What is your fav dinner roll recipe? I was assigned to make for T'giving at MIL and I have never made. Any helpful hints? I am the "buy from the grocery store kind of girl" but everyone brings great homemade items and I am fearful of being the family outcast over non-homemade starches...

I really like the frozen ones (made by Rhodes). They're pre-formed, you put them in a pan, cover them, let them rise for few hrs, then bake. They taste really good (imo).

The absolute best dinner rolls are the frozen Rhodes dough in the freezer section. Just thaw the dough according to the directions & bake them up--lots of yeast taste! I made a batch in a 9x13 for the in-laws party a few years ago & have a SIL who is a Martha Stewart & makes everything from scratch. They all liked them so much that her dh told her she should buy them instead of making hers! :lmao:

You can't go wrong with Rhodes! :thumbsup2

We love the Rhodes!!!!

Another one I make quite often is the "red lobster" biscuits on the side of the Bisquick box. You use milk, bisquick, shredded cheese and then drop them on the pan. Brush them with melted butter with garlic salt mixed in and bake.

Ditto. And no one has to know they're not homemade (unless they ask for the recipe, of course)

We always get the Sister Shuberts yeast dinner rolls. To die for good!! Soft, chewy, smells divine and oh so yummy! Of course, she may just be a southern thing, not sure about the availability...

Southern Living has never steered me wrong when it comes to recipes! This one for sour cream dinner rolls is pretty easy:

Just be sure to cool the cooked mixture to the appropriate temperature before you add the eggs or else you'll end up with little pieces of cooked egg in your dough. You'll need a candy thermometer to check the temperature. I like how you can make the dough the night before.

One tip: if your house is cold and you don't have a warm place (85 degrees or so) for the dough to rise, heat your oven to the lowest possible temperature (mine is 105). By the time you open the oven and put in your rolls and close it again, the temperature will be good for letting the dough rise. The oven will stay warm enough for the 45 minutes you need for this recipe.

But...if you're really freaked over the idea of making bread dough, you could try this recipe that just dresses up frozen roll dough:

The recipe calls for using poppy, sesame, and fennel seeds. I don't know that I'd use fennel for Thanksgiving dinner rolls, but I'm not a big fan of fennel. You could just use extra poppy and sesame seeds instead.

Good luck! If you have time, you could always make a test batch tonight to see how it goes.

Me too, but now I want to try the Rhodes rolls to see what they are like.

Sister Schuberts are fantastic, and easier than Rhodes, because they're prebaked. But if you want to be able to tell people you *baked* your rolls, go with Rhodes. ;)

I agree with the Rhodes assessment...they're always great.

If you want to try making them yourself, Pioneer Woman has a great recipe up for Parker House Rolls. Her recipes always turn out great. I'm hoping to try it for Thursday. :)

I also use Sister Shuberts and got a $1.00 off coupon in Paula Deen's Thanksgiving magazine!!

This is a recipe I've used for years, found it on the Food Network. I am NOT a cook and I'm asked to make this EVERY year:

Ingredients
1 bag yeast rolls, frozen dough
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1 1/2 teaspoons ranch-style dressing mix
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley)
Fresh herbs, for garnish
Directions
Remove 12 frozen roll dough balls from bag. Use a nonstick spray on a baking sheet and arrange the yeast rolls; approximately 1/4-inch apart, to form a ring Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and set in a warm spot in the kitchen to thaw and rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 3 hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a small bowl, combine melted butter and ranch dressing mix. Brush tops and sides of rolls with butter mixture. Sprinkle rolls with finely chopped herbs. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown.

Serve on cake stand, garnished with fresh herbs

The red lobster ones are the ones I make. Our family loves them and they are super easy but they are biscuits rather than a traditional roll.

If you want to get really fancy you can shape the Rhodes dough.

You can make it into twists or knots or even cut each roll into thirds, roll into balls, and tuck into a muffin pan for cloverleaf rolls. Brush with a little melted butter before baking.

It's a super easy way to make them look special!

I agree with the Rhodes frozen rolls! This is what we do most of the time. I do make rolls from scratch sometime too, but if you have never made rolls from scratch, you may not want to try it out to take somewhere. I make great bread, my mom can't make bread at all!

great ideas - but I'm afraid of being asked for the recipe on the Rhodes. I need to do more research tomorrow!
