Clogged Sink... Any suggestions other than a plumber?

I put some potato peelings down the garbage disposal and it is now stopped up. This has happened before and it always clogs further than my husband's plumber snake will go (professional plumber had a longer snake).

Since it is of course all my fault, I would rather not call a plumber. Drain-o didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Did you get the liquid Drano or the gel Drano? I've tried the liquid many times without it working AT ALL. So someone suggested the gel Drano and it worked like a dream. She said to look at it like this.....liquid Drano will just run right through your pipes where the Drano GEL will actually stick to whatever is clogging it and will disolve it. HTH

Is it draining slowly or not at all? I didn't think you could get a snake down a sink with a garbage disposal. You may have to remove the trap under the sink and run the snake from there. Unless that's what you meant when you said your DH plumbers snake wasn't long enough.

The clog is beyond the garbage disposal, so we are going down the other side of the sink. I think there was probably already a clog and I made it worse. It drains really slow.

We used the liquid kind of Drain-o.

This used to happen with me and potatoe peels. I was able to force it through using a plunger. However I *think* this was in a single sink so I didn't have to worry about it coming up the other side ... Now that I think about it that might not work with a double sink huh?

I second the Drano Gel...

Here's another question ... why can't you use that stuff in the toliet?

At our last home we had a double sink that often clogged -- but there wasn't the garbage disposal issue. However, this might work.

  • Plug & fill the sink with the garbage disposal drain with water.
  • Run water into the other sink, but no plug.
  • Plunge the sink drain without the plug.
Usually this would clear up the blockage for me -- YMMV, but best of luck!

I second that! There's a thing with me and potato peels too :rolleyes1

I don't have a disposal, but I thought you're not supposed to put potato peels (and a few other things) down them.

 I did not know you can't put potato peels down the garbage disposal. I do it all the time! I've never had a clog, though.

I do, however, have a problem with my husband tossing the caps to beer bottles in the sink. They make a terrible noise when they fall into the disposal!

I did that last week with angel hair pasta. It was 4 days before DH could get it fixed. He finally found a tool that you can get a home depot/lowes. You attach it to the garden hose and stick it in the pipe. When the water is turned on the thing expands and and seals off so the water is forced to continue on, the pressure blows out the clog. Worked like a charm, no for the name im not sure BUT when I talk to DH this am Ill ask him, he is at work right now, but ill hear from him in a little while. DH is so handy he wouldnt call plumber LOL, i was begging him too, but I have to say it was nice not to pay a big plumber bill.

Yesterday on the Today Show there was someone telling how to get rid of clogs with household items.

She said to pour baking soda & vinegar down the drain, let it sit for 10-15 min. then pour boiling water down the drain.

I don't know if it works but might be worth a shot.

Thanks - I found the directions on the web for doing that: http://www.everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=75 , I think it loosened up things a bit, but we still have a clog.

I think it is genetic. My Dad and brother never call a plumber, or anything like that. Part being ego, part being cheap. My FIL, however, doesn't fix ANYTHING around the house. My husband does fix somethings, but is not a "handy man".

We did try the plunger and now he is off t Home Depot for some gel Drain-O and see if you can find that tool. (Still cheaper than a plumber).

Don't put a lot of eggshells down a disposal either.

And don't ask me how I know.
