Did You Choose Laminate Countertops for a Kitchen Remodel?

Tell me about your laminate countertops... The other options are so expensive. I went to Home Depot today to look at samples and I like the look of some of the Wilsonart premium laminates. How much did your countertops cost and are you happy with them?

I've used Wilsonart HD tops twice & love them! We did the mid-tone tan/brown Desert color w/a rounded edge & it was really pretty. In this house, I went w/the Sedona Bluff & love that as well. Although the contractor talked me into going w/the edge that is still rounded but thicker & I like the thinner round edge better. It's holding up well so far - 6 mo - and really updated the look of the kitchen. It was $3000 for the tops/install fee & tile backsplash for a U shaped kitchen plus desk area. I'm not a huge cook & use cutting boards so laminate is fine by me.

Which colors are you looking at?

Just installed corian from their "ten" collection that gives nice higher grade corian at low price $58 sq ft (bethany for us) went to lowes with a 10% home depot coupon and made them compete and ended up with corian for $2000 with a free sink included, ogee edge and installled. It looks amazing and cleans like a dream. Just a thought....

I had the Wilsonart Laminate in my last house. Cost for the laminate itself was about $300. It was supposed to be temporary until I could upgrade to granite, but we liked it and moved before we felt the need to upgrade (4 years later).

In our extremly economical kitchen remodel we used stock laminate counter tops. Stock means the prefab pieces that you buy in different lengths to match your kitchen, there are about 5 different colors at each of the home improvement stores. They were pretty inexpensive-I believe under $200 for the entire kitchen- and they look really nice. I am very happy with them.

We just put quartz countertops in our new home, but I just recently went into a friend's house who had the Wilsonart HD. I had to look really close to tell they weren't granite, and honestly, had I not been going through the building process myself, probably would have left thinking it was granite. I seriously considered changing my mind on my own kitchen after being in hers. I didn't simply due to the color and design of the quartz pattern I had picked out - I was sold on it and didn't want to change.

Just had our granite kitchen countertops put in about 3 weeks ago. So far, we love them! They look amazing! Also, very easy to keep up. We are definately glad we spent the money on them(about $2000).

I have about 60 square feet of countertop so the other options are not in my budget. I did see Home Depot has very basic colors of Corian for $37 sf.

The samples I really like that I picked up today are Wilsonart Laminate Premium Sunstone and Mesa Gold.

Wow that seems pricey for Corian. I just got quartz (Cambiria counters for $60 a sq ft.). Did your price include labor? I hope it did. Anyway...we had quartz (Cambria) counters installed in our kitched and master bath. I love them!

Can't give you a price... but we put laminate in our kitchen (very large plus six person raised bar), bathrooms and basement kitchen area. We love it and wouldn't change it in any way.

We looked into other options - but for price and durability the laminate fit our situation perfectly.

We just put in Premium Wilsonart Laminate in our kitchen a few weeks ago. We went with the quarry finish... I think the color was Bella something but we love them!! They look great... :)

That is what I liked about the Wilsonart. We choose a pattern that looked almost exactly like the granite we wanted. If you were just passing thru you couldn't really tell it wasn't granite. To put granite in would have been about $5K (10 years ago), the laminate was $300.

We have WilsonArt laminate. Ours are dark green with specks of browns and blacks. It looks good, but it would never pass for granite unless you were across the room or the lights were low; it lacks the luster and shine of granite.

We went with the laminate because we have a huge kitchen, and the laminate was much more budget-friendly (we paid more than $2000 installed; Corian would've been almost double). Two years later, we have a couple spots that are "no longer perfect" -- by the time we sell the house, there'll be more. I doubt anyone else sees them at this point, but I do. There are two spots by the stove where DH's put a hot pot down, and the color is just a little "different", and there are a couple places here and there where the edge of the laminate is "dinged" (we have the beveled edges, so we have more "edge" than most people).

In retrospect, I wish we'd spent the extra money and bought Corian or tile (or something else mid-priced). Though it's all the rage now, I wouldn't have gone with granite because it would've been overkill in our 1960s ranch house. The reality is that though the countertops are perfectly good right now, we will certainly be forced to re-do them when we sell the house (which we plan to do when our daughters finish school in 8 years).

One more comment: Home Depot was AWFUL to work with. I will never hire them to do anything in my house again. When I had my tile backsplash put in, it was done by a small local store -- the price was better, and they did excellent work! So don't assume that the big box stores will give you a better price than the little guy.

We went with the Wilsonart HD Deepstar Slate this past winter and we're very happy with it.

and granite is a great resale investment. Corian in my opinion is too expensive and chips. I'm not a fan of tile plus it's a personal thing, so might not be good for resale.

Laminates nowadays are nicer than they used to be; they even have nice edges which makes them look more real.

Here's a board all about kitchen remodeling from ultra high end to budget friendly in case you're so inclined.

You can just google to find lots of choices in pre-fab granite.

These are my not humble opinions.

Countertops from Lowes. We paid 22 dollars a running foot. We have a Home Depot and a Lowes and the Home Depot price was 33 dollars a running foot. So it was a no brainer to go with Lowes. My husband is installing them but for our 24 feet of countertops we paid a little over 500 dollars. They are beautiful!!! We bought the deepstar agate color.

When we remodeled our old kitchen when we were first married my husband put in a tile counter top. I loved it. It was very durable and unlike what my mom said I was not breaking my dishes on it! Now we have moved into a new house (it was a year ago in April) We have laminate. It's ok. I don't like where the placed the seem , I know one day it will start to peel there. My biggest compliant is it's no heat resistant. So far I have avoided burning it but that is truly by luck. We are planning eventually upgrading to granite. Most likely DH will but in granite tile just because of the cost

Interesting topic! We are remodeling right now and are debating between the HD Wilsonart and the honed finish Formica. My neighbor suggested we put them to a hammer test. DH took a small hand tool and tapped one of the HD (high definition) samples from Wilsonart and it cracked on the first tap and left a huge whitish gouge mark on the surface. He then began to tap the Formica sample with his tool and not only did it not crack but left just a small mark on the surface but only after about 10-12 hits with his wrench. After reading this I am tempted to put the samples to the "burn" test. I would love to use granite tiles but we have so much sq. footage on our counter/island space that it just doesn't fit the budget we have to work with now. I was really excited about the Wilsonart HD until DH did the hammer test. However, reading some posts from those of you who actually have it installed makes me more willing to take another look at it. Any comments on the durability of HD? Also, what color do you have and how much do your seams show on that color? Would you choose a lighter or darker shade if you had it to do over?

Mom Poppins,

What kind of edge did you go with? If it's rounded is it the small or large? Did you like it?

I know in our area and price range of house that granite is now considered the norm. We too have laminate and I have no prblem with it but when neighbors have put houses on the market, they are finding buyers want granite for this price range which was not the norm when we bought 10 years ago. Most spec houses now have it included in price, I think! Just a thought from the resell perspective.
