Cellphone service in Bahamas?

Hello everyone - coming here with a last-minute question before our cruise next week.....

Does anyone have experience with cellphone service in the Bahamas (or Castaway Cay)? Wondering if I needed to get any travel plan from AT&T before leaving. Or maybe it's not even worth just for a 4 day cruise?

Thanks!

I've used AT&T in Nassau and on Castaway. I paid $10 for each 24 hour period I used it. There's some kind of Global plan that I signed up for where I only get charged the $10 if my phone is activated in one of the countries on it's list.

Thanks - that's exactly what I wondered about. (Also have AT&T). I have done the same kind of plan when going to Europe, so I can set that up this week before leaving. Not that I plan to be doing too much on the phone, but a nice to have.

Not sure about AT&T, but once you activate it with Verizon it stays on your account.

We used our AT&T plan when docked in Bermuda on the WBTA last month. Once you’ve added that service to the plan, you get a (free) text message reminding you that the service is available when you arrive in a new location and go out of airplane/no-cell-data mode. $10/24-hour period on the first phone and an additional $5 on a second phone on the same billing account. We always activate on only one phone and then tether the other phone to the first one, so we only pay the $10. Once this service has been added to your account, you don’t have to turn it off between trips. The system manages things well. We‘ve used it on both land and sea in Europe, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Canada without any billing or service problems.

T-Mobile post-paid plans give you 5GB of free high speed data in the Bahamas, and then free 256KB data speeds unlimited after the 5GB. SMS texting is free, phone calls are 25 cents per minute.
