Planning a trip for me and my parents during free dining and was wondering which restaurants have the best selection/ food choices for diabetics. My mom takes byetta before each meal.
Thanks!!! :goodvibes

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Go to Post #3 and look at both Diabetes and Dietary Restrictions.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

From Experience i'd say all of them:)

you need (or Your Mom) to know your limits on what you can or can not eat- I am allowed so many carbs per day and while Disney can't give you a carb count on foods most things you can estimate- Like fries in the non Disney world has this many carbs so those at Disney have about the same-
I can eat ANYWHERE at WDW as long as I watch what I eat and know what I can or can't eat.Not only am I diabetic but I am allergic to wheat and gluten - eating at Disney is a joy!!

Also when you call about your ADR's tell them that there is a diabetic -

2 of my fav places are
Epcot Toyko Dining I can get chicken breast and steamed veggies-no added sauces- They give me rice but I only eat a bit of it-

MK Crystal Palace has awesome salads & chicken and will make you a sugar free dessert-

I carb count and take into consideration the heat and walking
Some days I am good and others I need to down a powerade:)to raise my numbers.

I would also email the special diets team and get info from them on Sugar free foods available-
watch too many SF foods ESP. while in the heat- It can cause upset tummies:(

HAve a good time!

You can tell the restaurant you have a diabetic and the chef will talk with you but I find that to be of very limited assistance. Although they will prepare food differently if you request it - no sauces, etc to limit carbs. I avoid the desserts or just have a few bites of the regular desserts. Most of the sugar free ones seem to have as much carbs as regular and they tend to have sweeteners that can cause digestive problems!

I find all the restaurants to be fine for diabetics. I also carb count and just estimate the amount per meal. Your mom should plan to test her BS more often than normal - I tend to run low at WDW because of all the walking so that allows me to work in treats such as Mickey bars.

The problem I have with my Byetta in Disney is the amount of time you will wait for your ADR is unknown. The optimum amount of time between injection and eating is 30 to 45 minutes my endo tells me. If I inject 30 minutes prior to ADR time and they are running slow, then I miss the optimum eating time. What I do is just wait to inject until they call our name. Means I don't get the full benefit of the Byetta but it is better than going too long after the injection. For counter service it is a little easier to plan.

We were there 4-11 June with two diabetics. DW is Type 2 on Byetta and DD is Type 1 with a pump. They ordered sensibly from the menus and sometimes shared a CS meal, since we were on DDP. We had one no-sugar-added strawberry cheesecake for dessert at Coral Reef and decided it was better to taste the regular desserts than get the no-sugar-added ones. Since I'm a gastric bypass patient, at CRT the CM offered me fresh fruit and it was a compote of fresh strawberries and blueberries, with no juice. It was delicious.

I had my pedometer that I have verified its readout with the treadmill I use for my daily exercise and we averaged 10 miles/day. We would do the park with early EMH until after lunch, back to room for a rest, then do TS dinner and the park with late EMH. One day we even did all four parks and nearly wore out DW. DD noticed her readings were lower some days, but did have some high morning readings because of late evening snacks.

Because the timing on the shot is critical with eating I think the buffet restaurants are best. Why, you ask? Well once you are seated you can go and pick out your food which serves two purposes: you take what you know is correct for your circumstances and you know the time you need to start eating. You are more in control, here.

If you go the other way, you are dependent on the waiter bringing your food on time. There are fewer choices for eating when compared to buffet.

Now, I will say we've done both and a few times we have gone beyond the right time to eat when it wasn't buffet. Free dining can make everything more crowded and it makes everything take longer especially at popular places like LeCellier. You won't die from that experience, but if you want to do your best then buffets are the best solution.
