Generally knowing what you're doing and a little bit of luck. Most that do it follow these rules in the link below, I personally have my own rules. Such as counting Space Mountain as two different rides.

My contention isnt that you have to plan. Its that you cant complain when you dont. I dont hard core plan any trip these days but I have before and I still "plan" specific parts. The more you know about how to do the parks the less you have to plan. But people who complain about planning and then complain their trip wasn't as much fun because they missed so much made their own beds. At that point the only person you can point a finger at is yourself
