Cruise ship RMS Queen Mary now in bad shape in Long Beach Harbor

We went to that once. It was way back then a nice thing to go see but given the advent of modern cruise ship design, I'm not sure it's a real tourist draw any more. I see this ending with the QM sinking into the harbor and being an eyesore for 10 years while they argue over whose job it is to fix her up.

This has been an issue for years, which is a shame. It really is a beautiful icon to visit. Used to go for firework shows and they had the best milk shakes around.

I watched something on You Tube about that ship last week.
They had such great ideas for her, too bad it none of them came to be.

It's sad to see these once magnificent vessels being left to rot. Much the same thing is happening in Philadelphia with the S.S. United States. She is the winner of the Blue Ribband for fastest crossing of the Atlantic. A beautiful ship, even in her deteriorated state. Not long after she was docked in Philly (when I still lived there) a friend of mine pulled some strings and got me aboard for a tour. Real Scooby Doo vibes, but I could just imagine what she was like when she was still sailing. She has changed hands several times and almost been scrapped several times as well. The intention was to have her be a part of the revitalization of the old Navy Yard but it never happened.

She was built in my city of Newport News. And in early 1990’s she was docked in Norfolk Va I guess to be auctioned off and I was on a dinner cruise and saw her and thought how she must of looked back in the day.

We toured the Queen Mary and she is quite a gem. I hope that they figure this out.

The last I heard the old Delta Queen riverboat is deteriorating too. We aren’t doing too well with these historic ships.

We also toured the queen Mary and it was such a beautiful ship with an amazing history. I’m hoping that bureaucracy and red tape doesn’t get in the way of getting fixed up.

Nah. The big thing is going to be money, and whether or not the city of Long Beach is going to sink the money it will take for repairs. The ship itself apparently isn’t a big moneymaker without subsidies from the city, which legally owns it.

I was incorrect earlier. Disney never owned it, but was the contracted operator. I think it and the Spruce Goose were part of the plans for Port Disney before they scrapped it in favor of WestCOT in Anaheim. Of course neither plans materialized.

Very sad!! She's a gorgeous ship. I would love the opportunity to visit but that looks like it's probably not going to happen.

Even when I visited Mary about 15 years ago she looked a bit shabby and deteriorated.

I really enjoyed staying on her waiting on our cruise
We didn’t stay on it - the rates were ridiculous and really the only value would have been the novelty. We did go for brunch there once before boarding a cruise and it was interesting to see.

QM is a beautiful ship. Filled with a lot of history and experiences. QM is also a very haunted ship as well. Seen her multiple times. Over the decades many different events have been held there to help generate income. It’s simply not enough. The QM is way past her expiration date. It would be best and funds better spent to dismantle the ship and have an indoor QM museum like there is with the Titanic.

The TV reality show Parking Wars was filmed in Philly. Many scenes were from the impound lot in South Philly near the river. You could sometimes see the United States in the background behind IKEA.

She's an impressive sight when you stand next to her on the dock. Absolutely massive, and when you get on the deck you feel like an ant. I wasn't allowed inside the ship. I was told that not much of her original fittings remain in there anyway. I think it's a shame that these ships are left to rot, but their upkeep is just too astronomical.
