budget minded 70th birthday party ideas

my mom is turning 70 in nov. I was thinking about throwing her a party along with my brothers.
Do you have any ideas what I should do? I am clueless . She has a large family how ever her siblings are 7-14 years older than her. I have no clue what to do . I do defintly want to do something.

Maybe a tea party with some of her lady friends? Serve 7 teas Scones, biscuits etc. and a fancy afternoon.

You could do 7teas more casually if you did Russian tea, iced tea, etc.

It was a lot of work but when my Mom turned 70 we had 70 of her friends write a short note about her and attach it to a plastic flower. We gathered all of these into two huge vases. Very special.

I know of people who gave their Mom 75 single stem flowers and she got to give them away to people she appreciated on her birthday.

It isn't a party idea, but as a gift we converted all of her old, 3 minute long movie reels to an indexed video. Now she can enjoy the old movies at her convenience. If your Mom is more hi tech, you might want to consider converting to a DVD instead.

For my mom's 70th(that was 7 yrs. ago) we gave her a party with all the relatives and friends. We also tracked down old, old friends and neighbors to invite them also. I think many older people have fond memories of when they were younger. Anyway, my one sister and I put together a scrap book and all 6 kids made a page and we sent a page to each of the guests with the request to make a page up and then presented it to mom at the party. Anything we got was great. Some were simply recalling good times in a letter...to some really elaborate scrapbooking pages. Many had pictures, momentos etc. and I keep It was really neat. Anyway we had about 100 people for a big catered cookout. A lot of fun with old, current and new friends and family! Have fun planning it!

For my grandmother's birthday, 70th I think, my mom and two of her siblings threw a surprise birthday party. It was held at our church, so no cost there. We bought food at Sam's Club so it was overly expensive and my aunt had a large cake made. For the "guest book", mom bought a scrapbook for everyone to write a short note to grandma. Then we added pictures to the rest of the book. It was a lot of fun and grandma had a great time seeing old friends and relatives.

Two years ago my sister and I threw a party for my mother's 90th birthday. We had it as a luncheon in a hotel as there were about 130 guests. It included relatives, friends, co-workers. Mom was the only person there who actually knew everyone. We had to involve her in the planning so we could know who to invite (other than relatives and known close friends).

Some of the people brought old photos or newspaper clippings. We did have a surprise for all the guests though. For about six months prior to the party my brother-in-law would go to mom's apartment once a week and have her talk about one aspect of her life each time, and he recorded the interviews. He would thne transcribe the interview into text and go over it with her at the start of the next visit. At the party we gave all the guests a copy of the book which was made of her history.

That reminds me, I have to send some cards, she will be 92 next Sunday.

Remember to have it in the daytime if late 70's and 80's are going to be driving! Many older folks don't drive at night because of vision problems.

A cute idea I heard was to give little brown paper bags with penny candies that were popular when they were kids as favors.

My Mom was an unusual 70 yr old so for her Birthday my sister had her "lady" friends over and had an Elvis impersonator stop by and sing and dance - they loved it.

A local custom here is to give a "Card" shower. Ask folks from church or other organizations to send her a card, its pretty special.
