I want to put curls in DD's pig tails. I've seen girls have curlers in their hair before dance shows, but don't know what to use or what technique to try. She has fine hair. I tried some of those foam clip rollers, but they were old and didn't work so well. Any advice would be appreciated!:goodvibes

I have no advice but would love to hear some!! I have been wanting to do it with my hair (I have naturally curly hair but straighten it, and would love to make waves or cute curls after straightening it)
I have very thick hair though

It would depend on the look you are going for.

Also many of the styles you see in dance and cheer are accomplished with a hairpiece.

Depending on the look...I have regular rollers, hot rollers wih clips, and different sized barrel curling irons.

The irons are used when my girls want a cork screw/ringlet look. Depending on our goal determines how much hair I roll at a time. And I also use styling product---amount is determined by look and activity level. Dance would require a curl to be virtually cemented.

Our biggest need is the time to do all this. I did ringlets for my oldest when she was 5 and a flower girl in a wedding. It took well over an hour. It is what she wanted, but she was bummed when she realized how long it would take.

I've seen girls with rollers in their pony tails. I guess this was the look I was going for...something cute and poofy that would handle humidity. Any techniques, styling products...etc. Smallest amount of time would be appreciated! I think it may only take 3-4 curlers per pig tail for her!

The biggest thing with a curling iron or flat iron is to curl from the roots DOWN. Do not start at the bottom of the hair and curl up. By starting at the top and curling down you get the nice curl all the way down.

Oh does this bring back memories! When I was in show choir many moons ago we all had to have curly hair for competitions. I also have very fine hair that doesn't want to hold curl(even permed). The only thing that would work for me and guarantee long lasting curl was the old fashioned small foam rollers put in after I washed my hair and then I would usually sleep with them in and take them out the next morning(or just prior to competition) after my hair had completely dried. Then of course copious amounts of hairspray(which I hated) would be used. But this would keep the curl intact usually until the next day. I tried several other techniques(hot rollers, curling irons etc.) and nothing else would even hold the curl until the competition was over. I would always come off the stage with flat, straight hair. I sometimes still wish I could sport curls occasionally but have learned to embrace my straight as a rod hairdo. On the positive side, no frizz or flat ironing!:thumbsup2

Use the Garnier Curl Cream, you comb it through while damp and then roll it on the old fashioned foam rollers. Let the hair just about dry, you can use a blow dryer to speed up if needed. Then spay the heck out of it with hair spray before you unroll there are sprays out there that are specific for curls. Just let the hair spray before you unwind. Then any pieces that need to be tweaked can be done so with the curling iron.

When my hair was a little longer I did that a lot of nights before going to bed.
It was a quick take-down and a pull up with a banana clip. If I rolled before bed the hair would be ready to go in the am.

When I was little in cheer we would have to do this hairstyle. My mom would accomplish it by washing my hair, putting the pony tails up a little higher then where they should go. Then take each piece of hair to be rolled, put gel in it (like the goop kind that was cheap and like bright blue), and then would roll them up and spray them. She would do this on both sides and I would keep the sponge rollers in until about 30 minutes before I needed to go stage just to give them a little time to fall. They certainly weren't soft to the touch but the stayed through the day. The same method worked on my little sister who has super thin hair.

I have a couple of items from Aveda that help.

One is a styling pomade called anti humectant or something. Since I am transitioning at the moment, I am unable to locate it.

The other is a smoothing product. That helps
with fly aways so the curl will look smooth.

Smaller rollers and small sections of hair will produce a tighter curl that will help hold the overall look for the day. It will be an insane amount of rollers...but the bigger the roller and the bigger the section, it will be a more loose curl or wave.

I have fine hair that will not hold a perm either. I have used the sponge rollers. Wait until your hair is a little damp, put in pigtails, use little sections of hair and spray like crazy when you take them out. I also have used the hot sticks (not sure if they make them anymore, mine are from the 90's) use the same procedure as above. I was on dance team and always had to have a curly ponytail. I used the pink sponge rollers until the hot sticks came out lol.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll go with the foam curlers and try putting them in pig tails when wet...blow drying too...we may not have time to let them air dry all the time. I'll look into the curl products you suggested as well.

Oh and I thought I stopped playing with "dolls" when I was 10! DD is way to cute and being her mom and dressing her up and doing her hair is way too much fun! And if she ends up being our only DD or our only, I wanna have fun with it!

:butterflyBest I have ever used is the Karmin:dancer:

Have you tried using your flat iron to curl it? That's what I do... I'll find a pic.
