Do you get the 2% Costco rewards back

when you use a Costco gift card? Or is it only for cash?

I have the $100 membership and we get 2% back on all purchases in a nice check at the end of the year to pay for our next year's membership.

I have a Visa that gives 2% back on all purchases and was buying gift cards for Christmas with it at Costco.com and wondered if I could end up with 4% back by using my Visa to purchase gift cards and then buying groceries with my gift cards.

Anyone know?

Ok. Here is what I found on their website.

Reward is not calculated: (i) on purchases of cigarettes or tobacco-related products, gasoline, Costco Cash Cards, postage stamps, alcoholic beverages in certain states (including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan), and at food courts; (ii) on membership fees; (iii) on purchases not recorded through Costco's front-end registers and transactions done on or through Web sites not hosted by Costco even if accessed through Costco.com, including all business, consumer, and insurance services, the online photo center, Costco Travel, and the My Publisher website; (iv) on miscellaneous fees, deposits and taxes, including sales tax; (v) where prohibited by law or regulation; (vi) on purchases made by anyone other than the account's primary or primary Household Cardholder; and (vii) on certain other categories as determined at Costco's discretion, which may change without notice.

What GCs are you buying at Costco? I know I earn the 2% back and it doesn't matter how I pay. (Sometimes I use my AMEX, debit card, or cash.)

I am just buying Costco gift cards to Costco.

I think, if I am reading that correctly, that what you have quoted says that if you purchase gift cards you cannot get Costco's 2% back, but would you get the 2% when you use the gift card to purchase items with your Costco membership and those cards?

I was just thinking about that. I guess you would. Hmm....maybe I will start using my Southwest CC to buy the gcs and then get the 2% back when I shop.

Well, I need to buy some gift cards anyway to get the Mastercard promo. The problem is, how do you know? At least with a CC you can see your points, but I am guessing I would need to ask at Costco to see about their policy.

I don't think you do, at least you didn't use to.

My parents use to buy me Costco Cash Cards so I could take advantage of their good gas prices (you don't need a membership card if you use the Costco Cash Cards) and they wouldn't get the 2% back for either the card purchase or for the gas purchased with the card.

I see.

Well, I would still get my 2% back from my credit card purchase.

I don't get gas at our Costco because there are a couple of places cheaper for us.

Unless you are scanning their membership card, they wouldn't get the 2% back. In addition, you don't earn 2% back on gas with the executive membership. It says front end purchases and it specifically says not on gas. Here is a link to the 2% program.

Also, I read it several times and it doesn't say anything about not earning 2% back when you pay with a Costco GC. It actually doesn't specify any certain TYPE of payment, just certain THINGS that you can purchase that won't earn you the 2%.

I noticed a week or so ago that the memberships (at least at my store) have gone up 10%. $55 (from $50) for regular, $110 (from $100) for Executive. Still worth it in my situation, but it's another thing to factor into your 2% calculations in the future :)

I was online yesterday and it says I can renew for $100, wonder if this is until January 1st?

It did say new memberships were $110.

Our renewal is due in March but we prepaid it last month at the $100. They did it at Customer Services. Only glitch was that they had to cancel our auto-renew to get the old rate but $10 bucks is $10 bucks.

FYI - As posted above, three main items that does not count towards 2% membership rewards is Gasoline, Cigarettes, and Costco Cash Cards. You can still earn a rebate using your Costco branded American Express Card but no double dip.

But my question isn't about double dipping through Costco.

I am asking if I get the 2% back from Costco if I scan MY Costco card but pay with Costco gift cards.

The "double dipping" would be 2% back from MY American Express by purchasing gift cards online. That is separate and Costco has no way of knowing if or what I get as a rebate on my own personal credit card.

So, it would be 2% to my CC and 2% for using it at Costco to purchase items.

Sorry, I interpreted your original post as asking about double dipping because I forgot that you can use Visa/MC at Costco.com. :worship:

I don't see why buying the GCs as you described shouldn't work : 2% Visa plus 2% Costco Executive equals 4% total effective rewards.

Well, I forgot Costco even had an American Express until you said something.

We went with Fidelity because they offer 2% back on ALL purchases, not only at Costco or on certain items.
