Hey all. I'm looking for recommendations for our first visit to Din Tai Fung! We're for sure going to order Pork Xiao Long Bao and the Chocolate Mochi buns for dessert. How many orders of each would you get for a group of 5 adults? What are your other favorite items we should consider? There's so much to choose from and I'm not sure how much food to order.

If this helps, this is what we split between two adult women with hearty appetites:

  • Pork XLB
  • Kimchi dumplings
  • Cucumber app
  • Chicken rice cakes
  • Chocolate mochi dessert

This was the perfect amount for us, we ate every bite and were full without being totally stuffed. We also hadn't eaten in like 10 hours as this was after our flight to LAX, so take that as you will

I've had a couple other things on the menu before, such as the pork ribs app and spicy wontons, and beef noodle soup. I'd skip the soup in the future, nothing special. Ribs andd wontons are shareable, maybe between 2-3? I would probably order a few apps and then maybe 3 carbs like the noodles or rice cakes or fried rice, and then at least 1 order of XLB/dumplings total per person. You can always order a bit less and order more, things come out super quickly and they try to pace them so it's not all at once.

All the dumplings and XLB are small, like 1 large bite. So they aren't super filling. The noodles/rice/rice cakes help round out the meal a lot. The green beans are another super popular app but I just can't pay that much for a vegetable, the cucumber price was bad enough :rotfl2:

As far as items to order: the green beans, shrimp fried rice. Honestly, I would go back for the beans, shrimp fried rice and dessert, I don't need the dumplings. The chocolate is good but I'd go for the taro dumplings as well w/side of sea salt cream.

We go to DTF all the time as there are 3 within 15 minutes of where we live.

Good news is you don't need to order everything at once, and you can start with a few things and add on.

Our favorites (we mix it up so we don't order everything every time)
Cucumber Salad
Fried Green Beans or Bok Choy
Pork XLB
Sticky Rice Dumplings
Spicy Wontons
Chicken Rice Cakes
Wonton Soup
Veggie Fried Noodles
Chicken Fried Rice
Sticky Ribs (appetizer)
Pork and Veggie Buns

In all the years we've gone (and it's been quite a while) I've never ordered the chocolate dumplings for dessert so?!?

Oooooo so glad I saw this! Having dinner there next month for my birthday and I can't wait!!!!

Lots of great options already shared! We also like:

- Chicken dumplings
- Shao mai
- Taiwanese cabbage
- Pork chop fried rice
- Tofu puff glass noodle soup
- Sea salt cream black/green tea
