My friends and I are trying to figure out the best food/snack options for shelf-stable food (not needing to be refrigerated) that can be packed in our suitcases being checked on the plane and kept at the hotel for meals and snacks?

All we have so far is pop tarts! Any other great suggestions?

Poptarts, granola/protein/cereal bars, nuts, dried fruit, cookies, candy, chips that come in a tube (like pringles or whathaveyou), bagel chips

In the UK we have "Pot Noodle" - dried noodles etc in a plastic cup that are rehydrated with boiling water - very student type food, but might be useful to you (I'm sure there must be something similar in the USA).
Cup soups?

Just to throw it out there, you can do a food order and have it delivered to your hotel for your arrival day. We use Garden Grocers, and it is great to not have to pack food in our cases. We always get a case of Water, this way we always start our day in the parks already with a bottle, and save money. I also like to get out shampoo and body wash so it does not have a chance of exploding in my luggage. Of course, we also go for two weeks, so use a significant amount for our family.

Other items you might like are dried fruit, Jerky, crackers, fruit (oranges, bananas, apples - only if you do a food order!) and cereal. You can always pick up some milk at the food court/gift shop.

DisneeDad Says........................................... Has it really been 5 years since we have been there? Yes.

I have to answer, because a 5 year old boy 15 years ago said, while we were at the Sci Fi Diner.... "We have two choices, pop tarts or cereal!"

Depends on where you are staying. We are staying off site this time, and Winn Dixie is less than a mile away.

Love the beef jerky idea! We're staying at Pop Century and I've heard that we can use the microwaves in the food court, but sometimes you just want to have food to snack on without having to leave the room!

I have to look into the Garden Grocer... is it expensive to have things delivered? We were hoping to do that with the bottled water but when we checked Costco it seemed kind of pricey!

Peanut butter.(Jif makes little "Jif to Go" peanut butter tubs that you can dip apple slices or celery sticks into. I always bring some Jif to Go from home, then buy the produce at the food court at the resort, or at one of the parks (I toss the peanut butter in my backpack). Great healthy snack.

Crackers.
Trail mix (I mix nuts, raisins, M&Ms, and pretzel Goldfish crackers at home).
Applesauce (individual tubs).
Cans of juice
Ritz Bitz sandwich crackers with either peanut butter or cheese filling.
Cookies (love Pepperidge Farm).
Granola or protein bars.
Dried fruit (raisins to very well with celery and peanut butter!)
Teddy grahams

Besides the weight limit, does anyone know if there are any restrictions on what you can pack in your checked bag? (As far as food/drink items?)

I called airtran to ask about that. They said that you can bring an entire carry-on bag filled with dry groceries. We plan on filling an entire rolling suitcase for the way there and then reusing that suitcase for our souvenirs on the way home.

I don't remember there being an extra charge for our grocery delivery, but we had a large load, including diapers and baby stuff for 2 weeks. I have also heard that their first delivery is free. I would recommend you check out their website to see if it is worth it for you.

That's a GREAT idea! With four of us and four carry ons we should have no problem fitting the food we want to pack!

If you do carryon remember stud like peanut butter, apple sauce packs etc have to go in your quart size bag and be separated during Tsa inspection. If you check peanut butter I would expect to have your bag searched. Peanut butter in a jar can look like an explosive.

I bring some goldfish crackers, granola bars and lollipops when we fly but that's more for the plane than anything else. We garden grocer water and other snack foods

cereal, protein bars, crackers, pretzels, shelf stable cheeses, shelf stable pepperoni, m&m's, granola bars, bagels, donuts, microwavable mac and cheese:)

I always try to pack items to compliment the QS DDP diet which often lacks in fiber and nutrients.

- a sack of Clementines: to be eaten at breakfast and late at night if a snack is desired

- homemade bread: freshly ground whole-wheat bread that is naturally high in fiber...for the bread man in our family who loves to munch on bread at night to help with sugar levels

- a few bananas: for snacks early in the trip...a good source of fiber and potassium for leg muscles

- homemade granola: full of nuts and seeds...for breakfast

We usually have a Garden Grocer delivery or have someone who is driving bring a cooler of healthy food with them for those of us who fly. Items normally included are : apples, bananas (difficult to get the preferred ripeness though when ordering), hummus, peanut butter, and some refrigerated items like yoghurt.

The POP food court does have a wonderful selection of piece and cut fruit containers. If I didn't prefer to spend my snack credits on cupcakes and didn't have food allergies, I would have purchased some of their fruit options. I didn't notice as many fruit and veggie options at the more expensive resorts though.

I pack ind. pkgs. of cookies or cheese n crackers in an oblong plastic container (Glad) and put in center of suitcase surround with rolled up clothing arrives safely. We also take those plastic cups of cereal and just get get milk.

Mini tuna cans - you don't need a can opener - (I snag packets of mayo at sandwich shops when I'm there.)
Peanut butter
Crackers
Instant oatmeal packets (I make with the coffee maker)
Mini bagels
Wild garden individual packs of hummus
Fruit cups

All the resorts sell snack etc. You can also take the resort busses to DTD and they have places there to buy snacks. If you have a car, there are convenient stores, gas stations and grocery stores relatively close to buy snacks etc... With the price of lugguage on planes these days I would wait to get here before purchasing.
