DD is only swimming 2 days a week. I've noticed the texture of her hair has changed. It's almost gummy. Anyway, her hairdresser suggested a clarifying shampoo that is sold at her salon. I'd rather not spend that on shampoo and conditioner for a 6 year old.

Anyone have any suggestiosn? TIA

Then check them at Sally's or the drugstore but get her one and fast. Hair damaged by pool water is horrible. I can tell if someone starts swimming in one month's time (from one haircut to the next)--it is that bad.

I've tried lots of clarifying shampoos and some of them are REALLY harsh.

I've been using ISO Purifying Cleanse Shampoo for years. It is a salon brand but a big liter bottle runs about $20 if that. It is not one of the pricier ones. It removes the chlorine and is gentle enough to use everyday. This was recommended to me by my cousin, who is a hairdresser and who is a bleached blonde, pool going woman as is her kids. I've stuck with this stuff for years and they better not discontinue it!!!

I have found it in some of those mall stores that sell all salon products (Trade Secret is one that is in our area. Ulta may carry it also).

I don't use a lot of products on my hair. Usually just shampoo. But in the summer I swim a lot, get sunscreen in it, sweat, you name it. When my hair starts to look a little dull either summer or winter, I wash, condition as usual then pour about 3 cups of vinegar on it and rinse. The vinegar makes my hair feel so clean and soft. If you rinse it really good there is no smell. And it is very cheap.

If you go to a drug store/pharmacy, you should be able to find a clarifying shampoo for less.

For some people--Chlorine is just way too harsh and a special shampoo can help the hair deal with it.

I am not familiar with brands to be able to recommend one. I would only use those special shampoos after a swim and then stick with regular shampoo for the rest of the time.

My 2 ds are lifeguards and they use the loreal kids sport one. It smells like orange. But their hair is short, if your dd has long hair, you might want to try something else. Its cheap and does the trick for them.

My dd swims year round on 2 swim teams (high school and club team) so needless to say she is in the water every day!! We use Scruples hair clearifier, it is really good and worth the money.

Is it the Malibu brand? If so, it's worth it. You could even use it. It's an excellent, excellent product. Nothing compares to it.

There is another product similar to Malibu sold at Sally's. It's not as good. Malibu is superb - however, it does do the job:

Poke around on there. Ion has a whole line (it's trying to complete with Malibu) including conditioners, crystal treatments, and everything.

I use this every so often because I use lots of styling products in my hair:

We use the Loreal kids one that smells like Tang. It works fairly well, and it's much cheaper than salon shampoos.

When she said clarifying shampoo, that's what popped into my head. I used that back in the day.......:lmao:

I have long hair and used loreal sports or whatever it is called and it worked wonders!

My kids use this too. They are in the pool everyday in the summer.

my daughter has long hair and swims and dives year round. And basically lives in the pool during the summer months. So far the best shampoo we have found is ION you can buy it Sally's. They usually have some great deals, buy 2 get 1 free etc....

also I have found if her hair is in really bad shape we will do a baking soda wash followed by a heavy conditioner.

DSs swim on our neighborhood swim team every summer. They use the L'Oreal shampoo pictured above.:thumbsup2

The very best IMO is Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3. I've been able to watch for sales and get a decent price on it, and when I do I stock up. I never actually buy it from a salon, though; big markup on that.

The Loreal Kids always worked well for DS, but he has thick, coarse hair that isn't very long. DD has my hair, which means it's gossamer-fine and there isn't much of it. She'll be 3 this summer and this will be the first time that it has been long enough to see damage on, so we'll see how well the Loreal works for her. If it doesn't, I'll have to share my stash of Paul Mitchell.

Ultra Swim Shampoo & Ultra Swim Conditioner... don't know how to post a picture...but if you Google it, you should find it.

When we built our home pool many years ago, my stylist gave me advice on how to reduce the damage to hair from the pool's chlorinated water. She told us to get our hair thoroughly wet (in a shower or with a garden hose) BEFORE we got into the pool. That way the hair absorbed the regular tap water before being exposed to the heavily chlorinated pool water.

This also helps to protect color-treated hair.
