I know, for instance that the hair salon in the Y and B Club is the BEST place to get your hair braided! They are fabulous!
We are going on a 3 night Wonder.
Is the hair salon on board the best place to get your hair braided or should you wait until Nassau? And if wait until Nassau, where should we go?
I have had Caribbean locals do hair braiding before and it never looks that hot. I'd rather pay more and get it done right.

My dd had her hair braided on Castway Cay. The price was quite reasonable and the braids lasted several weeks after we got home.

do you need to make appts at castaway cay? Do they book up fast. Are you spending your whole day waiting and having the braids done?
Thanks

We arrived early on CC. DH and Ds found our spot while DD and I walked to the hair braiding area. We were the first ones there so no waiting. DD had the braids on the top only not all the way down . Her hair is quite long. She had about 10 braids. We paid $22.

I too would recommend having it done on Castaway Cay. When we cruised they did take reservations for CC in Mickey's Mates gift shop, but when we showed up for our time (morning), there were several hairbraiders with nobody at their station. There seemed to be quite a bit of availability.

My daughter had the half-braids and they were $2 a braid. I believe it was $40 plus tip for hers. She got to pick out two colors of beads. They lasted about three weeks after we got home too!

Ahh wow!...that's excellent, that's what i'm gonna have mine like.hehe. So you think it's best to have them done on CC then. If you have it done on the ship, do u have to book that up? :)

Thanks for all the quick replies!
Lovemybirmans..your daughter looks beautiful! Looks as if they do a really good job on CC. I think we'll get it done there.

here's some of the options - from a dad no less - who has sailed single parent and had DD's past shoulder done whole head multiple times now .... and some partials too

a) do it on the ship - but book immediately on boarding.
pro - no worry about how clean - and you can hang it on your ship account
con - price fix'; no deals here

b) cc - get there early
pro - ditto to the ship
con - ditto to the ship; and it can cut into your cc time! no ressies (unless they've changed

c) Nassau @ the big open air place just as you leave the ship
pro - ingore the posted prices; work your deal. I got dd whole head, hair past shoulders for $45 one time....lot's of 'vendors' so no waiting usually...in my experience this is the way to the best price... On a 'big job' you can actually hire multiple workers....
con - if you don't like to haggle...this ain't 4 u. some worry about how clean but in 3 experiences, no problems for us....need cash...not a lot of places for mom/dad to sit while waiting
hint - the closer the 'supervision' the better the job....and drop hints about the tip....

d) Nassau - walk down the street and find a beauty shop - really....I'm not kidding!
pro - negotiate a price, have a real chair and air conditioning. Much nicer conditions for both her & when I was waiting (for hours...long hair, whole head - about 3 hours - but a damn nice job too - they brought in a relief pitcher when first person's hands got tired)
con - $$ and you need to do a little looking; but I found a small shop on the second floor of a shopping area on 'the strip' - there was a sign.... cash operation

You can also get the braids done on the boat by the pool. Check the navigator for times. I would get them done early in the cruise, that way she can enjoy them while on board. Also if they are done before Nassau, there will be less hassle from the vendors there.

How much do they cost on the ship and where do you make the reservations??

I had my daughters hair done on the ship. Check the Navigator for booking times. I booked first thing in the morning so there was no wait and we still had the rest of the day. It took about 30-45 minutes for 1/2 head. The cost was $2 per braid. I paid $42 for my 2 girls! The braids lasted for another 3 weeks after we got home!

I thought I would pass this on. My DW had her hair braided on CC. It was almost as if they tride to hard to get as many braids as possible (they get paide by the braid). In doing so, her hair was so tight that by the time we went to bed that night it was giving her a spliting headacke and she took them all out. $40 down the drain.

I always take DD before we board. The salon at Coronado Springs did it without any pain in less than an hour inexpensively (whole head). I like not hassling with the detangling after the pool and beach excursions. It doesn't always look fresh by the end of the week but the convenience is worth it for us.

My 3 year old daughter (in the pink below) got her hair braided at CC. They did a great job and it lasted for a week after we got home. My daughter's friend (below in middle) had gotten her hair braided in St. Thomas and in three days it was out and she had them redone at CC too. This picture was taken right after they both had their hair braided. She loved her braids and continues to talk about getting her hair braided again on our next cruise in Feb.

jblb...thats what I'm talking about. I've had my dd's hair braided by some that just weren't that good. I'd rather pay more and have it done right and have them last longer.

Seedooken...Braides hurt! It hurts when they do them and it hurts for the first day until your scalp relaxes a bit. Ahh..the cost of beauty.

Capt_BJ...You are an awesome dad!! :thumbsup2

Ahh there braids look really good!...defentially gonna have mine done!

I no this is a bit random!.lol.. but is it easy to wash your hair with them in?

Any suggestions on how to prevent a sunburned scalp after getting the braids?

I would say do it on the ship. On the first day I made our appointment. After comparing braids with others on the ship I concluded that we got a deal (Most told me it cost them double and some triple to what we paid!) and I personally preferred the fewer braids. I think off the ship they try to do as many little braids as possible so they can make more money since they charge by the braid. I saw so many little girls with such tight small braids - I can't even begin to imagine how painful it was for them to get them and what a nightmare it was gonna be to take them out. Plus, I've heard horror stories about lice and stuff off the ship.

The first picture is another option that my younger DD had done. She is VERY tender headed. They charged I think $2 a braid. The woman did them so she could still pull her hair back in a ponytail and leave the braids hanging down. These lasted about a day or two after the cruise. My oldest daughter's braids lasted for about a month after! I think they could have even gone longer, but it was starting to freak me out.

Be prepared - alot of hair comes out when you take them down! I'm sure some is the dead hair that would have fallen out anyway, but it is still scary!
