steaks, chicken to bacon this morning at breakfast.

Anyone else put on gloves when handing raw meat?

Nope, I just make sure to wash my hands after handling it

I find raw meat to be just gross, and don't like the feel of it on my hands. S0 - yes, we have a box of food-grade gloves for just this purpose. I wouldn't do it for steaks, and bacon is easily handled with tongs. But if I am doing much with chicken or ground beef - yes - I glove up.

Washing hands is a much more effective and cost effective way to handle raw meat.

Nope, don't know anyone who wears gloves while handling meat.

Lol...no!! I would crack up too if I saw someone doing that at their house. :rotfl:

I don't use gloves, and though I'm pretty squeamish about most things, raw meat has never bothered me at all. I've been handling it since I was about 8 years old in my great-grandmother's kitchen.

This made me think of the lady that use to wear goggles while cooking bacon. Anyone remember that? :rotfl:

But no, I don't. It's never even crossed my mind.

I wash my hands before and after, but no gloves. Not outrageous to wear gloves though, just different. I am noticing more and more checkers at grocery stores wearing gloves though. Not sure if it's to protect them from all the customers germs or to protect them from leaking food packaging, but I am seeing it more and more.

I never have, but given how much I hate handling raw meat, I might start. The idea of wearing gloves never occurred to me before.

I do wear gloves to clean my bathroom.

I do. I started when my DS was a toddler. I was worried that he would get himself into a predicament and my hands would be covered in chicken and it would delay me from getting to him. Now I've been doing it so long that it feels strange to handle meat with my hands!

No, I choose not to live my life with the fear that every little germ is going to kill me.

I do, however, use common sense, and wash my hands before and after handling raw meat.

I do. I don't like the feel of raw meat and I always feel like it gets stuck under my nails.

Nope, but I do when cutting up hot peppers. Learned my lesson on that one!!!

Side note, is uncooked bacon really considered "raw"?

Edit: I do usually wear gloves when gutting deer, and sometimes when butchering. Not once it's been packaged though.

I don't. As others have said, I just wash really well before and after handling raw meat. Do you use disposable ones? If so, don't they have a powdery substance on them?

Nirtile gloves do not have powder on them. I find that my hands even after vigorous washing still feel greasy after handling Bacon and ground meat.

It started with chicken because I am paranoid about Salmonella poisoning and it just went on to include other raw meats.

I wear them for handling ground beef. I have longish nails and I hate the feeling of getting the ground beef under them. I also hate the feeling of the fat from the meat building up on my hands as I make meatballs so the gloves solve that too.

No, I just wash my hands well after handling the meat in question!

I hate the feel of raw chicken too- icky and slimy!

I learned the exact same lesson regarding the hot peppers. Never to be repeated again:scared1:

DH and I always wear gloves when we gut. There is no unlimited supply of hot water to clean you hands with after you are done. It gets under your nails and dries on your hands so fast, it takes a while to clean even with hot, soapy water. I do wear gloves when we process. The meat has been hanging in a cooler, and when you process and are working with it for several hours, it makes my hands ache. The gloves offer some protection from the cold.

Other than that, I never even considered wearing gloves when handling meat. Just wash my hands after I am finished::yes::

I always bring a bucket of water with me when I hunt and leave it in the truck. Last deer DD shot though was on a 20 degree day and my bucket froze LOL. I also keep baby wipes and paper towels handy :). I live very close to where I hunt, so sometimes I don't field dress until I get home.
