Can you decorate a plate that is safe to eat from?

My daughter wants and arts & crafts birthday party, so I am sure I will have lots of questions on here! :)

The first thing we were talking about was what kind of plates to buy. Then we thought about having each child decorate a plate and use it for dinner. Any ideas on how to do this besides the kits you have to send away?

I read somewhere you can get a clear plate and paint the back but there weren't many directions. Any ideas on what kind of paint to use or what I can cover it with to seal it once they are dry? It's a sleep over so we'll have plenty of time to let the plates dry.

Thank you!!

The only ones I know of that are safe to eat from are the ones you have to send away to get the plates made.

They do have mugs and cups that have inserts that you can decorate/make and then the cup slips in so they are safe to use immeadiately if you wanted something to eat/drink from.

I'd say your best bet would be on the back side of the clear glass plates. You just need to make sure you use glass paint (they sell it at Michaels in a variety of colors) and then the instructions tell you to bake it in the oven for a certain amount of time to make sure it sets (that way it can be washed in the future without the image being lost). I've used the glass paint before to paint wine glasses and it worked great. Hope that helps.

clear smooth glass.

We buy paint for glass and have the kids paint the back of the plate.I print coloring book designs then tape them to the front of the plates. The kids paint the backs.
