Can you wear a baseball cap to a restaurant?

My husband and I went to Bravo Italian restaurant this evening for dinner. It is located at a popular shopping mall near our home. Halfway through our meal, an older man in his 70's walked past the aisle and told my husband to take his hat off. He kept on walking...out the door. We were so shocked. My husband was so upset by his comment that he didn't even finish his meal! It was a navy blue cap that said ADIDAS on it.
What is your thought on wearing baseball caps to a restaurant?????????

I agree with the man. Hats at the dinner table are rude. Whether you are home or out it is rude. Men are supposed to remove their hats when inside or at the table. I was brought up that way so I can see where the man was coming from. I would not have said anything to your dh though. What you do is none of my business.

My Dh takes his off in a restaurant. Just like he wouldn't wear one at our own dinner table. Think this one goes under manners.

Doesn't wear one inside either...our home or anyone elses.

It's considered rude to wear a hat at the table and especially at a restaurant.

I think everyone needs to MYOB. Who cares what your husband is wearing? How does it possibly affect anyone else and their own personal enjoyment of the restaiurant or any other facet of their lives?

TEll hubby next time to wear a big ol' ten gallon hat and enjoy his meal.

Yep, hats off at the table. In fact, as somone else said, hats off when you enter a building. These days manners and etiquette are a thing of the past.

I think the biggest shock to us is that someone was so upset about my hubby's hat that he had to SAY something out loud and ruin our peaceful night out without kids. Now it is 8:00 at night, and we are sitting at home because hubby is in a bad mood......all because of one person's comment. Why in the world would this bother anyone????

Like the others have posted, hats off inside and especially at the dinner table. I could have seen my dad walking past someone and making the same comment the older gentleman did to your hubby. Unfortunately, Barb is right etiquette and manners are a thing of the past.

FWIW, just asked DH his take on hats in a restaurant and he responded "HAte 'em." But then again he hates hats.

I'm not crazy about hats in restaurants, but that man's attitude was WAY more rude than wearing a hat inside! My sympathy to your husband.

I agree, I personally think it is bad manners to wear hats indoors, but that man was just plain rude.

It must have upset the man to to have said something....:confused3 We would not have but we wouldn't be sitting at home all upset about it either. Is your DH upset with the man or himself. It isn't that big of a deal.

My boys wear baseball caps all the time (they are 13 and 9). We have taught them to remove their caps at the dinner table, whether it be at home or in a restaurant. It's just good manners! (they remind each other if they forget too!)

It doesn't bother me in a bar, but it would in a restaurant. I'd never say anything to a perfect stranger though. Some people are just way too free with their comments about things that are none of their business.

Fast food or a sports bar it is fine. In a real restaurant I consider it beyond rude to wear. Just the way I was raised, sorry.

We have that rule as well. My DS likes to wear a bunch of skater type hats.. he has to take them off anytime he enters a restaurant, place of worship, or things like that.

It doesn't matter what restaurant-- sports bar, fast food, or even nicer table service-- it comes off.

It's rude. Unless it's McDonalds it needs to come off. I wouldn't say anything either, but depending on the level of dress at the restaurant I might talk about it at my table.

Consider the possibility that the exiting patron was so upset by someone wearing a hat inside a restaurant that he couldn't even finish his meal - and left.

At my daughters house the quickest way to get mama to go upside the DGS's heads is for them to forget to remove their hat!!! Refuses to have mannerless children.
